Accused Bigamist Aaron Richardson Claims He Didn't Know He Had Two Wives

Aaron Richardson

First Posted: 08/18/11 02:37 PM ET Updated: 10/18/11 06:12 AM ET

Marriage -- whether it's a blissful match or an utter disaster -- is not something that people are likely to forget, but a Florida man accused of bigamy said he doesn't remember his first marriage.

Despite court documents that apparently showed Aaron Richardson, 66, of Vero Beach wed a second woman while still married to his first wife, he told police that he didn't have any memory of tying the knot in 2004 with Arkina Sneed, WPBF-TV reported.

Authorities didn't buy it and charged Richardson with bigamy on Tuesday, according to the Indian River County Sheriff's website.

Investigators uncovered Richardson's alleged double life while researching a domestic violence injunction he filed against Sneed, CBS 12 reported. That investigation revealed that Richardson had two marriage licenses and no divorces.

Richardson said he dated Sneed when he was released from prison, but denied that they got hitched.

He might want to forget his second marriage too. His new bride -- who he acknowledges is his spouse -- is Irene Clark. The couple married last year, but Clark filed for divorce in May, CBS 12 said.

I'm surprised that the wives remember marrying him! They had to be drunk. Wonder if the new wife actually needed to file for divorce, since their marriage wasn't really legal.

What about the married women and men who are cheating? They should be jailed far more than this guy. And less people will cheat. But If its consensual - who cares?

Come on!! Start with that law - it cause far more problems - affects the kids - divorce - $$ - morale - vandalism - suicides - killing the spouses or the other one - A million things happen when cheating is involved. Cheating is far worse.... and what about swingers or room mates?

- every one says marriage is like a business partner - and vice-versa.

You're allowed to have more than one business and more than one partner, but you can be jailed for a breach of contract if it applies. So then why are cheating spouses able to walk free - its a breach of contract right? - when a marriage licence is a legitimate proceeding.

-licence to licence.

Furthermore, If a suspended DL or suspended business licence is in the system, you can not renew it until you clear any problems - so why then, are they arresting anyone for the states neglect?

I mean - they knew he had 2 MLs afterwards to make the arrest, so why didn't they deny the second before they gave it to him? Its a matter of procedure and the difference of one divorce document....?

I know there is tax laws involved BUT... the state should be on top of who they are giving licenses to. That is

It's a little hard to enforce laws on cheating - since the prerequisite for that is secrecy. And frankly, people are allowed to be stupid. If the spouse is willing to put up with it, then the courts feel they have better things to do. But when it comes to bigamy it's a more serious issue, since marriage is a legal contract. Especially when it comes to finances. If a person is not divorced, the second wife has no claim on things like Social Security, insurance coverage, veterans benefits, etc. This puts him/her at a grave disadvantage should the spouse die and the first wife/husband claims these things.

So, it's more than just a tax issue. And I agree with your point about the whomever issued the license. A search of the database would have quickly revealed that there was a previous marriage and no divorce. Someone didn't do their job. But this has become endemic in our society. Some people seem to think they are doing you a favor if they perform a service they are being paid a good salary to do. You see it all the time in both the private and the public sector these days.
12:00 PM on 08/21/2011
Yes you are right, and I understood the legal part, but I was cheated on by my last relationship (she admitted to 6 guys!!!) So if they are caught I would like to see them spend some over night time elsewhere...

Thanks for the reply
08:51 AM on 08/21/2011
Surprising he has 2 wives... I did not read the story, but should you be jailed for having 2 wives...? The guy who got life - I don't know all the details on him either - but life in jail for having more than one wife seems a bit extreme... (I know I know he was doing other things to get life.... no replies on that statement please)

Now, What if you are in Vegas - get drunk - then got hitched - then go back home... or what about common law or fraud marriage licence - I went to get mine and it was just a piece of paper we had to both sign and seems easy to fake. With all the problems in the US right now they are really putting people in jail for this? Are we sure we are in the US or is this some Vanilla Sky plot?

Really, as a citizen, would you really care who this guy is married to or how many wives he has? Or would you rather see the expenses used on the crooked corporations? Or animal abuse or even better - littering in public places? Urinating in public places... I can think of a million other things to arrest someone for...

Actually, I do care - as a citizen. And so should you. If there is no divorce the second wife will not be eligible for any benefits the husband may have, because the first wife is still the legal spouse. Things like veteran's benefits, life insurance, medical insurance, Social Security and so forth are all contingent on the marriage being legal. If the spouse dies she may not even be able to inherit the house she helped pay for if it's in his name and the first wife claims it. I care, because it's nonsense like this that ties up the courts and can put a decent person who made the mistake of marrying a louse in poverty. In other words, we would all end up paying for this, instead of just one person paying for a divorce.
