Shar-Pei Sleeping Problem Involves Gravity (VIDEO)

First Posted: 08/28/11 04:33 PM ET Updated: 10/28/11 06:12 AM ET

Ziggy the Shar-pei might be trying to take a nap on the couch, but his position of choice isn't exactly conducive to sleep. Things like gravity seem to keep getting in the way.

And we know you come to this page for the LOLs, not the life advice, but if we could give you one pro-tip today it would be this: lie down for your naps. Maybe you'll snore less.

Ahh, what a cutie!  I needed this today!  I've had dogs (rescues) that snored, but here's the story of my one snoring cat.

Brownie was soaking wet, a starving perhaps 8wk old kitten, begging outside in a rainstorm at an Elks Lodge in November.  A friend of mine found him, gave him some elks chicken and brought him right to me. He was sick as I've ever seen; his breathing was so bad he couldn't really walk. I turned my guest bath into a sauna and sat up with him, then hauled him into the vet.  Treated some injuries (probably abuse), pneumonia in all quadrants of the lungs, got antibiotics but brought him home (I didn't want him more traumatized) and back into the sauna/bath.  After two weeks and an antibiotic switch, the vet told me to put him down.  I wasn't rational:  I'd lost my mother and my wife, and I wasn't going to lose this one.

After 3 weeks and consults, the vets gave up.  I didn't.  I made a chicken stew everyday (if made properly, it has strong antibiotic qualities), put Vicks on his collar, and he stayed in the sauna, gaining weight and the fur improving.  He ended up with a bad eye, purrs like a freight train and snores like a tank; but he's healthy and fairly happy.  He's got abuse issues like OCD behavior, but we deal with it. In the past 8 years, he's been a wonderful, loving animal  He has his quirks; he begs, steals, has to figure out everything in the house (remotes, the laptop, toilets, taps, fridges, door locks) and is the most loving animal I've ever had ~ even when he drinks out of my coffee cup when I'm not looking.  I've never had an animal confound me like this one, or make me laugh; he's a keeper!

He is very cute indeed, but his nasal anatomy obviously makes it very hard to breathe. Those poor doggies with brachycephalic skulls like pugs, bulldogs and Shar-peis have a hard time breathing. My Chihuahuas have the same short-snouted skull type, although they don't have the prognathism (underbite) that some of these breeds do. My older dog snores, and when she sleeps, she does so with her head elevated on a small pillow or a folded blanket. That seems to help her with her compressed airway.

Thank you! I was going to write that the dog is trying to stay in that position so he can breathe. Poor thing. I have OSA and tracheomalacia and know how he feels.

This puppy definitely has an issue with breathing. I would suggest taking puppy to vet to check for nasal snares and an xray to determine if he has a small trachea. Good luck and prayers for your pup.

I know- I was thinking that its keeping its head elevated just so it can breath. Sounds like he needs a doggy CPAP machine.

Poor guy. He was so exhausted that he couldn't wake enough to move to a better position!
That is a 10 out of 10 on the adorable meter.
