Two 16-year-old boys were charged Wednesday in the broad daylight shooting of a 1-year-old girl who remains hospitalized.

The baby was with her 15-year-old aunt walking the family dog near 84th Street and Muskegon Avenue Tuesday morning when Gary Moore and Fredrick Dean allegedly began firing shots at a man they believed to be a rival gang member, NBC Chicago reports.

The baby's aunt got on the ground and tried shielding the child, but once the gunfire stopped she discovered the baby “had visible trauma” to her head, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Moore and Dean were charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm, the Chicago Tribune reports. The man they were firing at -- a 27-year-old man on a bicycle at the time -- told police he was not in a gang, but the investigation is ongoing.

The baby underwent surgery Tuesday at Children's Memorial Hospital, and remains in "guarded" condition Thursday, according to NBC Chicago. Neighbors told reporters gunfire is common in the area, and gangs are a problem there.

Another resident was walking her 5-year-old son to school when the gunfire started Tuesday, according to the Tribune.

"Now he's saying he doesn't even want to go back to school," she told the paper. "He's scared, he's afraid. He hears shots everyday, but he was never in the crossfire until today, going to school."

Dean and Moore, both juveniles, have a bond hearing scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
