Tar Sands Pipeline Protests Continue (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 08/21/11 06:11 PM ET Updated: 10/21/11 06:12 AM ET

“The only thing we need is more company. We don’t need your sympathy, we need your company," Tar Sands Action leader Bill McKibben said from jail, according to Jamie Henn of 350.org.

An estimated 45 additional arrests were made on Sunday as thousands of protestors continued their efforts to fight the Keystone XL pipeline. Over the course of two weeks, people for Tar Sands Action plan to continue a sit-in at the White House as an act of civil disobedience to urge President Obama to reject the requested Keystone XL pipeline permit.

According to Henn, up to 100 people were expected to attend a training on Sunday night to prepare for Monday's sit-ins, including a group of Nebraska farmers and a ranchers. Jane Kleeb, Director of Bold Nebraska, said:

Back home we are fighting to protect our land and water. We decided to bring that fight to the President’s doorstep because our families’ legacies, those that homesteaded the very land now threatened by a foreign oil company, are too important for us sit on the sidelines. We are acting on our values and expect our President to act as well.

The Canadian Press reports that by the end of the year, Obama will decide whether or not to permit the pipeline to be built. Despite much opposition, advocates argue that the pipeline would create many jobs and decrease U.S. reliance on foreign oil.

A CBS/AP report suggests that President Obama's decision could influence environmentalists who once voted for him:

Holding a sign that read "Obama, will you stand up to big oil?", protesters lingered outside the White House even after police announced they would be arrested if they did not move.

One by one, police called protesters out of the crowd, placed them under arrest and led them into a police vehicle.

THE FARELESS URBAN MASS TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM (FUMTS) AND THE WORLD OIL DEPLETION CRISISBy John M. Bachar, Jr.
It's no secret that the world is fast running out of petroleum, that every urban region in the USA (indeed, on Earth) is choking in 24/7 transportation gridlock, and that the transportation sector uses the overwhelming majority of petroleum. Read the analysis about how to massively reduce the vast amount of petroleum used by the transportation sector and, at the same time, about how to solve the gridlock situation for hundreds of millions of drivers and passengers by means of FUMTS. Financing this system literally involves no cost to 99% of the citizens. It will save hundreds of millions of hours that are wasted by people crawling along at a snail’s pace in continual gridlock conditions as well as saving hundreds of billions of dollars in costs for the enormous population of motorists and passengers who daily need transportation.

If you go to the protest be sure NOT to use any carbon products, like flying (fuel) or a car( even electric is from coal plants) or a bicycle {tires) Don't eat any food ( came from tractors, fertilizer, shipping, coal plant electricity to store and process if we starve the people in the cities then it will return to its natural ecosystem ) don't use toilet paper it was produced from trees and waste goes into the streams) and if you get hurt or ill don't take the meds (they are made from carbon by products packed in plastic{carbon} & an ambulance uses fuel)
I think you get the idea, if you live in a city, eat food and ride your bicycle, turn on the lights at nite, you are a hypocrite , YOU ARE THE PROBLEM. You want to protest and go back to urban life and use the thousands of oil products.
If we don't have this oil it will be shipped to China they are ready to invest $ now & wait till you see how they treat the ecosystems. We need this oil now till we can find a new fuel source. Even if we return to a 3 world nation we will have to burn wood for heat and cooking.
Oil is far from perfect but you wouldn't want to live in a world without it. Everything in the stores where you shop is there because of oil.

No one is saying that we can get off oil 100% and right away. We are in transition and during that time we want to choose the best possible direction to invest our resources in. The tar sands are not going away tomorrow but to build an environmental disaster waiting to happen such as this pipeline is very short sighted- we should look at other alternatives. The protestors are not the problem-we have a right given by the constitution to disagree with our government. Do you live in a community that could be directly affected by a spill? Do you think you might feel differently if the river that runs near your home was no longer something you wanted children to play in or people to fish out of?

If you can't risk being arrested, go to the Anacostia police station and applaud those who have. Show your support for the protection of our environment. NASA scientists are saying that if the devastation of the Arboreal forests is not stopped it "game over."

Jan, so correct; the Earth's arboreal forests are going. Science predicts, in just 50 years, the Earth will be a forest-less planet! Now, this should scare the socks off folks.

Forested ecosystems are the Earth's water factories and naturally take care of C02 and methane, and when deforested, these heat trapping gases will be released! Many examples exist, upon deforestation the climate will grow hotter and drier.

Yes, destroying ecosystems and their biological diversity is as dangerous as man's ignorance ever gets. All ecosystems are inter-connected, and all have feedbacks and loops to the climate and the atmosphere. And, all integrated ecosystems and their biological diversity create the life zone of Mother Earth or her biosphere/ecosphere.

This is an historic issue. I don't know why it is not on the HuffPost front page. To further understand the issue view this video: http://vimeo.com/27902739 and/or go to this website: http://www.tarsandsaction.org/invitation/ During this two week protest many will be arrested for refusing to "move on." We should all be there.

your the sad case, i have an unreclaimed strip mine behind me, i know what mining can do but i also know nature is stronger than man. you fail to face reality in the fact that the oil sands will be mined just as coal will be mined, so we may as well benefit from it in one way or the other. you can keep your video i dont bother with propaganda.

Why would you assume treehuggers are commies? If you weren't a tree hugger, you would be dead. Little oxygen existed on the planet until the advent of oxygen releasing and water transpiring green plants and trees! Perhaps, you are just a brainwashed drone!

The science of ecology has nothing to do with politics. Would you call your physician a commie because he is literate in a science? Tossing politics and personal opinions into science is reflective of nothing but ignorance. Though I have a good hold on the ecology of our ecosystem dependent Earth, I am totally ignorant as to so called communism. Calling Americans literate in the ecology of the Earth commies is so cliche and so utterly ignorant as to all the why's the Earth gives and sustains all life, including your very own!

Absolutely. As the majority thinking rules in a so called democracy, the majority IQ and societal voice also rule. Almost everyone's IQ rests in the center of the bell curve of human intelligence; therefore, the average mind represents all policy decisions and the majority societal voices and thinking while the most intelligent among us are in the way minority.

Thus, the so called authorities maybe the noisiest in the bell fry but are certainly not the brightest bell ringer, precisely why the Earth is sliding into oblivion. The authorities are frequently clueless, especially as to the ecology of our ecosystem dependent Earth.

Protests, as usual, are a sideline. The real question is : Does the US want additional supplies of reliable, and ethical oil ? from a friend. or, continue to rely on thugs and gangsters. Yes, or No.
