Warwick Davis In Frog Costume For 'Life's Too Short': Ricky Gervais Show Promo

First Posted: 08/19/11 11:09 AM ET Updated: 10/19/11 06:12 AM ET

If RIcky Gervais' new show, "Life's Too Short," is anything like this new promo clip, it'll have at least one dedicated fan: Gervais himself.

The British comedy mastermind released a new promo video for the upcoming BBC/HBO series, which stars Warwick Davis as the head of a dwarf talent agency who keeps all the best acting jobs for himself. Gervais has called it a mix between his two previous hit shows, "The Office" and "Extras." It's another mockumentary of sorts, and, as with "Extras," will call on a number of celebrity guest stars, such as Johnny Depp and Steve Carell.

The video below is another Gervais mashup: a combination of his love of ripping off the Muppets, and for his star, Davis. And clearly, it's a potent combo.

The show will air on BBC 2 this year, and on HBO in 2012.

This clip is yet another example of how Ricky Gervais has managed to refine cringe-inducing humor to a high art. As the clip begins with Ricky giggling in delight at having put Mr. Davis - a quite dignified film legend - in a most undignified, if not humiliating position, Ricky's seemingly oblivious obnoxious behavior had me teetering on the edge between laughter and disgust, with a healthy measure of guilt on my own part for continuing to watch. And Mr. Davis' inscrutable deadpan kept me wondering, "is he merely tolerating Gervais' boorish behavior, or is he actually playing along, only pretending to be somewhat mortified and perhaps a bit resentful over having been put into this position"? But then just as Ricky goads the poor fellow to try to leap up the steps, and I have tipped firmly into the disgust zone, the question "do you think you can stick to a wall?" and Warwick breaking his deadpan to literally fall down laughing sent me catapulting out of disgust and into laughter. Only then does it become clear that Ricky and Warwick are laughing at us, the audience, or our proxies, the film crew just off camera, who were no doubt up until the point when Mr. Davis finally lost it, standing there slack-jawed and completely mortified at the prospect that Warwick may have actually been seething with anger.

That is, perhaps, the longest, most convoluted comment about a silly skit I have ever read. He's a little green frog, for goodness' sake. It is funny. He's dressed as a little green frog! No frogs were injured in the filming of this bit. So that's good. I hope no one has needlessly alerted the RSPCA. And a very bright green frog, at that. "Ribbet."

What must it be like to spend just one day in RG's head?

Warwick Davis is BRILLIANT.

I **loved** Willow when I was a kid.

Clearly he's a good sport, because as clearly demonstrated here, Ricky can be as annoying as he is talented.

Well done Warwick.

Is that Willow? Wow he hasn't aged a bit.

So is dwarf the new politically correct term to use? I've noticed that the Huffington Post has been using it a lot lately. The dictionary's definition of dwarf is:

(in folklore or fantasy literature) a member of a mythical race of short, stocky humanlike creatures who are generally skilled in mining and metalworking.
• often offensive an abnormally small person.

The reason I ask is because I had a comment deleted the other day because I used the word midget to refer to a "dwarf"

I wasn't trying to offend anyone, I just didn't know that dwarf was the new word.

Well political genius, Dwarf has always been the term. Some dwarfs use the term 'little people' about themselves.

Dwarfism is the technical term, there are several different types.

Its not a new PC term.

Americans could never get away with this. Our society isn't as free. We're so obsessed with pretending that "offense" is more of an offense than dishonesty, that we're willing to be totally dishonest with ourselves rather than have a laugh. It's sad. The American sense of humor has become stale and angry and scripted.

Bordeline not being PC but I have to say I laughed, hard.

I hope Warwick and Stephen Merchant have some on screen together. Throw in a little Karl
Pilkington and I'm there.

They both shared screen time on Extras during the Daniel Radcliffe episode,
