Anne Hathaway Studied 'Emmerdale,' A British Soap Opera, For Her 'One Day' Accent

A British Soap Opera Inspired Anne Hathaway's Universally Mocked 'One Day' Accent

As "One Day" continues to trail every summer movie it possibly can at the box office, even "The Smurfs," everyone continues to ask Anne Hathaway how the hell she came up with that accent. Apparently one of the culprits is "Emmerdale," a long-running British family farm drama (yes) set in the fictional Yorkshire town of Emmerdale.

Hathaway told a reporter at the movie's London premiere that she watched the soap for its consistencies, since the natives she spoke with had often dropped or changed their accent over the course of upwardly mobile lives (we argued much the same last week).

Here's a clip of this year's season of "Emmerdale" (which looks pretty addicting). Compare if you like with Hathaway's Yorkshire, posted below.
