Rick Santorum Has Some Interesting Theories About The 'Moral Failings' That Led To The Economic Collapse

I can't say that I find much mutual agreement with former Pennsylvania senator and presidential aspirant Rick Santorum, but for a brief, mad moment yesterday, I thought that we had finally found some cause in common. My momentary ecstacy occurred last night, when I happened upon this ThinkProgress headline: "Santorum: ‘Huge Moral Failings’ Are The ‘Root Cause’ Of Our Economic Problems."

Immediately, I thought, "Huzzah, Rick Santorum, you are absolutely right!" And you'll find a lot of others who agree. Take David Francis, of the Christian Science Monitor, who in May of 2010 opined:

At the heart of the financial crisis lay a moral failing. Too many financial-industry officials, and often their customers, lacked the ethical training and guts to refuse to sell or buy "liar's loans" and other toxic mortgages. Too many were willing to operate a massive casino that traded financial derivatives of little constructive value.

Francis went on to cite Elizabeth Warren's criticism, that this moral failing "led to 'ripping the heart' out of the economic security of millions of middle-class Americans." And you know, the entire concept of a "middle class" has yet to even come up in the GOP debates. So, yeah! Rick Santorum! Run with the ball, brother!

Oh, what's that now? You're telling me that this isn't what Santorum was talking about?

SANTORUM: Letting the family break down and in fact encouraging it and inciting more breakdown through this whole redefinition of marriage debate, and not supporting strong nuclear families and not supporting and standing up for the dignity of human life. Those lead to a society that’s broken.

If you think that we can be a society that kills our own, and that disregards the family and the important role it plays, and doesn’t teach moral values and the important role of faith in the public square, and then expect people to be good, decent and moral when they behave economically, if you look at the root cause of the economic problems that we’re dealing with on Wall Street and Main Street I might add, from 2008, they were huge moral failings. And you can’t say that we’re gonna take morality out of the public square, morality out of our schools, God out of our schools, and then expect people to behave decently in a country that requires, capitalism requires some strong modicum of moral consciousness if it’s gonna be successful.

So there you have it: "capitalism requires some strong modicum of moral consciousness if it’s gonna be successful," and if it hadn't been for gay marriage and abortion, that whole "predatory lending-to-toxic derviatives-to-betting against your own clients" scheme would have worked out just fine.

'...not supporting strong nuclear families...'

FYI Rick Santorum does not support nuclear families either.

He doesn't support nuclear at all. Only oil.

FYI I wouldn't buy a word this guy says, ever. Especially if you're a Christian.

This guy has been pushing for violent intervention into Iran, and has even hinted at reopening the books at conscription in certain circles regarding continued and prolonged conflict. This is the type of guy who would press the button, whistle, and blame someone else. His desire will ultimately lead us into violent aggression at his behest. Just listen to his rants regarding why Israel would be the 'perfect haven for Christian migration'. He wants to blow it up, or let someone do it and get paid to clean up the mess.

Take my words with less than a grain of salt. Hope that I'm wrong. I do.

I don't really think that gay marriage is really that big a deal. How about over-breeding by heterosexuals? specifically men and women who are making babies that they end up neglecting abusing and sometimes abandoning. A good deal of these children grow up without role-models and usually don't get a proper education.

Survival is the strongest instince of any species of animal and what do these unwanted children do when left up to their own devices? If they dropped out of school they probably can't even get a minimum wage job. This is not their fault. Most end up joining the military or joining a gang. If they choose the latter they will most probably get involved in a life of crime: drug dealing/using or prostitution.

The war on drugs and the war on crime generate huge amounts of money. judges and lawyers, law enforcement and prisons.

homosexual men and women do not make babies. what is wrong with the union between two men or two women who love each other and may want to adopt children. They are not a threat to anyone. I don't understand why over-achieving politicians and holyrollers are making such a big deal about it. They are playing on peoples fear by creating something that is just not there. These tea party people are running their campains for president on a non-issue. Am I wrong? I could be but don't think I am.

What's that? Rick Santorum blamed something on the gays?

I, for one, am shocked.

Ahh the face of the modern GOPer/TP partisan: just blame the gays/immigrants/poor people/whoever as long as my party and my wallet come first. Party before country, right guys?

I just cannot understand why Santorum and all the Republicans in Congress have not read the Gospels.

If they did,and contemplate on Jesus' teaching and follow His example,we would become a great nation.

Frothmeister says it all. He's entirely correct. My agenda was to cause financial collapse via undermining of the family. And here I thought that I was simply satisfied with ruining dozens of marriages daily!

So gays caused the financial meltdown.

Glad we settled THAT.

It always amazes me how people justify the death penalty but consider abortion murder. And personally I do believe abortion is murder, but still believe it's a womans choice to decided not our government. Murder is murder either way you spin it.
