Poll Shows Rick Perry Surging Ahead Of GOP 2012 Pack

Rick Perry Polls

WASHINGTON -- Three new national polls released on Wednesday show Texas Gov. Rick Perry rocketing ahead of Mitt Romney and the rest of the announced candidates as the first choice of Republicans to be their 2012 presidential nominee.

A new survey conducted late last week by Gallup finds Perry to be the choice of 29 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents nationwide, followed by Mitt Romney with 17 percent, Ron Paul at 13 percent and Michelle Bachman scoring 10 percent. All other announced candidates received 4 percent or less, and 17 percent of Republicans nationwide expressed no preference.

The second survey, conducted using an automated methodology by the Democratic firm Public Policy Polling (PPP), found a similar result. Testing just the announced candidates, PPP finds Perry leading with 33 percent, followed by Romney at 20 percent and Bachmann with 16 percent. All other candidates received 8 percent or less and just 5 percent were undecided.

Finally, a new online survey of likely Republican primary voters conducted over the last week by the Economist and YouGov shows Perry leading with 23 percent, followed by Romney (15 percent), Paul (11 percent), Bachmann (9 percent), Cain (8 percent) and all others with less than 6 percent with 11 percent undecided.

The new results represent a rapid transformation in the current Republican vote preference. Neither Gallup nor PPP tested Perry as a likely Republican candidate in June, and both added his name to surveys conducted July. A month ago, Gallup showed Romney leading Perry -- 23 percent to 18 percent -- and the rest of the GOP field. At the same time, PPP showed Bachman and Romney in a virtual tie, receiving 21 and 20 percent respectively, with Perry trailing at 12 percent. But Perry's official entry into the race on August 11 helped boost his name recognition and reshape the current standings.

The new poll clearly moves Perry ahead on our trend estimate chart, which combines results from all public polls.

The volatility in Republican preferences is not surprising, given the lack of a dominant early frontrunner. Many of the candidates -- Perry included -- begin with low national profiles and can rocket up as they gain attention and name recognition. Though potentially fleeting, these snapshots do give a sense of the ongoing deliberation among the most active and influential Republicans about their 2012 nominee.

Both the Gallup and PPP surveys, for example, show Perry leading Romney by better than two-to-one margins among conservative Republicans, while Romney still holds a narrow advantage among moderate and liberal Republicans.

2011-08-24-Blumenthal-gopprefideology.png

Perry's apparent move among conservatives should come as a significant concern to Mitt Romney, who led Michelle Bachmann (by a 29 to 22 percent margin) and the rest of the field among self-described conservatives on Gallup's July survey.

Of even greater concern may be a hypothetical head-to-head matchup between Perry and Romney on the PPP poll. They show Perry leading Romney by a 16-point margin (52 to 36 percent), with much of Perry's support coming from conservatives. If that pattern holds, up, Perry stands to gain if other conservative candidates fade and the race narrows to a contest against Romney.

The consistency of these results comes despite very different methodologies. Gallup uses traditional methods including live interviewers and samples from the all landline and mobile cell phones. PPP samples from a list of registered voters and uses an automated, recorded voice methodology that prevents them from sampling Americans in cell phone-only households. YouGov samples respondents from an "opt-in" panel of respondents recruited to complete surveys, a methodology that is the subject of an ongoing debate in the survey world.

Perry's fast rise is the sign of a race still very much in flux, but the consistency of the trend across multiple surveys using widely varying methodologies suggests it is very real, at least for now. If Perry can consolidate a strong first impression among conservatives, he will be formidable contender in 2012.

Hmmm... "Despite dismal debate performance, Perry leads in nationwide poll." Is anybody really surprised? Gov. Rick Perry's "Two Step" Political Strategy: 1) Tax Evasion for the Rich & Powerful and 2) Endorsement of the Evangelical Agenda provides him with Unlimited Financial Resources... plus, support from the Most Politically Active "Pulpits" in the Nation!

Following his election to President, Rick Perry will:

(1) Ban mention of global warming in public schools

(2) Institute a national Christian only prayer day

(3) Ban the teaching of evolution in public schools

(4) Institute a second national Christian only prayer day

(5) Eliminate the capital gains tax, and tax on interest and dividends

(6) Institute a third national Christian only prayer day

(7) Note that unemployment continues to rise, unaffected by the tax reduction

(8) Institute a fourth national Christian only prayer day

Would be nice to have prayer days actually, and I'm not particularly Christian.

In Germany, they are hardcore secular Christians ... man, those Christian holidays - you act quiet and solemn ... even the atheists ... it works really well ...

Germany is run by 'the Christian party' and they are far more liberal than anything the US has, it's quite amazing really.

The redneck evangelicals really give religion a bad name.

Think about a good Christmas you once had: seculars and religious types can get along well during holiday festivities that have religious roots.

Why us the media making such a big deal of all the losers clowns that have entered the GOP primary run?? Trying to make something out of nothing?? None of the candidates in the lead have any intellectual leadership qualities..so call it as it is..they don't have what it takes to lead us through this difficult time..they talk religion..and cuts..etc..where are the job and stimulus plans???
The media ignores Ron Paul since he thinks we should be getting out of the 2 wars..come on media why even talk about the GOP primary circus??It's not news..it's entertainment
04:37 PM on 08/31/2011
The media ignores Ron Paul because Americans already fully rejected him in 2008. The media gives attention to the GOP because they are a 3 ring circus and not to watch is to miss out on all the fantastic entertainment. Like the beginning of American Idol.

I just learned about ron paul and what he stands for in the last 6 months. I would believe that there are many others that are looking into him more this time around. name recognition.

RICK PERRY IS AN ESTREMIST... I LIVE IN TEXAS - BELIEVE ME THIS GUY IS OFF THE WALL.

A FANATICAL RELIGIOUS MAN HE HAS TURNED THIS STATE INTO THE MOST CORRUPT STATE IN THE UNION.

Click here: Dominionism: Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry’s Dangerous Religious Bond - The Daily Beast

Do you think it is a coincidence that Perry is so often photographed with his right foot on a truck bumper or a bale of hay, or whatever.... His right hand in his pocket with a "fist bulge" We in Texas call this the "Elmer Gantry Stance. See how all those fake Christian women get ( "all a twitter)?
Rick Perry is a snake oil salesman.... A man to be more feared than admired.

Rick Perry and hissupporters are even imperiling the ability of our Universities to compete in legitimate research, a basic tenet of higher education. Perry has installed a "consultant" pushed by this donor and others on the Christian and business right, who is pushing an agenda which would imperil the ability of our Universities to even conduct and participate in any research in this country, and forget the world. That would be their agenda and purpose with Perry at the national level. Be afraid, very afraid.
The recent study published by Notre Dame has found that the baggers are less popular than Muslims. They are a strange juxtaposition for malevolence toward blacks and other minorities yet deeply religious. This is the religion of such supremacist groups that in my opinion is more of a cult. This is the religion of David Duke and Bull Conner. Of course they would love to do away with the Voting Rights Act passed in the 60s, Perry is nothing but a throwback to the old magnolia morons like George Wallace, It will be interesting to see what monies they are offered and accept from such malevolent groups with those old time hanging religions. John Birch, David Duke, and any of the ultra white sediments on the America's soil. What the hell kind of religion is so hateful and exclusive?

Dumb? not really. snake oil salesmen are not "dumb".
lol...........Slick comes to my mind.

Olde Slick Rick was about a 2.0 student at Texas A & M not very impressive.

But olde Slick Rick can be anything you want him to be. An Al Gore Democrat........no problem...........a principled Reagan Conservative.........no problem.
The FACT is Rick Perry is a professional career politician, at it for almost thirty years now. He knows what lines to use and how to move about a crowd. I know he would be a very successful Used Car Salesman, he could make millions.
He claims to be very Pro-life but he endorses Rudy, a Pro-abortion guy, for POTUS in 2008 instead of Mike Huckabee from next door Arkansas, that's a little weird.
And two weeks ago Perry said he was glad New York passed Gay marriage...................but then last week he signs the "marriage pledge" which is against Gay marriage..............................Perry hates mandates too but he by-passed his own conservative Republican legislature to mandate a shot for young High Schools girls and funny thing is Merek the drug manufacturer gave a large donation to Slick Rick a week before he signed the mandate...................isn't that weird ? This guy has a TON of baggage that's going to be rolling out of his closet for the next five months .
If you insist on voting Republican vote for Romney or Huntsman, please do not let the Devil into our White House.

This hick is not bright enough to be president; clearly does not understand history, law, economics, or foreign policy, and does not have control of his mouth. He might be good at running for office (in Texas), and he may (MAY?) be a sincere and god fearing man, but we cant afford a Forrest Gump with GWBush swagger in the White House. His goal will be full employment at the minimum wage, same as in Texas.

It is plain and it is simple ! America cannot take another hit from a George W. Bush persona ! One more president like Bush and all hell will break loose. The American people are tired of all these lies that come from politicians. He is blowing smoke up our rumps! If you ask him a straight forward question he is all over the place with the answer. I want a straight forward president! That is why I am voting for President Obama! At least you know he is honestly trying to help the poor and middle class. The only thing the GOP wants is the poor and middle class vote. What have they done lately ? They have learned a new word...No ! That is why we don't need another Bush regime. I am tired of being ignored by the rich politicans! They don't get it, we are the working poor and there are more of us than the rich. We will seen next November who is right and who is wrong.

I previously advised friends and familty that "We survived the Carter presidency, we can survive this Obama presidency." I am no longer sure.

In the Party of the blinds, one-eyed jack is the king. The joke of the century for Republican Party. Any other Party would have disbanded and started afresh with a new one than to have one eyed Jack as the best person to run the race. What a shame isn't it?

I kind of feel sorry for Perry, he has to shake off what Bush did, because of the simularities. (republican, christian,Texas) War monger??? It didn't take a war to get Osama! If you look deep at why other people hate us, It is most likley something we did. America needs to pull it's big nose in and qwit worring about what other contries are doing and start taking care of ourselves. Let the other Countries take care of themselves. I gaurentee alot more people would be alive.
