In the new issue of People magazine, on stands Friday, Rose McGowan speaks openly for the first time about her shocking past. Born in Italy and raised in a commune, McGowan says she was part of the "Children of God" sect that promoted polygamy and sex at an early age, and also banned newspapers and televisions to keep the members in the dark about world events.

The father fled with McGowan and her siblings after he suspected that the future actress might have been sexually abused. McGowan says she remembers running through a cornfield through thunder and lightening in order to escape the premises. She later went on to live on the streets as a runaway, when, at the age of 13, she was taken in by drag queens in Portland, Oregon.
