Lucha Vavoom In LA: Masked Wrestling At The Mayan Theatre

Loco LA: Lucha Vavoom Smacks Down At The Mayan Theatre (PHOTOS)

Last night, a bawdy cocktail of sequins, fringe, bare chests, hula hoops, striptease and masked man-on-man wrestling was mixed with plenty of tequila and poured into downtown's Mayan Theatre. A sold out crowd of 2,000 engaged in the spectacle that is Lucha Vavoom, a raucous and irreverent extravaganza of burlesque, comedy and classic Mexican luchadore wrestling. Lucha Vavoom celebrated its ninth anniversary with a show featuring hours worth of masked wrestling and plenty of scantily clad women.

The evening had the feel of an unhinged circus, as an increasingly rowdy crowd, (which included "Cheech and Chong" legend Cheech Marin), watched the rudos (the "bad guy" wrestlers) take on the tecnicos (the "good" guys) in bouts that were equal parts comedic jest and brilliantly choreographed feats of costumed athleticism. Lucha Vavoom travels Vegas in September and returns to the Mayan Theatre on Halloween.
