Martin Bashir Rails Against Bachmann, Perry's Use Of Religion In Their Campaign (VIDEO)

WATCH: Bashir Bashes Bachmann On Religion

Martin Bashir bashed the GOP candidates for invoking religion in their campaigns on his Wednesday show.

He accused Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry of mixing religion and politics in their campaigns. Bashir noted that both candidates' speeches have been "laced with the conviction that they prayed and God led them to run for the presidency."

He dismissed their attempts to convey "that their candidacy was divinely inspired, adding, "It would be much more sensible for each of these candidates to stop invoking God's name for the purpose of their political campaigns and instead to offer up the world's best known prayer: 'Thy will be done on Earth as it is in heaven.'"

Bashir made a striking analogy to get his point across. He compared Bachmann and Perry to none other than the dueling sides of the Civil War.

Bashir noted that both sides of the Civil War had claimed that God was on their side, and dug out a quote from Abraham Lincoln, who had rejected that claim saying, "In the present Civil War, it is quite possible that God's purpose is different from the purpose of either party."

"How perfect was President Lincoln's insight?" Bashir mused.
