Obama Weekly Address: President Pushes Congress To Take Action On Jobs

Barack Obama

ERICA WERNER   08/20/11 10:07 AM ET   AP

VINEYARD HAVEN, Mass. — President Barack Obama says members of Congress should put country before politics, set aside their differences and find ways to get people back to work.

The president is vacationing on Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, but he recorded his weekly Saturday radio and Internet address earlier in the week while in Alpha, Ill., during an economy-focused Midwestern bus tour.

He said lawmakers in Washington could learn something from the people in small towns in Illinois and Iowa. Obama said there are some things they could get done right away, such as passing a road construction bill or extending a reduction in the payroll tax that pays for Social Security.

"These are common-sense ideas – ideas that have been supported by both Democrats and Republicans," Obama said. "The only thing holding them back is politics. The only thing preventing us from passing these bills is the refusal by some in Congress to put country ahead of party. That's the problem right now. That's what's holding this country back. That's what we have to change."

Obama has promoted those ideas and others for weeks and didn't offer any new proposals or rhetoric Saturday. He's saving that for a jobs package he's to unroll in a post-Labor Day speech once he returns to Washington. Instead, Obama repeated familiar themes Saturday about working to recover from the recession.

"We're coming through a terrible recession; a lot of folks are still looking for work. A lot of people are getting by with smaller paychecks or less money in the cash register," Obama said. "So we need folks in Washington – the people whose job it is to deal with the country's problems, the people who you elected to serve – we need them to put aside their differences to get things done."

In the Republican address, Ohio Gov. John Kasich boasted of reducing Ohio's budget shortfall and cutting taxes in that state and said it should be a model for the federal government.

He said the federal government should get out of the way and let states succeed without raising taxes or imposing regulations, but he also called on Republicans to work with Democrats without compromising their principles.

"It's my hope President Obama will listen to the people and partner with Republicans to get our economy back to creating jobs and producing growth," Kasich said. "And it's just as important that Republicans not be stiff-necked about working across the aisle when important work must be done. It's OK to compromise on policy, as long as you don't compromise on your principles."

"The playbook we're following here in Ohio is simple: to grow more, you have to tax less, spend less and regulate less," Kasich said. "If we can do it here in Ohio, Washington can – and should – do it also."

Reading the comments on this post is enough to see that the main problem the Dems have for the moment is that a LOT of people don't have ANY idea about who did what, under Obama, to create jobs or to block job creation. Part of the post falsely claim that Obama only started to think about jobs AFTER having passed HCR, for instance. In real life, he passed historic economic bills almost a year before he  Read More...

Obama there is no time
I must pay my respect
And though I came to jeer at you
I leave now with regret
And as the gloom begins to fall
I see there is no, only all
And though you came with sword held high
You did not conquer, only die

And though I hoped for something to find
I could see your maze unwind

The president operates from hidden vacation spots sending out inane press releases to make us think he is still the leader. We may have to send the Marines in to flush him out into the public sunlight.

The dems send the same tax and spend jobs bill through again and again. That is what they call compromise.

Breaking News: I read it right here in the comments of the HuffPo! The big O is not in Martha's Vineyard on vacation at all. The pictures are fake. He's really on a Secret Mission for our country. He will single-handedly kill Momar Ghadaffi, become a great hero, brag abount it every day from now on, and run for re-election in 2012 as Grand Leader for Life.
(I really did read that last night. Still laughing. lol)

America needs action on jobs. We dont need hollow rhetoric.

Why did we not have a jobs program from the President months ago? Why does the President seem unable to do more than one thing at a time?

The Republicans are certain to kill any jobs bill. Republicans already said so even though they don't know the contents of the program.

Republican intransigence should free the President to propose a sweeping program and then let the Republicans go on record as anti-job, anti-economic recovery, and anti-American.

But no, Obama is a weak President incapable of defending our country against the radical illiterate right wing Tea Bag Cult.
05:28 AM on 08/26/2011
Republicans have said they will kill any tax and spend jobs bill, not any jobs bill. How about Obama stop the NLRB suit against Boeing, creating over 1.1 million jobs by that action? How about Obama stop putting the job of spending cuts to address the debt on to others, so he can finger point again, and propose a real debt plan, reestablishing our AAA rating. The corporate world is demanding it. They are afraid to expand because he will either sue them, or worse devalue their money and make expansion too expensive.

All of -o- sweeping reforms seem to evolve around more regulations to penalize small business
11:19 AM on 08/22/2011
Until the republicans agree to allow job creation and hire workers the administration will be held at attempt at climbing that wall of attrition created by the obstructionist who believe free market movtivates progress. The only solution is to give in to a decent of equal consideration and accept that winner and losers win the day. Government provides the winners their needs and any reasonable false understanding the working class had about their situation isn't considered.
05:31 AM on 08/26/2011
The jobs bill he has suggested is a tax and spend bill that is short term and meaningless. It will raise the debt, and lower our rating even further and not sustain. Real growth requires stopping the NLRB suit against Boeing, eliminating long term capital gains tax, I agree with penalizing CEO bonuses, unless all employees get an equal percent of salary bonus.
07:55 AM on 08/26/2011
I see your points. But What is the republican plan, They wont invest claiming that Obama is the reason. They say they will invest the saving from ending unions, lowering wages and using less people to do more, longer hours. They claim they will invest a tax break. but all I hear is that there is no reason to invest in America without lowering the debt. And they are holding trillions of our retirements and savings. The Attorney General is prosecuting as we speak. I think the economy is much bigger issue than stopping the suit against Boeing. Tax breaks is short term is meaning less also. When the market begins to fail. because of a lack of utilization.

Read some of my comments on my page and I will read yours' thanks for the comment..

I'm eager to hear what his plans are for reinvigorating our economy and stimulating job creation. I'm even MORE eager to hear what the republican's plans are, since they campaigned not too long ago on that very promise.

Apparently, they lied again. We have no reason to expect them to cooperate in any way, with their president after 30+ months of constant and blatant obstruction and subversion.

Agreed. It's sad, because America needs help and pitting one side against the other is the most UNhelpful thing to do. There is talk about "shared sacrifice", but the republicans are not interested in sacrificing anything. Evidently they don't understand what "sharing" means.

Axelrod said, “I think what you’ll find when the president unveils the entire program is that there’s nothing in there that reasonable people shouldn’t be able to agree on and if we make the House Republicans and particularly the tea party faction, if we make them the standard, we’re in deep trouble.” Nothing that people shouldn’t be able to agree on? Just guessing – but let’s see:
• Strengthen unions.
• Government infrastructure work for only union contractors.
• Tax increases. Oops --- I mean “revenues”
• Reform patent laws. This is a biggie!
• No roll-back of the massive number of new government regulations under Obama. More than 379 new government regulations were added to the mix in July ALONE.
• Continue the fight against Boeing for daring to locate a manufacturing facility in a non-forced union state to warn other businesses that they had better not try a similar stunt.
• Continue to sit on the new trade agreements with Columbia, Panama and South Korea so that congress cannot act on them. Unions don’t like these agreements.
• Extend unemployment benefits because they create so many jobs.
Oh yeah. There’s absolutely nothing there that reasonable people could disagree with, right? What we need to remember is that the people who put this dangerous hack into office were NOT reasonable people.

A vote for the above is a vote to ham string America. Small business owners are either riding the business to the end and closing the door and no one wants to start up a small business because of this mentality. People that think that the comment above is what they would vote for have no vision and common sense.

What any president can do is contingent upon his Congress. There are too many GOP obstructionists in power, for a Democratic president to do even half of what he could otherwise accomplish.

Contrary to Republican Dogma, The President of the United States is not an Emperor. Congress is actually the more powerful body of government. And as long as the primary goal of Republicans in office is to make Obama a one term president, NOTHING productive will get done.

That will help our citiznes and legal immigrants?

Who even LISTENS to these ad nauseum speeches anymore? Every time it's the same thing and he figures we're all anxiously awaiting the "big speech" after Labor Day. Pleeze.

Personally I'll find better things to do than listen to a carefully prepared speech that's sure in its attempt to woe his supporters and alienate the right. Every single move this prez does from now until election day will be to propogandize his positions so he will be re-elected.

He is campaigning now and will continue to. THAT is President Obama's priority. Re-election. YOU aren't his priority and the sooner you realize that, the quicker you'll realize he needs to leave the position asap if there's a chance on saving the United States of America.

I would prefer that he woe and alienate the right.

But speaking of woe and alienation, the American people should check out an organization called ALEC. Google it and be informed. The rich are well represented. The poor have only their vote.
