EXPLAINED: Why We Have Fingernails

History Of Fingernails

Whether you bite them, paint them or click them obsessively on counter-tops, chances are you don’t realize how fascinating your fingernails really are. Just think, why do we even have them in the first place? When did they first evolve in humans?

A recently published study nailed some of those questions right on the head.

Conducted by the University of Florida, the study analyzed the oldest evidence of nails in modern primates to date -- namely, 55.8 million year-old specimens of Teilhardina brandti, an extinct lemur-like monkey -- and found that the animal used its nails to grab onto tree branches.

“Claws would be useful for certain types of climbing,” said Jonathan Bloch, co-author of the study and an associate curator of vertebrate paleontology at the Florida Museum of Natural History. “But having nails would have helped with grasping small branches and manipulating small food items such as fruits, nuts and flowers.”

So nails are tools, claws are climbers.

But why do these findings have scientists so excited? Because they’re likely the precursors of the nails that we see on primates today, including humans, Bloch says. Which means our nails are much older than we ever realized!

Next time you’re unscrewing that baby bottle, or tearing open a sugar packet to pour into your morning latte, you can thank little T. brandti. He gave you the nimble fingertips that let you do it.

Does it matter to humans what a monkey used its nails for 56 million years ago? This is fine for a science publication but not here. Nails can be used to scratch like in self defense.

We primarily use fingernails for scratching and other grooming.

because it would look silly if we painted the tips of our fingers instead?

Dede Eagleburger,

I like your answer, although I dislike the whole fingernail painting thing a great deal.

Interesting. I always thought they were at least partly for protecting the densely packed / very numerous nerve endings at our fingertips...

That is very funny! Ron Paul is extremely logical and wants to take the soldiers out of other countires and declare war on poverty.

Ron Paul isn't your typical Republican. He really isn't a republican at all. He's a Libertarian. Some politician who are actually Independent go with one of the major parites or the other because that way they have a caucus.
Same with Bernie Sanders who is an Independant/Socialist who caucuses with the Democrats.
So you are kind of wrong here. gparks wasn't talking about Ron Paul. They were talking about republicans, which Ron Paul is in name only. Everyone knows that except you.

Yes it is funny ... but not ha ha ha!

Oh and regarding Paul ... there HAS been a war on poverty in the US since the 60's ... Paul has voted in many instances NOT to fund it!

"When did they first evolve in humans?" What is this "evolve" think you speak of?

I have noticed that when I am (clumsily) mincing veggies on a cutting board, having nails keeps me from amputating my finger tips.
