Hurricane Irene 2011: Federal Aid Sought By Local Republicans In Disaster's Wake

The GOP’s philosophy has been to push government more towards the state and local level, but the wake of Hurricane Irene is leaving many seeking a role for the federal government.

Hurricane Irene left a path of destruction from Virginia to New England, causing what is expected to be billions of dollars in damage.

“The main purpose of government is to protect the safety of citizens,” said New Jersey Assemblyman Jon Bramnick (R). "The purpose of the federal government in some respect is they have much greater resources. I am assuming when there is a disaster somewhere in the country, we should spread the cost."

Bramnick, a close ally of Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.) and the number two Republican Assembly, said he would like to see the federal government provide assistance to the Garden State and local communities. Many of the communities in Bramnick’s northern New Jersey district, including Cranford and Westfield, have sustained flood and wind damage from Irene.

“The resources of Westfield, N.J., and their limited budget cannot compare to the state and federal governments,” Bramnick said. “The state cannot compare to the federal.”

Bramnick has long been an advocate for reigning in state-level spending -- a key concern for fellow Republican Christie. Bramnick stressed that he believes emergency management, along with public safety and the military, to be a top priority for government, particularly at the federal level.

Christie has sought preliminary federal assistance for the Garden State, which sustained flood and wind damage in most counties. In an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, Christie said he expects the final sum of New Jersey’s damage to total in the billions of dollars.

His office did not return a call for comment on whether the governor would be seeking federal funds for the hurricane, but in the past Christie has sought additional federal aid for New Jersey.

In Virginia, while Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) has also sought preliminary federal assistance for his state, and officials in his administration are saying Virginia is beginning to take steps to seek additional federal assistance.

Bob Spieldenner, a spokesman for Virginia’s emergency management agency, said that assessments are currently being done on local areas around the state to determine the cost of the damage. He said McDonnell’s office is starting to hear back from the harder-hit areas of the state and that the governor has not made a final decision on need.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) reiterated on Monday his call that additional federal assistance for natural disasters be tied to spending cuts, but not all Republicans are on board. Rep. Leonard Lance (R-N.J.) said in an interview with Patch on Saturday that he disagrees with Cantor. Lance, who has advocated fiscal restraint since his days as a state legislator, represents a district that has been severely impacted by flooding.

Mayors in communities impacted by Irene expressed opposition to Cantor’s position.

“It is completely outrageous that someone would say something like that,” said Dan Aschenbach (D), mayor of Cranford, N.J. “How does he represent his own people in Congress? Congressman Lance recognizes what the damage is.”

Mayor W. Eugene Hunt of Poquoson, Va., said he believes in the need for additional budget cuts at the federal level and told HuffPost he would like to see more federal infrastructure investment to save funds at the local level in the long-term.

“What I can tell you is tying any kind of federal aid to spending cuts overall is not necessarily an investment in infrastructure,” he said.

Saki Knafo contributed to this report.

I thought Cantor, Paul, and the Tea Party have said it is not the business of the federal government to bail out the people who suffer losses in natural disasters, and that no money shall be allocated unless other cuts are made?  Let's see how much damage was done in Cantor's area in VA and whether they appeal for FEMA and other funds.  There are a lot of Tea Party people in New Hampshire, NC and  Read More...

Republicans are asking for federal handouts for those white bedroom communities that got damaged by Irene. Republicans want to get those white people some money because those white people feel grief over property damage. Republicans will give money to white people who are suffering grief but for decades republicans have fought against improving black communities even though people in black communities have been living with grief about their slum conditions. How come the grief of white people in the Irene-damaged white communities is important but the grief of black peopel in the slums doesn't matter to the GOP?
To the GOP, white grief matters & black grief doesn't matter and I'll tell you why: it's because the GOP doesn't care about black people. Republicans don't want federal money helping to beautify the blighted slums that black people have to live in, but republicans are quick to give handouts to help upper-class white communities beautify their communites that become ugly.

Hey republicans, will any of you, or any of their white kin, be getting federal aid, or any kind, of aid, because of damage done to property by Irene? Of course! But that's OK because that handout will be going to ameliorate white suffering and white suffering is sad and it must be reduced.

Certainly the Democratic National Committee is now considering finding a viable candidate to run in Eric Cantor's district. He has stuck steadfastly to his Tea Party mantra and now that his own constituents have been adversely affected by the earthquake & Hurricane Irene, they are beginning to realize the negative impact Washington Republican policies will have on local communities.

Americans are beginning to realize with the devastating spring tornadoes, southwest fires, now the earthquakes & hurricanes, that state governments are unable to fiscally handle the disasters and must rely upon the federal government to aid in the recovery.

We need to invest in rebuilding America's infrastructure, laid bare by Hurricane Irene. We need a jobs program, but it cannot rest solely on the federal government's shoulders. The private sector must help as well, but so can individual Americans. It is now time for President Obama to address the American people & tell them that it will require a sacrifice. Wealthy people & corporations need to pay their fair share, as do regular Americans. He should consider a "REBUILD AMERICA" Savings Bond drive where regular Americans could buy & invest in the rebuilding of their communities by buying bonds. It would be a bold move, not a tax, but would generate much needed revenue.

Time to get rid of obstructionists!

"The purpose of the federal government in some respect is they have much greater resources. How can that work?? I suppose the poor get poorer is the only way it works. Sigh.

Why don't they send Cantor to NJ to tell Christie there is no money.

Former FEMA Head Agrees With Eric Cantor: No Disaster Aid Without Budget Cuts...

Ok lets see what the REP want to cut in order to help people. And i suppose it will come from those in another part of the state or other states having to chip in, huh? Funny, thought its those on the right always talking about how Dem/libs are taking from others, usually the rich to cover for things. So this is what the REP call for answer is to talk from those that have far less then the rich to fix the infrastructure?

Not a brass farthing for any bagger district. Let them eat cake. They are out to ruin America for the rest of us.

Great pithy comment. Not a brass farthing for any district represented by a Republican who voted against everything this past year. Let the true believer baggers and their friends eat cake. They are out to ruin America for the rest of us.

Now I see they are criticizing Obama for being "overly" prepared and playing the hurricane up as being bigger than it was. How much damage did the Baggers want? Did they want more Americans to "fail" or lose everything so they could point to Obama and blame him for that? It wouldn't matter if Obama died and returned as Christ in the second coming....baggers would still attack him. Never saw such ignorance in our so-called "leaders".......they are just losers...

Don't the Repugs believe in drowning the (federal) government in a bathtub?

How about telling the Party of No that they can't have any funds?

I would LOVE to see them go nuts with rage.....

Hypocrites.....they want to shrink the size of the federal government UNTIL they need help (aka cash)....then it is hands out and whiny, nasty demands.

I am sorry to say both ends.
I am sure it is more toxic than a nuclear cloud.

Christie didn't return a reporter's phone calls for comment?!?.

He has NEVER met a media opportunity he didn't take full advantage of.

Cat got your tongue Christie?

NO federal funds for New Jersey or Virginia.

Cantor and Christie need to practice what they preach and take care of thier own problems and show us how it's done.

When they fail the good and decent people of those states can vote out these hypocrites.

Total hypocrites.
The gop and their supporters should live what they preach and no federal funds should be used to help out the states that voted them into office. Why do the rest of us have to pay for their misfortune?! Why do they want to nurse from the govt teat when they condemn everyone else who does? What they think is good for the rest of us is good for them as well. Show us how easy it is to take care of yourselves by doing it!

I wonder how many of the tea party followers where effected by hurricane Irene. I wonder if they are calling Obama a muslim now, I wonder if they are calling Obama a terriosts now. I would love to know how many in Cantor's district are affected. Cantor wants to cut monies from something else before FEMA is given any more money. Does anyone know how long that will take to cut money from some where else to help the disaster stricken. I want to see the people of Cantor's district hang him from a tree.
