Pat Delany Resigns Jennifer Delany Email

(AP) TRENTON, N.J. — A freshman Republican lawmaker resigned because his wife sent "an offensive and racist" email to the Democratic state Senate campaign of nine-time Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis, a GOP official acknowledged Monday.

Pat Delany stepped down from the state Assembly this month and said he wouldn't seek a full term in November because of his wife's missive to Lewis' campaign, Burlington County Republican Chairman Bill Layton said. Delany originally cited an unspecified family issue as the reason for his abrupt resignation.

Delany and his wife, Jennifer Delany, are white. Lewis, a political novice who's among the greatest athletes of all time, is black.

Jennifer Delany's email to Lewis' campaign said, in part, "Imagine having dark skin and name recognition and the nerve to think that equaled knowing something about politics."

Layton said Pat Delany decided to leave office to shield his three children from "a hurtful and embarrassing public spectacle involving their mother."

"Former Assemblyman Pat Delany's wife inexplicably sent an offensive and racist email in response to a routine email from Carl Lewis' campaign; her actions were inexcusable," Layton said.

Delany said in a statement that he and his wife don't share the same racial views. He said he was sorry.

"On behalf of my family, we sincerely apologize to Mr. Lewis for any pain this caused him," he said.

Neither the Delanys nor Lewis could be reached by telephone for comment Monday.

Lewis is running for state Senate in New Jersey's 8th Legislative District. Delany was part of the opposing GOP Assembly slate in the district.

Lewis and Republicans have been fighting over whether he meets the state's four-year residency requirement for state Senate candidates. He grew up in Willingboro, a middle-class town between Philadelphia and Trenton, but recently has lived in California, where he owns a home.

He went to Texas for college and in 1984 moved from track star to celebrity when he won four gold medals at the Los Angeles Olympics. Over the next 12 years, he would collect five more golds at the Olympics.

New Jersey's top elections official, Republican Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno, ruled Lewis ineligible to run for office this spring, and this month she declined to certify his name for the November ballot.

Lewis, 50, challenged the ruling in federal and state courts.

A federal appeals court allowed Lewis' name to appear on June primary ballots, and he won his party's nomination with 2,418 votes in an uncontested race. Republican Sen. Dawn Addiego won her uncontested party primary with 4,350 votes, and the two would face off in the GOP-leaning district in November, if the courts allow.

Lewis contends he moved back to New Jersey in 2005, when he bought homes for himself and his mother. He has been a volunteer high school track coach since 2007 and has had a valid New Jersey driver's license since 2006.

However, records show that he voted in California through 2009, which Republicans contend made him a legal resident of that state.

Lewis exhausted his appeals in state court when the New Jersey Supreme Court declined to hear the case. The issue before the federal court is whether the state's residency requirement for state Senate candidates violates the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment as applied to Lewis.

Lewis contends that he knows the issues facing the district and that voters know who he is.

I'm suspicious Pat Delany resigned so quickly and w/o incident, there has to be more to this story. I'm thinking Mrs Delany's inappropriate email to Carl Lewis was just the tip of the iceberg. Probably a long history of racists activity on behave of the Delany's which Mr Delany didn't want uncovered. Regardless i'm glad he's gone. The voters of New Jersey get to decide if Carl Lewis is experienced enough to represent them, not Jennifer Delany

You assumptions are incorrect. That was all there was. Pat is a stand-up guy and instead of trying to spin it like so many other politicians do, he stepped aside. The rest of our lawmakers should have such a spine.

Some things haven't changed since the 1950's! Miss Scarlet Delaney would have fit right in in Charleston in 1860! Fortunately she does NOT fit in in 2011! She must not realize that America has changed since the Civil War, not as much as we should have, but she is happily out of style!

It's no surprise that the vast majority of republicans are hatful little racist and apparently also filled with self hating homosexuals. But it never stops surprising me how bad they are at covering their tracks.

And you know this how? Vast majority? It never stops surprising me how so many on the left can not discuss an issue without constantly using hateful demonizing rhetoric.

Nine out of ten republicans say they will take Obama on his word that he is an American citizen, as opposed to reacting violently that people should stop questioning the citizenship of a president over his dark skin. Those republicans love to keep the conversation going, instead of reacting in such a way as to make the questioner feel ashamed. They love talking about whether Obama is American. It is because they are absolute, blatant racists. The baggers who troll around on the Huffpo make a lot of racist comments as well. And baggers are republicans if they are nothing else. Not ONE person ran a race as a bagger in the 2010 election. Every last bagger ran as a republican. So any attempt to claim that republicans and baggers are different from one another is horseshit.

Here's the recent #, for your reference:

"As has been the case since 1996, there is a wide partisan division on the question of same-sex marriage. Currently 57% of Democrats favor making it legal, while only 23% of Republicans agree"

Thus, 43% of Democrats are bigots, and 77% of Republicans.
Whether that's 'vast majority' I leave to you.

--good point, feed the enemy, faved+badge. She needs to participate in an understanding diversity and she should be the apologetic and candidate for therapy.

I applaud Mr. Delany for taking the high road, instead of trying to "explain away" the hate his wife demonstrated.

Too bad his wife didn't have enough respect for her husband and family to apologize directly to Mr. Lewis. Perhaps she's checked herself into rehab...

Faved you, Vivicca, but question whether she would willingly go. She might do it if prompted by some other goal, like getting paid! I am happy we all know her point of view. And, I am satisfied that Pat Delany showed what he thought about her comments and resigned. He might be the one to get her the help she needs.

If I was him I would divorce her and ask a judge for custody. I would not want my children growing up and being influenced by a racist. I would not only want full custody I would not want her having anything to do with my children, ergo, I would want a restraining order until they are eighteen.

Sad that he needed to resign for what his wife did, but, maybe she does not want him in politics anymore.

At least that is one Republican family that will not be sharing our tax payer dollars.

As for Mr. Lewis, I like the man, but, if he voted in California recently, that will be a legal issue for him.

Didn't you not see in his article that he stepped down for his kids to avoid turmoil .Why is praise necessary for one protecting their kids? No credit deserved if he would have had better luck keeper that wife in check then maybe.Or is it like I said from the start he thinks just like her.
