Anne Hathaway's 'One Day' Accent Causes Worry, Criticism

Anne Hathaway

LONDON — Anne Hathaway felt the pressure to deliver the goods in her latest role.

The American actress brings David Nicholls' character of Emma Morely to the big screen in the adaptation of his book, "One Day."

Hathaway said as a book lover she understood the need to please fans of the best-selling novel.

"People feel so possessive over Emma and so it's not only that they want you to get her right, they really don't want you to get her wrong."

The director, Lone Scherfig – "An Education" – helped put her mind at rest, telling her that she had to concentrate on her own interpretation.

And then there is the accent. Morely is from the city of Leeds, in Yorkshire in northern England, so Brooklyn-born Hathaway had to learn a specific regional dialect for the role.

Critics have said Hathaway's attempt is distracting and unreliable.

The Oscar-nominee admitted that in preparing for the role she asked anyone she met from Yorkshire to speak to her, so she could learn the accent.

"One of the things I was struck by was that so often when people leave Yorkshire they don't hang on to the accent, the accent evens out and starts to mimic some new sounds from where they're from, so you can have 10 people from Yorkshire and they have 10 completely utterly different accents. But I worked with a dialect coach and just kind of tried my best."

Unfortunately she couldn't rely on her director for guidance: Scherfig is Danish and admits she can't pinpoint a Leeds accent.

"Yes it is a concern," she said of Hathaway's accent. "But they're actors and actors they always play things that they are not, that's part of their job."

Writer Nicholls, who adapted his novel for the screenplay, doesn't think it's an issue.

"I understand the trepidation but British actors are constantly playing American roles and it's always seen as a rather good thing and I see no reason why it shouldn't be a good thing working the other way."

The film tells the story of university friends Emma and Dexter – played by British actor Jim Sturgess – who spend the night together following their graduation.

It catches up with them on the same day of every year for 20 years to see how their lives are changing.

"One Day" opens in U.K. theaters on Wednesday.

Anne Hathaway seems like a nice woman but she's way out of her depth in most movies. The few scenes she had in Brokeback Mountain nearly killed it for me, especially the phone call scene with the ridiculous aging makeup. She's a very one-dimensional performer who could benefit from some real study.

Why can't they just cast British actors and actresses for British movies or movies that has British characters? Its not like they lack talent there, I think some Brit actresses are more talented than Anne Hathaway, imho.

Kate Winslet, Russel Crowe, Emma Thompson, Anthony Hopkins, Nicole Kidman, Jude Law, Colin Farrell, Franka Potente, Ben Kingsley, Heath Ledger, and Gary Oldman (just to name a few) are foreign actors who have adopted American "accents" for roles in films.

Were you equally as indignant about that?

I'm just saying its about casting, many more up and coming actress that can do a lot better than anne in this movie, imho, that's why i said why didn't they just cast a british actress. ..and yes, im perfectly aware of other foreign actors adopting "american" accents and in some cases they succeed, some don't just like anne in this movie.
sheesshh.. never thought this was going to be such a touchy subject..

Every time that I hear someone faking an accent -- even if the person does it perfectly -- I remember the line in "Gosford Park":

These people have authentic British accents!

What is it in an accent, anyway?

"Brooklyn-born Hathaway"... She may have been born in Brooklyn, but there's nothing Brooklyn about the accent, let alone Hathaway herself. Not sure why this was included in piece -- it's irrelevant.

She is SUCH a bad actor and has Julia Roberts syndrome...one decent movie that people flock to and all of a sudden she's everywhere, and still, zero talent. There are so many good actors waiting for a chance...too bad Tinseltown has to always think about $$$. See more Indie films...that is where the true talent lies...and off Broadway...

I think you're on to something.
Julia's throne goes to Anne, seems that's already decided. They both have really big mouths, and I think Hathaway is pretty, but they both suck at their craft. Just what America wants, more of the same.
Yes, the indies are always worth it.
All the rest, nah.

Hearing that accent in the commercials was enough to turn me off. I couldnt' bear two hours of that. Why didn't they just hire a British actress?

Well, it sucks. And you would have thought after "Becoming Jane" she would have gotten help with it. It's not good Yorkshire or even a good standard English accent.
09:09 AM on 08/24/2011
Having heard the accent, Anne seemed under-coached. That Yorkshire accent is a tough nut to crack, and American dramatic training is leaves actors woefully unprepared to learn accents compared to the British actors I have known. Having spent some time in several cities in Yorkshire - and loving it - the accent can be quite difficult to understand let alone mimic.

There are plenty of British actors who can't pull off a convincing American accent either. Rachel Weiss immediately comes to mind.
