MTV VMAs 2011: Adam Levine Says 'F*ck You VMAs'

Adam Levine

Suffice to say, Adam Levine will not be attending Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles.

The outspoken Maroon 5 frontman and judge on NBC's "The Voice," took to Twitter on Saturday to air his disapproval of the network, which he believes has strayed from the original mission.

"the VMA's. one day a year when MTV pretends to still care about music. I'm drawing a line in the sand. f*ck you VMA's," Levine wrote.

It was a statement he did not regret.

"still waiting to have my 'jerry macguire mission statement moment of deep regret...' not happening. phew!" he soon wrote.

MTV tweeted back at Levine, saying, “Soooo you'll be tuning in at 9/8C tomorrow right? BTW, bonus points if you TwitPic your 2004 Moonman!”

Levine's Maroon 5 won for "This Love" that year.

The singer also recently ripped "American Idol," criticizing what he perceived as their policy on openly gay contestants.

“What’s always pissed me off about 'Idol' is wanting to mask that, for that to go unspoken,” he told Out Magazine. “C’mon. You can’t be publicly gay? At this point? On a singing competition? Give me a break. You can’t hide basic components of these people’s lives. The fact that 'The Voice' didn’t have any qualms about being completely about it is a great thing.”

I'm not a big fan of Maroon 5. They tend to have those songs that are annoyingly played over and over. At this very moment my head is singing "this love has....taken control of me". Ugh..

Adam, you are 100% correct! Thanks for saying what a lot of us have been thinking for years: MTV is no longer relevant to real music and musicians!
01:32 PM on 08/30/2011
Go Adam! MTV lost all credibility years ago. It's a joke of a network. Why do they have the VMAs?? They don't even show any music videos.

Sunday night, flipping through channels, I saw Lady Gaga or Joey Fatone or whatever she was, opted to watch Angels and Demons instead.

And Yes! After Clearchannel bought all the radio stations and apparently viacom bought mtv and vh1, music in this country has TANKED in quality and originality. One has to dig deep to find anything new of value to listen to, or go overseas.

There is plenty to listen to, you just aren't going to here it on TV or crappy radio station. Go see a real band play in a local venue. There are great bands all over America.

Good for him.
I miss rock stars that actually have balls to stand up to industry greed and BS .

Like most music today, hearing their songs played over and over and over and over on the radio is a annoying - Maroon 5 included - and it seems most labels cookie-cutter their talent to fit a certain mold. I wouldn't call Maroon 5 a rock band, it fits more into the Top 40 pop genre.

But he is right, about MTV (stopped watching years ago when they insisted on becoming nothing but a reality show channel - the raunchier the better), and about American Idol.

MTV Music Awards were horrible this year and they have been horrible for probably the last 7 years. Good bye MTV!

I agree with him. I can't remember the last time I saw anything resembling a music video on MTV.

I'm totally with Adam on this. MTV should stop calling itself 'music' television already.

I wish MTV and VH1 would play more music. But would not like to see more of that whiny Adam Levine. The Voice highligts the judges more than the contestants. And his constant bitc*** about Idol is stupid. The gay contestants on the voice have not placed further than the ones on Idol. And Idol let the contestants compete without making a big deal out of their sexuality. They came on Idol to win a contest or a career for the singing and not to make a statement to please Levine. Just because someone did not make a statement on the show did not mean that people did not know or than anyone was hiding anything. If they were out before the show they were out. Who knows, maybe the gay contestants did not have a long term partner at the time that they wanted to include in their life story. Levine needs to stop trying to tell others what to do. The gays on the Voice did not stand a chance in hel* of winning out or not. So who is he trying to fool with that foolishness. When the Voice has a gay winner then he can start his bragging. But until then it is just voyerism in the worst way.

Viacom purchased and destroyed MTV, BET & VH1! The only station they left in tact is the CMT station!

The guy's right, MTV doesn't play music and should be made to change it's name, and don't give me this other channel garbage...

it will take more than one to make a stand... glad he did, but it's likely futile.

At least he took a stand... for that I respect him. He is definitely part of the solution in my book. Go Adam!

Another ignorant hipster. Yo, Levine, MTV has an entire channel devoted to nothing but music videos, has had it for years (since '02), yet I constantly hear MTV being slagged off by ignorant people who don't even watch MTV. It's called MTV Hits, it may not be on basic cable, but most people with cable have it, it's videos 24/7 with limited commercials.
03:50 PM on 08/30/2011
Youngster, all MTV used to play was music, now it is trashy reality programming. His criticism is valid even if you can't remember far enough back to realize MTV used to be something more than it is today.

Hallelujah, tell it like it is. I sure do miss the programming they had centered around music, e.g. Headbanger's Ball, Yo! MTV Raps, Alternative Nation, & my personal fav, 120 Minutes.
