Super Committee Corporate Donors Have Clear Lobbying Interests At Stake

WASHINGTON -- A new report by the Sunlight Foundation, a money in politics watchdog group, reveals that members of the newly formed Joint Select Committee on Debt Reduction are no strangers to high-dollar corporate lobbying.

As part of a series exploring lobbying influence on members of the super committee, the report details the key lobbying priorities of the top corporate donors to three committee members, Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas), Rep. Dave Camp (R-Mich.) and Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.), in an effort to predict how those donors' lobbying interests may affect the deficit reduction process.

"I think it's just something to keep in mind when you look at the committee and the decisions that they're making," said the Sunlight Foundation's Bill Allison. "They're not going to be coming to this entirely with a platonic detachment and trying to come up with a rational solution. They're going to be thinking in terms of balancing competing interest groups."

Though these corporate donations were registered before the formation of the super committee, their impact on the deficit-reducing decisions made by the committee members could certainly be felt.

Hensarling, one of the committee's co-chairs, lists Bank of America, KPMG and the American Bankers Association among his top donors, all of which have lobbied strongly against increased taxes on the banking industry.

Upton has taken campaign donations from Ford Motor Co., which, according the Sunlight Foundation report, has lobbied for legislation "that would permanently extend the tax code provision that allows corporations to avoid U.S. taxes on their foreign earnings, provided they keep those funds overseas."

Camp has likewise received campaign funds from corporations seeking relief from tax and health care costs, including Dow Chemical, which has sought "a permanent extension and expansion of the research and development tax credit," estimated to cost the Treasury $10.7 billion between 2010 and 2014.

The report concedes that even the billions in tax breaks these and other corporations seek to protect may not mean much in the grand scheme of deficit reduction.

Yet that does nothing to reduce the impact corporate donors may have on deficit reduction plans, the Sunlight Foundation contends. In the report, Allison wrote, "What becomes clear from reading the lobbying reports, then looking at the donors' annual reports, press releases, congressional testimony and other information is how much effort is put into defending sums of money that wouldn't make a dent in the total size of the debt."

Actually much of the worst things Congress does has been done in "Super Committee."

Except it is called Conference Committees.

That is where the Senate and House get together to reconcile the different versions of their bill. And a committee of as few as 6 people can oinsert nasty, pork barrel legislation into the bill. often in the middle of the night. In secret.

The lobbying consortium in this country is so powerful that they have been able to eliminate what use to be called a bribe and replaced it with the term donation. Based on this revised definition, a political donation appears to be nothing more than a bribe that has been decriminalized.

Bribery: a form of corruption, is an act implying money or gift given that alters the behavior of the recipient. Bribery constitutes a crime that is the offering, giving, receiving, or soliciting of any item of value to influence the actions of an official or other person in charge of a public or legal duty.

When a corporation has the right to vote I will be interested in their opinion on the legisltative process. For now they only have the right to buy a politician. I don't see where they have a legitimate complaint as to how the politician is performing since they cant' vote for him/her/it.

It makes no difference. Both parties agreed on the cuts they wanted - but didn't want to have to vote for - and made them the "automatic triggers" that will occur once the SC goes gridlock.

What about the other 9 members of this Super Committee? The other 3 Republicans and the 6 Democrats? To what corporations are they beholden? Who gives them the big bucks?

We all know that each and every politicians takes bribes - 'scuse me, donations - so why not a little more balance in this article?

greedy corporations, including ford motor company, have bankrolled the gop. in return they expect /demand special legislation for their interest only. ford has donated heavily-has lobbied for legislation that would "permantely" extend the tax code provision that allows corporations to avoid u.s. taxes on foreign earnings provided they keep the funds overseas....now, is it any wonder why iconic american companies are making their products in foreign countries? is it any wonder why, 2.6million jobs were lost during the bush era? is it any wonder why hundreds and hundreds of thousands of american jobs were outsourced? is it any wonder why american factories are closing, the unemployment lines are getting longer, and many americans are destitude? i own a ford, but now, i'm getting rid of it. turns out the american brand was manufactured in mexico. and now, ford wants to be tax exempt from paying american taxes? it cost me american dollars to purchase the car. the greedy corporations lobbying for this legislation to keep foreign built products exempt from american taxes only will result in more jobs outsourced, and even longer unemployment lines, and then the repubs will point their fingers. we must vote out the repub controlled congress, and keep them out!say NO to the repubs and teapubs!

"Super Committee Corporate Donors Have Clear Lobbying Interests At Stake"

This was clear the same day that the Super Committee was conceived. And this should be reported every time: The corporate donors interests, clash with the American public's interest. The American public, the ones that these politicians falsely purport to represent.

The pretense that these politicians represent the people is a lie. The money they accept from the corporate interests is a foul. And the whole deceptive business is treacherous. It has been going on for so long and intensifying year by year. I sometimes have to relent my outrage and admit that we the public deserve this as a reward for our apathy. Congratulations.

"Corporate Donors Take Aim At Super Congress" Gee, do you think they can be bought? How convenient for them, though. "One stop shopping". Obama has secured his place in history. "The Great Emancipator"; "The Great Communicator"; and now"The Great Facilitator". The very genius of Neo Liberal politics!

The corporations are already jockeying for control of this group. Business as usual in Washington D.C. This group will be bought and paid for before they even address a single issue.

Amazing how no one in Washington or even here demands a reform of the system. We need an amendment to the Constitution creating public funding of elections and limiting the amount of time of campaigns. However, our politicians, lobbies, corporations and media benefit by the present corrupt system and that is the base of our problems. We are a dying nation and still do not see it...the rich know what they are doing and do it easily....
