Greek Yogurt Sales Rise 2500% In Just Five Years

First Posted: 08/23/2011 11:37 am Updated: 10/24/2011 6:12 am

In the past five years, U.S. sales of Greek-style yogurt -- which is strained of excess water to become thick, flavorful and high in protein -- have risen from $60 million a year to a staggering $1.5 billion a year, according to a fantastic report by NPR. That means that in just half a decade, one of the worst economic periods of the 20th century, sales of Greek yogurt grew 2500%.

Growth in the sector has not gone unnoticed. In March, Business Insider picked up a report by UBS that indicated that sales were doubling every year, calling it "one of the hottest-growing food categories of all time." The New York Times did a piece in February profiling market leader Chobani's advertising efforts. And Nielsen commented on the trend as early as October.

The reports all agree on one driver of the rapid adoption: health. Consumers have consistently cited Greek yogurt's low-fat, high-protein nutritional profile as a major reason for splurging on the style, which often costs twice as much as its competitors. The most enthusiastic customers have generally been affluent women -- just the type of person who would love to be told by John Stamos that Greek yogurt is "the best in the world."

I love this stuff! I also love Siggi's Icelandic Skry - it's low on sugar and tangy. I started making my own yogurt recently in homage of my Armenian grandfather who used to make it all the time and just flavor with jam.

If you live in an area where there are people of middle eastern decent lebenese, syrian etc. you can usually find a deli or grocery stre that sells homeade Laban which is quite similar and a lot cheaper than the brand name yougurts like Faege etc. or you can get lebna which is a lot heavier but also great once and a while

Yogurt with sugar defeats its healthful purpose. Yogurt without sugar barely sells.

I get the fat free plain Greek yogurt at Trader Joes, add fresh fruit and just a little bit of honey. Yum!

The Greek yogurt I buy, Zoi, is headquartered in Washington state.

Chobani is the best and their story of how they came to be is even better. Kraft shut down their yogurt plant in Upstate NY and "Since late 2007, the former Kraft plant about 60 miles southeast of Syracuse has been home to Chobani, the best-selling Greek yogurt in the United States. The plant now has 600 employees (and growing)".

I can buy it for $.99 all day long here, it's wonderful. And I agree about the mango flavor, it's delightful.

Vosko's Greek yogurt is delicious but very high in calories -- of course. Since the first time I tasted Chobani a year or two ago I've eaten nothing but. I eat a Chobani every night and I don't care what flavor it is. I love them all. And they have a lot fewer calories than most Greek yogurt.

I love greek yogurt. I eat Liberté, a Canadian company. I only eat the plain kind, which has no sugar and 18 grams of protein. It's really creamy and delicious.

Has to be the high fat version, tastes like cheesecake, the low tastes like plain ol yogurt at 2 bucks a cup.

Not true - I love the fat free with fruit and honey - full fat is too rich to eat enough to take advantage of the nutrition. The full fat is good as a substitute for sour cream.
08:38 PM on 08/24/2011
Is not! The full fat is too creamy and rich tasting, it also lacks the tang of sour cream. The nutrition is enough to take advantage of if you're substituting for a cheese cake craving rather than as another yogurt. Has to be Fage, that Oiko stuff doesn't count.

I think Trader Joe's Apricot-Mango has very little flavor. Chobani mango is delish but hard to find.

I've been eating Greek yogurt for several years. I like it because it isn't runny. I've noticed the popularity because major brands are making it and it's being stocked at the local big chain grocery so I don't have to go to a specialty store to get it anymore.

I love plain greek yogurt mixed in a blender with frozen fruit, milk, a splash of lemon juice and sweetened to taste. This smoothie gets me through the morning at work.
