Florida's High-Speed Rail Money Officially Sent To Northeast Corridor

Florida High Speed Rail

WASHINGTON -- Half a year after Florida Gov. Rick Scott rejected $2.4 billion in federal money to help build high-speed rail structures inside his state, the cash has been sent to other portions of the country.

The U.S. Department of Transportation announced on Tuesday that roughly $745 million of Florida's portion of high-speed rail money had been "obligated" toward upgrades on heavily used Amtrak lines in the Northeast Corridor -- $449.94 million alone will be spent on upgrading electrical systems and tracks between Trenton, N.J. and New York City; another $295.78 million will be spent on alleviating traffic congestion on those lines.

The remaining Florida funds will be spent throughout the country (not just in the more reliably Democratic northeast). Roughly $400 million is set to expand high-speed rail service in the Midwest; $336.2 million is set to be invested in state-of-the-art locomotives and rail cars for California and the Midwest; and another $300 million will be spent building the nation’s first 220 mph high-speed rail system in California. Those investments, however, have not yet been obligated, according to a Department of Transportation official. In addition, $400 million of Florida's high-speed rail funds has been rescinded by Congress.

That said, the issuance of the first chunk of Florida's money puts an end to a particularly illustrative chapter of the sometimes-disjointed nature of Tea Party politics. Scott was one of several newly elected Republican governors who made a show by turning down money for high-speed rail projects in his state. Beyond providing some fiscal conservative symbolism, however, the refusal of those funds did very little. The money was already allocated and destined to be spent. And many other Republican lawmakers were privately petitioning the Department for the help.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood hinted at as much during a sit down interview with The Huffington Post in early May.

“Even though we have had these little hiccups in three states,” he said, “when this system is done, Ohio will be connected, Florida will be connected, Wisconsin will be connected because this is what the people want. The people are way ahead of the elected officials on this.”

"I don’t even lose like one second of sleep over the fact that three states turned it down because we have given $13 billion out," he added. "I wasn’t saying this in jest. I really believe there is only one person in Florida who didn’t want high-speed rail because we heard from thousands of other people who were so disappointed. The same is true in Wisconsin. I only know one person in each of those states who was against it."

trains should not be a priority in FLA. Trains should be the priority in congested states like CA, especially SoCal. It makes sense to upgrade the NE corridor since so many people rely on the railway. Putting in a rail system in FLA is premature and would be an absolute waste of govt money. If you are going to spend money, spend it where you get the biggest bang for your buck, and I don't mean political capital.

When Gov. Ricky was asked why he thought he needed to test aid receipiants. He said it was because there was a higher incidence of drug activity among those on state aid than the rest of the state. So they started testing a couple of weeks ago and guess what they found? While the use of illegal drugs within the entire state is estamated at 8.9% of the states population, the results of the drug testing on state aid receipiants is 2%. So apparently the govenor who thought taking those federal funds were wasting money, thinks spending the states dwindling income on drug tests on people who aren't using drugs is good. Do you think it might have something to do with his wife owning that testing firm?

Lets see if they turn down the money from FEMA after Hurricane Irene hits.
Hopefully FEMA can be successful seeing they voted to cut its budget too.
Its too bad we cant make them stick to pledge of refusing Federal money
and their goal of lessening government, after all this would a state problem
and should handle and paid for by the state according to their rhetoric.

At least Florida's governor waited until he was in office. Here in Ohio, Kasich refused the money (and it was withdrawn) before he even took office. So... Where are the jobs, Kasich?

Notice how many people who are against high speed rail like to throw around the word....."choo choo"?

If thats you, grow up.

Very forward thinking Governor. And the construction jobs would have been only temporary so why tease the construction workers. We love Scott, he is do thoughtful.

Love reading these comments, these are classic "progressive" lines. In one article you'll hear, well then don't take any federal stimulus money, send all the money to Blue States and the Red States can go to h*ll. blah, blah, blah, then, when someone doesn't take the money the same pundits are like, shees, what an idiot. Its ironic, precious, and predictable!!!

What kind of an excuse for conservatives is this? If you don't want to make progress, don't take the money, and when the state turns down money, why isn't that idiotic? Are you defending progressives in a backhanded way? yes you are.

I love how Obama uses taxpayer money to perform patronage. Very reminiscent of the corrupt practices of FDR.

Fortunately, Obama will be out on his own light rail in 2012.

I wish we had a president who could live up to the promises he gave when he ran for president. A president that, when he had control of Congress for two years, squandered it.

Then there's this:

Yeah he has already figured out a way to put the states money in the family coffers.
His wife owns the company doing the drug testing on aid receipiants.

Hey, Ricky, I'll bet you are REALLY glad to see this story in the news every couple of weeks. Kinda reminds the entire country how out of touch you really are. I'll also bet the good citizens of Florida are ecstatic about it, too. Good luck (not).

The similarities between Governor Rick Scott and the corrupt, lazy, meddling insiders and bureaucrats who destroy America's efforts to complete a high speed rail network in Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" are almost hilarious enough to prompt me to finish the last several hundred pages of that early-'1960's version of a Fabio-adorned romantic thriller.

Do the math. This is the official Tampa to Orlando rail site. There will be three stops between the two end stations, thereby negating much of the "high speed" concept. You will still need some kind of transportation to and from the stations. Going from Tampa to St Pete Beach would take a lot of time with connecting transportation. ONE WAY fares would be 15 to 30 dollars, depending on frequency of use. Tourists would pay the higher fare. Do the math for a family of four. Then you still need a bus or rental car when you get to the station. The time and money does not work out. Tourists will simply rent the car to begin with. Wishing and hoping doesn't do the trick.

Seriously? Let's be realists. If they built a high speed train in the swamp that went in a little circle, 2.4 BILLION dollars would be rolling around in Floriduh worker's pockets. Not that our economy NEEDS help, of course. This ijit ran on, "Let's get to work*!"
* Not with federal dollars and not before 2012 in case it makes Obama look good, but soon after 2012 we are really, really, going to work on jobs... After we lay off all the teachers, cops, and firefighters, of course.

Seriously, the question is whether people are going to ride the train and how much it will cost to operate when it doesn't get the projected ridership. Your speech doesn't change any of that.

What this Country needs is more Republican Governors to take the highly principled position that Rick Scott has taken regarding High Speed Rail. How about Wisconsin or Michigan or Texas? Common, your states can very well do without those nasty federal funds ! Show the strength of your convictions, for Heaven's sake !!!

In the mean time Washington, you can find Pennsylvania just slightly to the East of Ohio; somewhat south of New York and just North of The Mason/Dixon.

We'll take all 'ya got :)
