Women led the way in the coverage of the rebel advance into the Libyan capital of Tripoli on Sunday night.

Opposition forces (aided by NATO and the US) swept into Tripoli and quickly captured much of the city. News networks, which had mostly taken their eye off the Libyan war, quickly turned their sights to the country and began round-the-clock coverage of what was described repeatedly as the last day of the Gaddafi regime. On Sky News, on Al Jazeera and on CNN, viewers saw women correspondents sweep in with them, often in helmets and flak jackets, and produce intense, riveting accounts of what was happening around them.

On Al Jazeera, Zeina Khodr gave a report from Green Square, in the heart of Tripoli, that was replayed for hours. Surrounded by cheering and gunfire, she said that Triploi was "now in the hands of the opposition." She was also pushed by rebel soldiers as she gave her report.

WATCH:

Sky News correspondent Alex Crawford was the first to bring viewers pictures from Tripoli. She rolled in on a rebel convoy, saying she was wearing a helmet because so many celebratory bullets were flying around her.

WATCH:

And on CNN, Sara Sidner traveled into Tripoli and found herself in what she described as an extremely tense situation. Crouched behind a building, she reported amidst gun battles and heavy fighting.

I got a feeling that Hollywood and lib fashion babes are gonna start wearing combat helmets at Starbuck's and dopey places like that. Just a hunch.

really, "justice goodyear", so women are always at greater risk for anything and everything anywhere, huh? than explain why the lying supposedly dying iranian FEMALE hostage was freed, is now as healthy as can be, even as she so honorably simply LEFT her male FIANCEE and MALE friend behind to be tortured and now, apparently, sentenced to 8 years in an Iranian prison.

under ANY circumstance, women are coddled in the vast majority of cases, in any and every situation; while males of any age are always at a much higher risk of being killed, brutalized or in any other way, including rape and genital torture. why, even in THIS country, under the GREAT republican president BWB, we saw photographs of WOMEN torturing helpless men. great president; women are all angels and victims , and i just saw a unicorn.

Tell me again why these reporters seem to think they need to be where the bullets are flying? Just as they stand in the rain and the wind during a hurricane? Yes, I know the wind blows and the rain falls and bullets kill me.

wow. amazing. so a handful of WOMEN were reporting from libya nd this is a MAJOR news story? how prepsterous. what about the 99% of reporters there who are MALE? where are the stories about them?

and how about the 100% of MEN and BOYS who are FIGHTING thins war in defense of the people against gaddafhi?

yes, the feminist world sees only ONE thingEVER. that a single woman doing anything makes her a hero or a victim (usually a victim), but that the same thing, wherein 99% of said people are MEN or BOYS is not worthy of a single word or mention.

God Bless the 99% of MEN AND BOYS there who are doing 99.5% of ANY heavy lifting, including the reporting.

Great, these people want to get famous by putting themselves in harm's way - fine, just don't come crying when they don't make it back.

Why no mention of two excellent reporters from MPR?

Lourdes Garcia-Navarro and Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson, to be precise.

These two women consistently report from the front lines from the Middle East to North Africa with outstanding journalism.

Women have every right to be in these types of situations but why would they?  This is no place for a journalist, male or female.  As we saw in Egypt, female journalists are subjected to additional dangers and risks that men are not.  It makes no sense.

It only needs to make sense to them, they and they alone should make the decision to go or not to go, just like any man makes the same decision. I personally wouldn't do it, but they are obviously willing and able to go.

The corporate media really knows how to keep the eyeballs on the screen. Gunfire popping in the background, smoke swirling nearby, the anxious words of a reporter giving the street-view testimonial.

Hook 'em good, eh.

these women wearing army helmets look like absolute goofballs...no one can be taken seriously as a journalist when they are wearing a bucket on their head at an angle...

It is important to know how to wear your PPE, and the posted photo looks more like a photoshop failure than anything

Instead of looking up to these women, our girls look up people like Miley Cyrus or Britney S who undress at the drop of a hat.

I have a feeling a lot of women are going to be reporting in Libya because the country has over 150 different klans and tribes, they are all going to want to be leaders to get rich from oil reserves. So the fighting there is going to be endless because I am sure all the klans and tribes are going to kill whoever becomes their new leader. Maybe not, I hope I'm wrong.

Hopefully they're not too far out in front. Another news crew was ambushed by a counter attack.

why is this even an issue..
this is 2011.
who cares?
my mother was judge back in the 80's . there were not alot of women judges at that time.
Some one wrote an article about her , and referred to her as a "TOMBOY."
it is all about equality, not male and female. .
who cares if u r a man or woman.........u r doing your job.
that is wonderful.

Really! Ask your mother if it was such a minor point in her life, or in the lives of other women, to see a women in a position of power. I think you need to have that kind of conversation with her. You might be surprised at what you hear.
09:40 PM on 08/22/2011
I don't care to hear about women getting abused by thugs. I doubt your mother had to deal with that here in a civilized country.
