What We're Trying Now: Modern Mauve

Clockwise from left: Marni & Fendi FW2011 - Luca Cannonieri/, NARS, YSL, Bobbi Brown, NARS, Clinique

The shade mauve can (at times) veer slightly... grandmotherly, but this fall it got a serious update when Marni and Fendi sent their models down the runways with full-on, berry-tinged makeup. (With a color palette this soft, you can wear the same shade all over -- eyes, lips, cheeks-- and it actually works.) The subtle purple undertones is what gives this look a decidedly more modern feel.

For a mauvey-smokey eye: Use your finger to line both the upper and lower lids with shadow, extending up towards the crease of the eye. (The impreciseness is what makes this so appealing.) Dust cheeks with a multi-colored, illuminating blush, and finish with a swipe of sheer, plum-colored lip balm. To build intensity, layer on as needed; since all the colors complement each other, you really can't go wrong.
