House Republicans Get An Earful At Town Halls Back Home

Paul Ryan Town Hall

WASHINGTON -- On Thursday, more than 200 protesters impeded traffic in Washington state as they gathered near the offices of GOP Rep. Dave Reichert, chanting, "We need jobs. Jobs! Jobs! Jobs!" This is the third protest targeting Reichert since the vote on the debt ceiling, Patch reported.

He's not the only House Republican getting an earful from his constituents during the August congressional recess. In town halls from New Hampshire to Minnesota, GOP members have been bombarded with complaints.

In New Mexico last week, a woman angry about Congress’ partisan squabbling over the debt ceiling cursed at Rep. Steve Pearce. In Alabama, several constituents blasted oil subsidies at an event hosted by Rep. Mo Brooks. More than 150 showed up in Pennsylvania to express their frustration to Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick about everything from student loans to Social Security.

Taxes have been a major theme at several town halls. In Illinois, when Rep. Randy Hultgren proposed making the U.S. tax code “flatter, fairer,” his constituents responded by demanding that he support more taxes on the rich.

In New Hampshire, Rep. Frank Guinta -- who serves on the committee on oversight and government reform and the committee on the budget -- faced criticism from hurting voters. "I need desperate help," said John Cochrane, an attendee at Guinta's town hall who has been out of work for more than three years, according to Seacoastonline. "I want to be a good American again. I don't want to be a second-class American."

At an Ohio event for Rep. Steve Chabot, protesters held signs that read "Chabot Shame" and "Hands off my Medicare." Chabot promised the roomful of senior citizens that Medicare changes would affect only those 55 and younger. But one attendee, Teresa Law, told the Cincinnati Enquirer that she was unhappy with his answers. “I want to understand what in the world is going on here. We’re just hearing more rhetoric and we’re sidestepping the issues. It’s maddening,” she said.

Some Republicans sought to lower the temperature by holding virtual town halls or only appearing at forums where attendees had to pay to attend. Rep. Chip Cravaack (Minn.) spoke at an event this week for which a business trade group set an admission price of $10. Rep. Paul Ryan (Wis.) went to an event hosted by a local Rotary Club that cost attendees $15. Reps. Lou Barletta (Penn.) appeared at a $30-per-plate "CEO-to-CEO" event last week, and Rep. Renee Ellmers (N.C.) appeared at an event that cost $13. The event Rep. Ben Quayle (Ariz.) showed up to cost $35 a head for a Q&A session and catered lunch.

This tactic may have helped some Republicans avoid protesters, but others weren't so lucky.

House Speaker John Boehner and Minnesota Rep. Erik Paulsen held a $10,000-a-person golf outing. (Lunch but no golf with both congressmen and Rep. Cravaack cost $1,000 a head.) Nearly 200 protesters showed up outside with signs accusing Republicans of protecting corporations over people, and a plane flew overhead with a banner that read, "Where's our piece of the pie? Jobs now."

WATCH the local Fox affiliate’s report on the protest:

Correction: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that Republican congressmen charged their constituents admission fees for town hall events. Many Republican congressmen spoke at events held by outside institutions where there was an admissions fee.

This article also incorrectly stated that Rep. Chip Cravaack (R-Minn.) appeared at a $10,000-a-person golf outing with House Speaker John Boehner and fellow Minnesota Rep. Erik Paulsen. Cravaack does not play golf, according to his office, but he did show up to the luncheon after the game.

Why? Because we care about the poor, the elderly, the women and children? Because we support the Middle Class Worker? Because we want to protect Social Security and Medicare which are NOT by the way entitlement programs! People PAY to be in those programs! Because we believe it is the right thing to treat ALL people equal? That means people of ALL religions, all ethnicities, all genders, all sexual preferences based on the Constitution you keep wanting to CHANGE? Because we want the rich who are getting tax breaks and millions in bonuses, while laying off American workers and taking their jobs to another country, to pay a fair share of taxes? Because we DON'T believe Corporations are PEOPLE? Because we don't support corporate welfare to companies earning the biggest profits in the history of this country? Because we believe our veterans need support even AFTER they have served? Because we believe everyone should be paid a fair wage? Because we believe a person's right to privacy includes their medical decisions? Because we believe this country is NOT a Christian based society? Because we believe everyone should be provided with medical coverage because it is the right and ethical thing to do? Because we don't believe money is more important than a person? Tell me specifically what Progressives do that you believe is wrong?

the point is they are public servants, in town hall meetings. That suggests free to all in the town to meet and get their concerns heard. I loved the "constituents" on the golf course. That was great

Why aren't these videos of protests against teabagger congressmen on the cable news 24X7 like they were when Democratic congressmen were getting protests during the health care debate. Instead what we see is more stuff about whether or not Sarah Palin is going to run or not. Who cares? She is old tired news. Can somebody in the news industry be fair and balanced for a change?

Geesh, will you guys never learn? Bankrupt the government? I guess you don't want your Social Security check eh? Or maybe no police,no one to run the prisons, no repairs on roads, no one to make sure planes aren't crashing in to one another? No federal funding for emergencies like the ones we will surely hear about for Hurrican Irene? No funding for flu epidemics or Medicare payments going to the doctors? No military pay? You guys just don't get it do you? It seems so simple to your simple minds, but it is way over your paygrade believe me.

That is the most propaganda filled site I've ever witnessed. Anyone who takes that crap and filth seriously has a real problem. If you want to be taken as an intelligent poster here, try posting a link to a site that is not the furthest to the RIGHT possible. WOW! Talk about losing it! The first three topics had so many lies and misstatements I stopped counting. All I can say is WOW!

Thanks for all the snide remarks... really shows your intelligence level...

You people need to wake up. the top 1-4% do not create jobs... In fact when they get higher taxes, they also get shelters...

These people very seldom make jobs either... in fact, a lot of them made their money by buying a company, slicing and dicing, then reselling at a profit, showing the new ownber how to profit with less employees.... tell me you have not seen it done, or heard about it.

I beg your pardon... Walmart does create a lot of minimum wage part-time jobs

You dish it out, but then must point it out when it comes back at you. If you wanted to talk to others, rather than at them, you may discover a difference in attitudes.

the t party is a rebranding of the Bush Chenny crew that got us here. Politicians who refuse to changed from politicos to representatives will find the hertitage foundations talking points drawing more and more anger as the mess continues. the only way out of this is a fair taxations system and support for internal professions and manufacturing which generate the kinds of income htat can support families and compunities. These frauds go to washington to play politics rather than create solutiuons. Are they comletely confused? A 2 year congressman offering a 20 year congressional amendment on balanced budgets as a solution?
That's the stuff of a full time politico with his hand out.

It's actually fun to watch....seeing these GOPers in trouble with their constituents for playing the game of politics, but not actually doing the job of politics (i.e. compromising for real solutions, instead of playing the hardline for political points).

The GOP is kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place. They are used to doing things for corporations. But times are so hard, that their constituents (i.e. the people) actually want the GOP to do more for them than just talk a good conservative game. It's interesting how fast the GOP went from sitting side-by-side with Democrats at the State of the Union speech, to holding the US economic markets hostage over the debt crisis. Better do something, GOP, or election day 2012 is gonna find you all "blue" (pun intended).

This is the moment, this is the time when Democrats can WIPE out the Tea Party.  We need to be loud, active and PUSH for jobs. The President needs to be stronger, and more steadfast in getting jobs off the ground--more than just payroll tax cuts --which is what the GOP wants--He needs to give it ALL he has and get this unemployment down.

WE need to stand behind him and not allow another debt ceiling debacle happen.

If we are ACTIVE, VOCAL and FLOOD the House republicans with protest, they WILL not get their way.

This is where we need to make a stand, and the Tea party WILL NOT have their way of just doing nothing but cut spending.
04:27 PM on 08/25/2011
tiss,if all the jobs bho gets of the ground are more government jobs.....who will be left to pay for them?? Doesn't it take taxes FIRST to pay for a government job??

You don't know much about history do you? It was the government jobs that brought us out of the depression. It put people back to work on jobs that needed to be done. They were able to pay their bills, we got roads and dams and big projects completed through the implementation of the CCC and the Tennessee Valley Authority. Hundreds of thousands of jobs were created that brought our economy back from the abyss. Once that happens, then the private sector takes over and things are back in place, but we NEED those government jobs you keep whining about. And YES, the government will spend more money until the private sector steps in to assume their position, more people working pay more taxes, more successful companies (with good tax restructuring) pay more taxes, more taxes less debt. That is a very simplistic overview but basically that is how it must come down if we are to get out of this Republican created mess.

Somebody needs to tell the Republicans , how the cow eat the cabbage. The outsourcing of jobs years ago and subsidies for the rich like Donald Trump get is what sank the economy. Their playing a game of chicken with the president while people suffer in this economy. GROW UP CONGRESS! TRICKS OR FOR KIDS!

Because the SCOTUS says money is speech; $15 dollars (GOP_town hall entry fee) only buys you one letter, one vowel (F?....U?)

But If you're going to a GOPTP town hall and you've got a long winded argument you're gonna have to borrow some money.........
