Julia Stiles: 'Dexter' Murder Scenes Surprisingly Enjoyable

Following the high of John Lithgow's Emmy-winning run as the guest star on perhaps the most acclaimed season of "Dexter" to that point, the show's producers decided to make a change. Instead of having the next season-long guest be the adversary of the show's titular blood splatter analyst serial killer, the new star would be his ally.

The part of Lumen, a torture and rape victim rescued and protected by Dexter, went to Julia Stiles, who turned in a performance that would net her an Emmy nomination for guest star in a dramatic series. On a more serious note, it also netted her cases of depression and insomnia.

"I never think of myself as an actor who takes work home with them, but I was surprised, especially toward the end of the season -- around episode 10 -- when some of the details of what Lumen had experienced became really harrowing, and I started to realize that it was affecting me outside of work," Stiles told The Hollywood Reporter. "One scene in particular, in episode 10, when the detectives have found DVDs showing what has happened to the victims -- it was really dark. It made it more difficult for me to sleep."

That, in many ways, came from the amount of research she did on trauma and rape victims, and the subsequent internalizing she did to make it real for herself.

"I read about torture victims and people who were abducted and rape victims, but that all felt very intellectual to me. I needed something that would make me connect emotionally, so the most helpful thing was details, specific memories, or smells or sounds," she told NY Magazine last November, after filming the finale. "I would elaborate on those in my imagination, almost like meditating, I would sit and imagine those horrible experiences and eventually your muscles connect to your brain and it settles in. In a certain way, characters become people and you don't want to do a disservice to them. I wanted to be as dark as I could about what the reality of that experience would be. I felt like I had to do that to do justice to anybody who had an experience even close to that."

It may have been cathartic, then, to participate in her killing scenes, which she talked about with THR.

"I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the kill scenes and the sacredness of them," she said. "As a fan of the show, I felt very privileged to be a part of them."

is there another country on the PLANET that has a show glorifying serial killers? if somebody has an answer I'd like to know...

Killing scenes are cathartic? "Privileged" to be a part of them? Good grief. What kind of twisted world is this? And what of the camera men, the lighting guys, the producers, how do these scenes effect them? What are the unintended consequences of these awful and violent shows? Does anyone get debriefed? Is the mental health, the stability of those involved a consideration? I contend that Heath Ledger died because of his Joker role. It is not unusual to feel an extreme let down when something like that is ending, was he debriefed from that role? How do you come down from that kind of 'evil and empowered role' high? Did anyone consider the consequences of the role to his own psyche? 'Dexter; has impacted Stiles and the long term result of that impact remains to be seen. And she is the only one talking about it, many others with names that roll by us at the end of the show may similarly be effected. Hollywood has a responsibility here, assess their stability first to make sure they can handle such God awful roles and that they know the difference between reality and fantasy and do not merge the two, and debrief them people.

S5 was good, but last episode resolved WAY TOO QUICKLY - Lumen should have stayed around for at least 1 if not the first few episodes of S6 before deciding to leave Dexter... it didn't feel emotionally honest to me. No, they couldn't stay together, but it should have taken her longer to realize it.

I feel the same way, so I'm hoping that the writers did that on purpose to leave room to bring her back in a future season... (Maybe it's just wishful thinking)

What's even more sick are actors and actresses take on the parts of victims and victimizers. It's all in a day's work to them while the real victims suffer. Let's yell and scream about the death and destruction of 9/11 for the last 10 years but let's all sit in front of the t.v. and enjoy Dexter. I've never seen it nor will I even if I had Cable or wherever the hell it's shown. There are two kinds of vigilantes. Those who go out and look for trouble and call it being a vigilante, and those victims who take care of their victimizers.

I'm just sickened how death is romaticized on t.v. and cheered by viewers. It sickens me that people took video while Police were beating to death a mentally ill man for their YouTube 15 minutes of voyeuristic fame. It sickens me.

There's something seriously wrong with this woman where murder scenes are enjoyable, where she has to emulate a rape scene in order understand what it is to be a victim instead of having automatic empathy and something even more seriously wrong with people who cheer about a show of a serial killer whose romanticized as helper. My God! But when there's a real serial killer suddenly the admiration ceases because what they do is real. We've got one sick society.

With Michael and his wife getting a divorce (if they still are ) I wonder if she will still be on the show, never thought she was any good in her part, why was she there? She wa not necessary, and could they have made her anymore unattractive?? Yikes!

Season 5 already had one thing going against it.....following Season 4. Lithgow's performance was just jaw-dropping. A truly haunting performance.

With that, I totally enjoyed Season 5. Julia Stiles did a great job with Lumen. I shake my head sadly at all of the folks on here bad-mouthing her for her looks. When others are complaining about the "fake" looks of most Hollywood leading ladies, here we have an example of a completely natural and fresh woman. She is a beauty. And her progression as Lumen over the course of the season was believable to me.

Will she be back? I doubt it. She helped Dexter through his grief for Rita. Her job is done.

Also, the final scenes with Jonny Lee Miller were just chilling. Another great performance.

Can't wait to see Season 6 with Colin Hanks, Mos Def, and Edward James Olmos. What will happen with Dexter and Quinn? Quinn must defintely know that Dexter was somehow involved with Liddy's death. Can he just ignore that?

Many people doubt that the devil and his demons exist. Since they are invisible, humans are left with their telltale fingerprints or the unique characteristics of their influence. These usually are violence and immorality.

To hear comments like these, witness how people (who don’t want to be violated themselves) accept violence (through some type of viewing channel and chalk it up as a casual experience), and visit unspeakable violence upon each other, validate that these spirit creatures have the world under their influence. No wonder God said that the fight humans have is against wicked spirit forces.

Let me tell you, there is nothing more relaxing than sitting down with a freshly popped bowl of popcorn, to watch human depravity at it's best. This is what TV is all about!!

....this is a very, very sick show, very indicative of Hollywood and all its mentally twisted writers and participants. There is something horribly wrong when a serial killer is praised and glorified!!! Show belongs in a trash bin.
11:11 AM on 08/22/2011
But the thing is that Dexter isn't killing innocent people. Maybe it is sick that a serial killer is glorified, but secretly all of us would want to get rid someone who has harmed others. The difference is that we don't act on those impulses. Besides, it is only a TV show.

.......it is definately sick! . It also definately puts Christians down.....can you imagine them mocking the Muslim religion like this? They would never, ever think of having any sort of derogatory story lines that cut down Muhammed. I am not a stick in the mud, nor a Bible thumper...but this is wrong. This is NOT just a TV show...this is an agenda to stick up for all the wrong things, and put down the good.

He's a modern day vigilante, which maybe sometimes the world needs more of them. If you think that ridding the 'world' of rapists, murderers, pedophiles is a bad thing, reevaluate yourself. Anyway, you realize it's a book, right? So maybe you should be hating on the author.

I agree, give all the child molesters to Dexter after a little time with Dexter we will have NO more repeate offences from that one!

I think Dexter is doing Miami a Public Service, he should be on payroll, I wouldn't mind my taxes going up a little to pay his salary.
