This show like Project Runway makes a joke of art. It serves to essentially give something to eat popcorn to. It's nice that SJP found something to make money with where her face isn't required, but this show has nothing to do with art, other than a gimmick for a show.

I'd be more impressed if Ms Parker were a patron of an artist or an institution, but she's here to make buck. I may not care for certain expressions of "art" but this show is vulgar.

Oooooh I can't wait. Love it. Watching the people I went to college with (figuratively) do their thing in such a forum is super fun. If only they had a reality show about actors...

Why are people so negative about this show? obvisously people watch it and like it. The contestants are just creating art, they're not murdering people, I don't think their is a need for harsh words in the art world, unless the art is truly offensive. Artists just want to put out inspiring work, and even if their work is not pleasing to you, you should appreciate their intentions. Personally I don't like most of the art on the show, but I'm not going to be mean about it. I just can't believe there is a reality show about painting!

I kind hated first,
but was because I couldn't make to the auditions
I oversees for an autistic young man, and the very day of the auditions
I had a previous engadgement to be with him all day.
So, I got over and I follow the "reality" I think was fun and very dramatic
There's a lot of beautiful things that come out through the whole process.
And people always will say things nasty if they don't like something
When I don't like something, I switch or turn off or go to my meditation state of mind
and try to filter what's is good. Because there's so much trash( and there's people just feeding in trash) our surroundings is so chaotic.
So called Offensive art could be an wake up call sometimes, not all the time. Artists somehow are parabolic of what should be said, even if is through something without words.

I agree that some art can be intentionally offensive to point out a moral issue or something like that, but sometimes art can just be offensive or something sinister can be disguised as "art". That's probably why you wrote "not all the time".

I am so glad this show is coming back. I know many will pan it, like they did season one, but come people....I, for one, think it's great to have shows about The Arts! Yes, the reality show-ness of it and the fast pace of the "challenges" are not for most artists, but let's not let that stand in the way of the value of giving art exposure.

The Art World is like Science. It declares itself the high judge and executioner. The authorities are those that says Good Art is what the Art World calls good art.

Who are these Punishers? What have they given of their life to make life a better place to be. Pathetic "short people"playing sadist with 'hungry ghost' artists.

Oh yeah, it's effective all right if you consider raping artists of every last shred of hope in striving for inner authenticity. It takes years and years.

Get this show out of my sight and off the air.

They are completely ignorant of space-war tactics.

No, it's nothing like science. Art is subjective, i.e, it's in the eye of the beholder. Science is objective. Science is based on fact, on peer reviewed research and on empirical evidence.

I watched the show and participated in tons of commentary on the culture vulture page and Jerry Saltz's facebook page and now for the life of me, I can't even remember who won. What does that say about the "great artist" idea? Well, we know that's a joke actually; that's the stuff of reality shows! An artist's life work is generally made over time measured in years, not "a season" (especially when the season is a TV season).
well, I'll probably watch again -- it's the only reality show I have watched; I couldn't help myself last season!

With all the tears in the preview, it seems the emphasis in "Work of Art" will be on melodrama, not art.
12:25 PM on 08/27/2011
people remember just what's is relevant to them.
Abdi was the winner, he got a solo at Brooklyn Museum
I will watch too.
I think there's something about the process of everyone involved that's catch my atention

But hey, who cares about any of that. Let's just run with it, because the ratings are there and most people won't even think that much about it, and at least the show will educate the public somewhat about contemporary art, and..., and...

I hope a group of artists begin making art that ridicules this show and the pretentious notion that it in any way can be capable of fostering the next generation, movement, era, etc. of great artists. Would Duchamp have won? Van Gogh? Hirst? Warhol? Martin Creed? Chris Burden? Should we even think of art as winning? Maybe I'm just a pessimist in this sense, but I often feel that art competitions are a cancer upon the world of art due to the art world smoking to many metaphorical capitalist/commercial cigarettes.
11:40 AM on 08/28/2011
Van Gogh would win, but we wouldn't know it until long after he was dead.

Ross King tells in his book "The Judgement of Paris" that when the Impressionists were starting to show their work and be ridiculed, the highest-paid artist was Meissonier. Yet today few people have heard of him. To determine the "winners" in art, one must have a very long viewpoint.
11:16 AM on 08/26/2011
Now I know the art market, especially of the Western world of art, has existed for quite awhile now, and has grown to encompass art from all around the world. It has become an establishment of the art world that has helped develop this notion of "Insider Art," where one must be knowledgeable of the various works, themes, movements, trends, etc., of contemporary art to understand much of that contemporary art. This is perfectly fine, but is also a product of the system.
However, my opinion is that it is a system where originality, integrity, personal expression, or any other highly subjective aspects of making art either become impossible, or extremely difficult to maintain, and are usually overwhelmed by the competitive, economic factors of the market. This isn't to say that one cannot still create profound, stunning, beautiful, moving, and/or important works of art as a part of this system. It's just much more difficult not to get caught up in one's own hype and mythology, and risk becoming a caricature of your previous self, suddenly creating lack-luster, or unintentionally superficial, sub par work.

As we move into the 21st century and realize more and more how connected we are to the rest of the world, and how that connectivity allows for a wealth of marketing information, it's not surprising that businesses are trying their best to figure out ways to sell us almost everything under the sun. However, some things lose their luster when they become too embedded in the world of commercialism.
11:32 AM on 08/26/2011
With Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons and Thomas Kinkade commercialism outweighs the art.

you couldn't pay me to put a Kincade (ow that hut just to type it) in my home. Koons was at least humorous and I don't know anyone who doesn't connect to it in some way.
