Mitt Romney Looks To Expand $12 Million La Jolla, California Home

Mitt Romney La Jolla Home

First Posted: 08/21/11 02:50 PM ET Updated: 10/21/11 06:12 AM ET

Mitt Romney is looking to quadruple the size of his $12 million California home, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

The GOP presidential candidate has filed an application with the San Diego government to bulldoze the 3,009-square-foot beachfront house in La Jolla and replace it with a 11,062-square-foot property.

According to a campaign official, "They want to enlarge their two bedroom home because with five married sons and 16 grandchildren it is inadequate for their needs."

In addition to the California house and a townhouse outside of Boston, which is their official primary residence, the Romneys own a $10 million vacation home on the shore of Lake Winnipesaukee in Wolfeboro, N.H.

In 2009, they sold the 6,400-square-foot colonial in Belmont, Mass. where they raised their five sons for $3.5 million and their 9,500-square-foot Deer Valley, Utah ski lodge for close to $5.25 million.

Romney purchased the La Jolla property three years ago. “I wanted to be where I could hear the waves,” Romney told reporters at a book signing in California last year. “As a boy we spent summers on Lake Huron and I could hear the crashing waves at night. It was one of my favorite things in the world; being near the water and the waves was something I very badly wanted to experience again.”

The Romney campaign said that construction on the new home will not begin until after his campaign is over.

The above link is to an article in our very own HuffPo about Mitt Romney expanding his $12 million dollar home in California. Does any one of you believe this man, who has three multi-million dollar homes -- maybe 4, he sold 2 -- do you think he has any idea what we go through every day just to make it to our jobs and home and how much money we do not have to spend on "expanding" anything.

Better look at this one again. He has too much money to care about the average American.

Too selfish to pay their fair share, disgusting.

If I had a 12 million dollar house, I guess i would be just like Mitt. I could care less about anybody else in the country!

Just a thought before you go off on Romney, of the Top 10 richest US Senators, 7 of them are Democrats. Just saying, don't throw stones in glass houses. or at them for that matter.

PS: Obama took more money from BP than any Repub.

An inconvenient truth. The Dems (and their leftist emag HP) don't care about the facts, only that a repub has the money to pay for a mansion. They fail to remember Pelosi private jet.

At least Romney's new home is going to be made in the US.

BP offered it to Obama to make him look bad to Republicans -- they knew you'd drink the water. Barack Hussein Obama said, "I'll outsmart them and use it to beat the Republican candidate." HA!!!

Mitt Romney would be a sudden disaster for this country. The man has never known anything other that wealth. Wealth that cannot possibility identify with the working man. So what will happen to them ?Nothing because they will be forggoten and never be considered as any value.
He made a recent visit to southern Louisiana.Hosting a twenty five hundred per plate dinner at an exclusive club. He never even bothered to stop ate uilt this stoff and visit the working class that have built this state.IN OTHER WORDS.....DO NOT VOTE 4 HIM

duzacm, I'd rather have some who knows weath than a street community organizer from Chicago. Also, are you aware the Obama hosted a $35K per plate dinner recently? that dwarfs Romney's $25K don't you think? Obama visited a number of companies and they have since filed bankruptcy. Nice.

Yes,there is no doubt that Romney could bring us out of this economic crices But that dose beg the question ;Can this man use his extensive knowledge on economics ,and still understand the needs and complex lives that the middle class have to contened with ? That is worrisome .
One other thing that bothers me about Romney. And that is the religion he has been raised under . The Mormon religion ranks first as one of the worlds most horrofic cults.
Look up their history and docrines and be prepaired to under go a "Prophetic Shock."

Obama did not win the election based on his knowledge of the inner workings of government . He won the election because of his mesmerizing personallity and a tele-prompter. But let us also understand that Obama is ,nor ever was a litigement political leader with enough experience to run the government without an economic shut down.

This from a man who has promised to deny millions of Americans health care. Surprising since when he was governor he created a system that gets citizens health care and increases their life expectancy. But as President he wants no part of the work he did as governor.

If he's smart he'll turn the issue around and use it to his advantage by saying "I tried it on the state level and it didn't work, so there's no reason to expand it to the national level." Of course that won't happen cause I have yet to meet any politician Repub or Dem who will ever admit he/she made a mistake.

Ah,,,Mitt,,a car in every garage and a chicken in every pot...Lol,,,that is if all working class individuals had a million or two in the bank. That ,in effect, would mean that we can become a communist nation and "share" the wealth.
Sorry Mitt. No go back to the Garden of Eden that was in the state of Missouri and drown your troubles there. Maybe you'll meet your mentor there ,,,Joseph Smith..

The top 1% of America's earners on 42.7% of the wealth.

I don't think Mr. Romney is going to make things better.

Mitt Romney cannot identify with the working class Americians. The man has never known anything but wealth. So what use would he be in putting America back to work.
He denied that he has ever proposed any hospitalization programs that ran on different tracks than the Obama plan. He lied. His proposal is exactly the same as the Obama plan.
His cultic religion demands his constant attention .To wear "protective underwear", God having sex with Mary who had Jesus and his brother.Lu

A 12 million dollar mansion isn't big enough. So, how can I expect him to do anything for the middle class?

What's your point? If I had access to millions of dollars and negotiated with contractors that I'd have empathy for people making between $30,000.00 and $70,000.00.

The middle class doesn't have access to those resources to spend tens of millions on a house. People who do have access to that kind of money have nothing in common with those who are part of the middle class. They are part of the problem with the top 1% have 42.7% of the wealth.

Expand a away Mitt it's your money! Not that he needed to even give a reason but with a large family like that I don't blame for expanding-and he provides a few jobs in the process.

The most amazing thing about this story is that Mitt is able to do this while, as he told a group in Florida, he's unemployed too.

Was there nobody on his campaign staff that suggested that this might not be the best time to build a beachfront mansion?
12:49 PM on 08/25/2011
I suppose its the same as no one on Obama's staff suggesting that this might not be the best time to go on a vacation to Martha's Vineyard.
04:43 AM on 08/27/2011
It gives you the idea that he identifies with the little guy. That is,if the little guy had a few million dollars in the bank.
No Mitt, don't waste any more of your money .Rick Perry is gaining on you. And heck ! Michelle Bachmann looks like a good choice after all.

Nearly every politician here is wealthy. Perhaps the Dems could nominate some homeless people that could relate to the poor people. Do you think that would improve government?

Mittens is wealthy. I don't care for the man but would take him over Perry any day, any time.
Houses in La Jolla are insanely expensive. I guess what I'm saying in a clumbsy (sp?) way is that it is NOT that he's building a HUGE home, but his wording. Many in gov't are wealthy, from Huntsman, to Feinstein to Pelosi to Harmon (ex gov't)..both parties have uber-rich members. Mittens just put his foot in his mouth on this one. Aside from that, yes it WILL provide decent jobs for about a year of construction.
