The Red Cross is preparing dozens of shelters along the East Coast and distributing supplies to areas in the storm's path.
People can find open Red Cross shelters by viewing an interactive Google map. You can donate to the the Red Cross relief efforts by calling 1-800-RED CROSS, texting the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation, sending contributions to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013 or donating online.

The Red Cross is looking for 1,000 volunteers to help in New York City during the storm and its aftermath. Jordan Humphrey of the Red Cross tells The Village Voice it's looking for anyone who's been through Red Cross reserve training, as well as Red Cross-trained EMTs, mental health professionals, and nursing professionals.

The Salvation Army is ready to provide food, drinks, spiritual and emotional care to emergency responders and survivors between the Carolinas and New England. The Salvation Army has already set up 30 mobile canteens in the Carolinas, which are able to provide in excess of 45,000 meals. An Incident Command Team has been established in Charlotte, NC and will deploy to the Carolina coast once the storm passes, according to the organization's website. To contribute to the Salvation Army's relief efforts, text "STORM" to 80888 to make a one-time $10 donation or contribute online.

Network For Good, an online hub of charities, nonprofits and volunteers, has a list of organizations offering relief.

Operation USA seeks to fill gaps in community health care and social services efforts after disasters. Text "aid" to 50555 or visit the donation page online.

Direct Relief has pre-positioned Hurricane Prep Packs in eight states throughout the Gulf Coast. Each pack contains medicine, items to treat patients with injuries and other medical supplies. The organization is accepting donations online.

When disaster strikes, Feed the Children rolls out its fleet of semi-tractor trailers stocked with the critical supplies, including diapers, baby products, bottled water, cleanup supplies, snacks to be used in the days and weeks of critical recovery time. To help Feed the Children help those in need, consider making an online donation.

AmeriCares is accepting donations to provide emergency medicines and supplies, with immediate shipment possible. The organization specializes in wound care medicines and supplies, water, and other storm-relief items.

Operation Blessing provides relief to disaster victims worldwide. The organization is accepting donations to respond with emergency food, water and other relief supplies for people impacted by Hurricane Irene.

The comments on this thread downplaying this event as "a simple rainstorm" or "a few downed trees" are clearly not informed. It is OK to be uninformed, but dangerous to speak from such a position. If you do not want to donate to help the flood victims, that's fine. But don't act like it is absurd to suggest the idea of charity. Here in Vermont, towns are cut off, roads are destroyed. People have lost homes, businesses, farms, lives. It is not the worst disaster to happen to anyone, but things are pretty bad up here right now. I know things are bad in other states as well. Perhaps you incredulous commentators simply aren't aware of how bad the damage is, and that's OK. It is easy to learn, though, if you want. Some food for though: http://www.buzzfeed.com/mjs538/incredible-pictures-of-irenes-destruction-in-verm ... If this destruction had hit where you live, you would be singing a different tune. Again, there is no obligation to donate to those who are hurting from the floods right now. But there is nothing wrong with Americans helping one another--hell, PEOPLE helping one another. Don't make this another Left v. Right bickering contest. Some of the words on this thread are just so selfish, from such a narrow perspective, that it makes me sad for our country. Some day, you may be in need. Remember that empathy is a sign of strength and intelligence.

I just for the life of me can't understand why there is a need to donate because of Irene? I live in Virginia Beach, Va. one of the first places this storm hit, while many may be without power and there was some flooding all and all this was not that big of a deal. Lets put it this way, we only had a few trees down and maybe a few homes damaged but for the most part it's not that bad. As for Sandbridge in Virginia Beach for those who lost their homes, its water front property worth millions, and trust me these people had insurance. As for Nags Head NC, most of those homes also are million dollar homes rented out for the summer and they are owned by property managed reality companies and trust me they too have insurance. If you want to donate why not donate to those from Joplin who really lost everything, because to me this compared to that was far worse. I have a feeling that whom ever put this up on this website wanting donations are doing so, so they too can pocket the money..

Because you weren't personally effected, and because other bad things have happened, nobody should donate to those hurt by Irene. As a Vermonter, I encourage you to research what is happening in my state. It is offensive for you to say that this event was "not that big of a deal". I agree that the people of Joplin should be helped, too. But it doesn't take a logician to see that helping one group in no way precludes helping the other. Following your reasoning to its conclusion, one would only ever donate to help the worst disaster ever. Why help those in Joplin when people are still hurting in Japan? Why help the Japanese victims when people are still hurting from Katrina? Why help Katrina victims when people are still hurting from the tsunami of 2004? etc. Please, don't come on here telling people NOT to help. What is wrong with you? I'm glad you personally were not effected greatly by the storm, I wish you would broaden your perspective to include your fellow Americans and humans.

After reading many of the insensitive comments here on this thread, it saddens my soul that there are such uncaring people out there concerning their fellow Americans.

It seems that some people think the storm wasn't that bad when a small amount of research will show that many people are homeless and have had their lives uprooted by this storm. Others seem to think all charities are_scams and they tell people not to donate without having any evidence to back up their words.

It is no wonder that our country is in the dire straights that it is in. This me myself and I attitude is not conducive to a well functioning society. It is selfish, pure and simple.

For those who have a heart, I highly recommend checking out this website: http://www.charitynavigator.org/ They evaluate charities and will tell you where your money will be spent and what portion goes to assistance for others and how much is spent on administration costs.

I bit of rain, a bit of wind and a bit of flooding in the areas that normally get flooded in the spring melt.

Begging for donations over this? Give me a break.
12:05 AM on 08/31/2011
Inform yourself. That description in no way does justice to the destruction this flooding has done and continues to do. People are in need, and there is nothing wrong with helping them. There is also nothing wrong with NOT helping. But being dismissive like this is just bad form. I assure you, peoples' homes and businesses, bridges and major roadways are not normally flooded in the spring melt.

we live in a begging country!!!!!!

Why somebody always asking for money!?, for what? a couple of fallen trees? i work to damn hard for my money to be giving it all away! people need to stop looking for a hand out!!!! and i guarantee you the money ain't going where it should! but fatten asses!
07:50 AM on 08/29/2011
You hit the nail on the head. First the news over played how bad the storm was. Then the scammers come out of the woodwork. Take your donation and give to some poor soul you see on the street. I did that a couple of times, and I always felt good for a long time after that.

Vermont is a federal disaster area. Do a little research. This was far more than "just a rainstorm". What may have been a minor storm in your area has royally effed up the lives of many, many people in VT, NC, NY, NJ, etc.

I've already donated with my tax dollars. It's the job of the government to help those affected by this natural disaster.

DO NOT donate. The people who need help NEVER get it. We survived IKE, no help at all (where was the help?). Don't waste your money.
