Old Navy College Tees Debut With Poor Grammar (UPDATED)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 08/23/2011 8:28 am Updated: 10/24/2011 5:12 am

It's not as bad as Abercrombie's gaffes, nor Zara's nor American Apparel's. But Old Navy did make a small mistake that has some grammar sticklers speaking out.

The Daily News reports that Old Navy produced a new line of college and NFL team tees called "Superfan Nation," with a variety of products reading, "Let's go!!" for dozens of teams. But almost every shirt, unfortunately, reads "Lets go!!" No apostrophe.

Huge deal? Depends on whom you ask. College professors tend to be perfectionists about such things... Old Navy, not so much. The tees are all still available on the retailer's website -- but we're guessing all the rowdy, yelling fans at your next college football viewing party won't notice the grammatical error.

Hey, at least Old Navy didn't pull an Urban Outfitters and make a $28 million lawsuit-worthy t-shirt.

UPDATE: Reps from Old Navy have contacted us, saying, "We're sorry about the error in some of our SuperFan Nation graphic t-shirts. To ensure Old Navy customers can enjoy this collection fully, we're replacing the faulty tees at our stores and online as soon as possible."

The question is... of what?
04:05 PM on 08/24/2011
A missing apostrophe is a problem with punctuation, not grammar. >.>

This is where the article is, genius.

Why is this news? I haven't heard or seen decent or even respectable grammar on television or in the movies for YEARS! Years ago on most television programs you would heard fairly decent grammar being spoken. Not anymore. Sit there and listen to MOST programs, it's enough to make English teachers fall to their knees in tears. I personally can spot someone's ethnic group on the telephone within about 10 seconds after the person on the other end opens their mouth. Most ethnic groups' speech habits lost any connection to proper grammar decades ago. Now, it's over 90 percent of people, including many college graduates, that couldn't tell you the correct grammar in a sentence if their life depended upon it happening.

"I haven't heard or seen decent or even respectable grammar on television or in the movies for YEARS!"

Speech on tv and movies sounds perfectly natural to me, which in book means it's grammatical. Grammar is always about context--ungrammatical speech just sounds weird.

Standard Written English (SWE) is very artificial. It's a language that has never been spoken at any point in English history. Many principles are based on a mythic form of English comprised of usages that were common at different points in the 18th and 19th centuries. It's important to learn when writing for publications, or in formal contexts, but it is NOT the English language. The English language is vastly more rich, more evocative, and more changeable.

If you're watching fictional tv, then the characters should be expected to speak grammatically in their context. If everyone started spouting impeccable SWE, you'd instantly know something weird was up. And in that context, I would consider it ungrammatical.

Grammar is incredibly complex and subtle, yet after a few years, every child picks it up by a process of imitation of those around them. Then, they go to school and learn the formal, artificial art of writing standard English. They may master it if they go on to college and grad school. But those who don't still manage to speak grammatical informal English.

The only people who regularly make grammatical errors are young children, and people learning English as a second language.

what do you mean "most ethnic groups (btw, no apostrophe needed) speech habits lost any connection to proper grammar decades ago?" Aren't you concerned that this statement makes you look like a racist? Do I hear a drawl y'awl?

Or, is the t-shirt actually an accurate and ironic editorial on "Most college professors say freshmen and sophomores lack basic writing, grammar, and math skills, ..."

Kind of trifling when you have the potus who is commander in chief of the armed forces and he can't pronounce "corpsman" correctly.
Have been in an Old Navy store one time. They named it right as the stuff looked old and been in a navy locker for years.

There is a difference between an accent and mispronunciation.Have you never heard of New Yawk or No'leans.Funny though that he "Obama" can pronounce all of the Muslim countries names correctl! Plus he has yet to name those other seven states he thinks we have.
And thank you,I do have a lot of nerve.

Heck, I'm surprised that they are able to spell "go" correctly. Watch out for Irene and those flash mobs. Have fun if you run into any of them. And remember share the wealth. Don't be greedy.

Whats the big deel? The like of an apostrophe is not the wurst of mistake's I've seen in grammer (as in Kelsey?) The article did peak my interest. Face it, American's are idiots for spelling, grammer and sintax; their moron's.
