Dale Richardson, South Carolina Preacher, Accused Of Kidnapping, Rape Behind Church

Dale Richardson Rape

BRUCE SMITH   08/21/11 04:01 PM ET   AP

LADSON, S.C. — Dale Richardson was saved at a tent revival 32 years ago, was called to preach the Lord's word in 2006 and, for the past year, had served as pastor at Freedom Free Will Baptist Church, a modest red brick structure on a South Carolina side road running along a railroad track.

Now he's in jail, charged with kidnapping and raping three women at gunpoint – two of them in a trailer behind the church – and kidnapping a fourth who was not sexually assaulted.

According to an incident report, about noon on a Saturday last month, Richardson picked up a woman and gave her a ride. When the 20-year-old tried to get out of the car, Richardson allegedly pulled a gun, bound her hands, covered her head and took her to the gray-blue trailer home behind the church.

The report said he later dropped the woman in a wooded area, threatening to shoot her if she turned around. Police said the woman was able to identify Richardson from his picture on the church website, which also displays a short biography detailing how he became a Christian and then a pastor.

Richardson has since been charged with two other similar sexual assaults, both of which occurred last year. He is accused of bringing one of those women to the church trailer. The third woman claims she was raped in a wooded area outside nearby Summerville, a bedroom community about 20 miles northwest of Charleston. He is also charged with kidnapping a fourth woman.

Richardson said little last week when, dressed in a gray and white striped prison jump suit with his ankles and wrists shackled, he appeared before a Dorchester County magistrate on the latest charges. He said he understood the charges against him and was denied bond when the magistrate said he was a danger to society.

Richardson's public defender said it's too soon to comment on the case. During his initial bond hearing when he was first arrested, Richardson said he has a spotless record and will put up a strong defense.

Maj. John Garrison of the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office said serial rape cases are unusual in the area. He said this case is drawing particular interest because the suspect is a preacher.

Garrison, then at the Charleston County Sheriff's Department, helped investigate the so-called Lowcountry serial rapist that attracted national headlines two decades ago. Authorities believe Duncan Proctor, who was convicted of two rapes and burglaries and sentenced to life in prison, may have raped as many as 30 women between March 1990 and June 1992.

Most neighbors on the quiet cul-de-sac where Richardson lived in a neat yellow house refused to talk last week. But Mary Milligan, who lives two doors away, came to Richardson's defense.

"I don't believe any of this. I have never had a problem with him. He's kind. He's a member of this community. He mows the neighbors' lawns. I am just blown away by all these accusations," she said.

There was no one home at the Richardson residence, where a paving stone beside the walkway is inscribed "Believe in God. Believe also in me. John 14:1."

The church website says Richardson became pastor of the church on June 9, 2010. It says he graduated from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. – the college founded by evangelical preacher Jerry Falwell – and has a wife and two grown daughters.

But his name has now been removed from the sign outside the church that has a congregation of about 50 people. Those attending last Wednesday night's service who were willing to be interviewed did not condemn Richardson.

"He's always been a real sweet person. He's always taught God's word," said Virginia Davis, who has been attending the church about a year. "He's been honest with me since Day 1. I'd let him look me right in the face and tell me he did it, because I don't believe he did it."

The Rev. Dean Mandrell, who has been helping by preaching at one of the church's three weekly services, said the congregation has drawn closer.

"Nobody is leaving, they are staying right here. They are just worshipping God. They are not condemning. They are not tearing down or poor-mouthing or bad-mouthing him," he said.

Mandrell's Wednesday sermon was about judging others, based on Matthew's biblical account of the Sermon on the Mount in which Jesus says people with a log in their own eye should not be concerned about the speck in another's eye.

The South Carolina Free Will Baptist State Association has suspended Richardson's preaching credentials pending the outcome of the investigations because "the misconduct alleged against him is forbidden by God." The Rev. Todd Smith, executive director of the statewide association numbering almost 120 churches, said in a statement the association would cooperate with investigators.

"Our prayers are with all involved," he said.

Someone quoted Seneca the younger-- i have another one of his quotes: " He who spares the guilty, injures the innocent." and i could add: that: they "become guilty as well"

Do not spare the criminal -- turn them in, let them go to jail, a church should not hide a criminal, and a criminal should go to jail - they can repent-- but not oversee ANYONE in the congregation-- ever again. Then let go of the hate and let God deal with the rest.

I guess this adds a new meaning to "free will" for the good pastor.

I just love how this brings out the God bashers. To tell the truth I've always wondered how people can get so upset over something that they think doesn't exist. The way you lump all believers together is such hypocrisy. Teachers rape, all they all bad? Should we do away with schools? your tax dollars fund them. Postal employees murder. Thus the term "going postal". Are they all killers? Do you still use the postal system? You may say God doesn't exist. Are you saying there are no life forms in the universe greater than us? Our scientist once told us the earth was flat. Were they right? No one can tell you what happens after death. That IS the true fact. The rest is speculation on BOTH sides.

I can't find the spot, but suebeedue wrote "Actually-- the bible has been proven to be - not mythology but accurate history, fulfilled prophecy and when it "touches" on science-- it does not conflict with it. Obviously you have never studied the bible or looked into the clear- cut evidence of its truthful testimony. It IS a superior moral code to all other religious teachings. No other book has changed and touched as many people and endured so long as the bible."

Suebeedue, you can't quote your book of mythology to claim that it proves itself as superior to everyone else. Sorry, you can believe in your mythology of religious opinion if you choose, but that doesn't make it true or make your religious opinion superior to all others.

That's why they call it "blind faith"...because there is no proof of it.

You then said: "The bible does have its enemies!" So, anyone who doesn't worship at your altar of religious mythology is somehow an enemy? Wow. What a supremacist mindset. I suppose next you are going to claim that "God" is on your side?

You're entitled to your religious opinion based upon your mythology text, but that doesn't make it true...it just means that you choose to worship at that altar. For 3000 years, people worshipped at the altar of RA and any who didn't were castigated, too.

And the beat goes on. So it is with mythology.

OBVIOUSLY you have never studied the bible alan!

The points I made can be found in the huff post article that asked "should we take the bible literally". The scriptures I noted showed that the history recorded in the bible has been proven to be accurate. I gave scriptural references that spoke of times and dates the bible said something occurred or something existed. Compare those scriptures with records of recorded history and the truth of the bible clearly shows.

The writers of the bible were, for the most part, men of the earth-- shepherds, farmers, fishermen. Most did not have advanced education--yet they recorded the history accurately--- geography, recorded history and archaelogy support what was written.

The bible has endured many enemies and withstood the test of time. Men have tried to burn it, destroy it, discredit it, ridicule it, kill anyone who read it (such as Wycliffe and the Lollards) or printed it into a native tongue (or in the case of many of the comments here including yours) called it mythology.

ATTACK IN VAIN!!--The bible has outlived all of this and will outlive its modern day detractors as well---1 PETER 1:24,25--......The sayings of God endures forever.

They absolutely do hide behind their religion. I know first hand. Disgraceful..they are predators and use their faith and belief to sway the most vulnerable.

Whether you believe in God or not, there is no excuse for the things he has done. I am not a christian, I don't believe in the bible or god, but I know a creep when I see one! His crimes have NOTHING to do with the fact that he is a preacher or a christian. I am a retired Police Officer. There have been Officers who have been accused of rape, does that mean that all Police Officers are rapests? I am a woman and I never raped anyone! Fact is, whether christian or not crimes like these happen everyday and he needs to be in prison forever. Whether he was a preacher or not has nothing else to do with it.

Excellent comment! I dare to say castrate any man that rapes, and do what ever it takes to have a women that does fixed from ever having sex again. I have zero tolerance for a sex crime of any kind. The punishments need to fit the crimes, just jail does not seem to work!.

I think they did a study about castrateing men for sex crimes. The thing is, rape is not a crime for sexual pleasure its a crime of power and control, it is about violence. When they did castrate the few who chose to have it done, they commited the cimes anyway but with much more violence. When they were unable to obtain the final results they became more violent. Keep them IN PRISON FOREVER! Never let them out from the very first time and they won't offend again. And if they do it will be in prison and they won't like the results of that decision!

Don't you think that a preacher, like a teacher, doctor or yes, even a police officer, has a slightly higher level of responsibility to the public? This man influenced his congregation - he has a mandate to act properly, more so than Joe at the gas station or Johnny at the check-out counter.

Absolutly he does! I think what I was trying to say was, don't blame the whole of christianity just because of this one man. I think it is even more unforgiving when a person uses his or her higher office to commit crimes. What I was seeing was people bashing christians just because a preacher commited rape. I am not christian but I can't tollerate that kind of bashing. It is something that just kinda rubs me the wrong way!

Well yes, but Ultimately, according to Christians, it it the Christian God that allows or dis-allows all things that happen. He must have seen some merit or humor in it.

As more and more people are hearing about or reading headlines and stories such as these, more and more will question the possibility that people use religion as a mask to hide their other motives.

Let's not forget that even in politics and business, religions are used to hide other agendas to rape people financially &/or politically. Rape is just not limited to being sexual crimes, but also to pillaging and plundering people without their consent. Politicians, judges, Wall Street bankers and their crony corporations rape people and our environment everyday.
04:15 PM on 08/22/2011
I am so tired of people blaming everything on Christians. Do you not realize there are people in all walks of life who do these things. You don't hate business because a businessman commits a crime, or presidents because some presidents make wrong choices. Geez, People need to realize there is a big difference between religion and Christianity. Religion kills, it kills the soul because it puts the focus on meeting some organizations set of rules, etc. A person who loves God and believes that Jesus is his savior strives to be loving and good and helpful to his fellow man. He STRIVES to do those things because that's all humans can do is strive to be good because by nature we are not. I'm not defending this guy, I'm sure nobody is. But don't bash Christians because of it. Just because a person believes in God does not give other who don't the right to bad mouth them. Christ did not urge anyone to commit this crime, nor did God. Man makes his own choices and pays the consequences one way or the other.

Some of what you say is true. But some i disagree with.

First: It is true that many people are deviant from all walks of life, But a Christian is and should be held to the highest standard. Of course, unfortunately, there are so many people who call themselves Christian who are false-- which they show through there actions. And of course -- there are many enemies of Christians-, some because they do not want to live a Christ like life. Some hate Christians because so many religious groups are so politically involved. Jesus was not involved with politics of his day and neither were the first century Christians, Jesus taught that Gods kingdom is our only hope -- mankind's governments will Not be our salvation.

2nd.: IF you are a true Christian -- you are a footstep follower of Christ. He explained how we should adjust our lives to conform to Godly standards of right and wrong Jesus organized his followers to preach- and teach from the scriptures the way to live and what was expected of them. It was an Organized Religion. IF you read the bible you also see how after his death that Christianity was further organized-- congregations set up as a model for us to follow.

3rd. I agree that religion IS the cause of so many deaths and much of the misery in the world we see today-- but False religion - not true religion.

Christ taught nothing about religion, Christ taught about FAITH. There is a grave difference. Religion is the main cause of all suffering. One side killing or maiming the other to prove their belief is correct. I do not believe in any religion. I have read the Bible front to back many times, the only reference to religion in it pertains to pagan religion. Christ belief is FAITH.
02:08 PM on 08/23/2011
@Suebeedue - you say that Jesus was not involved in politics, yet he supposedly advocated massive changes in society. He was instrumental in the Cleansing of the Temple, thereby interfering with free trade and financial markets. Many more examples could be cited ...

If you consider rape to be about the sex act, you're wrong. It's about power over another person, so it shouldn't come as a shock when these stories break. This pastor sought a position of power in the community. Now everyone is shocked to find out he did this?

While I agree that some members of law enforcement need to understand there should be no place in the work environment for sexual discrimination against women, I'd prefer they spend more time being trained to look for this type of criminal behavior. There's a difference between having to put up with juvenile behavior from men you work with, and being emotionally and/or physically scarred for life at best, found dead at worst.

I'm not saying everyone in a position of authority is a criminal, but there are times when a serial criminal does not get closely looked at because of his or her standing in the community.
