Bon Iver's Justin Vernon On The VMAs: The Folk Singer Lets Off Some Steam

Bon Iver's Justin Vernon Releases Some Steam On The VMAs

Beyonce is pregnant! Aside from that, though, Bon Iver's Justin Vernon is so totally over the VMAs.

The folk singer praised Bruno Mars, Kanye and Jay Z and Adele, as well as admitting that Beyonce's pregnancy is "awesome as shit, culturally speaking," but seemed a little miffed with the institution as a whole, in a post he published to his site.

"Don't we seem dumb?" he asked, "Does a moonman mean what it did back then?" Music, he says, is the loser here.

"Why do we NEED this shit so bad? Why don't we just have MUSIC? DO music? soul? I don't know," he says.

MTV is to blame, according to him. Having seen their awkward Britney tribute, we know where he's coming from.

"You might have had a very large opportunity to stabilize your self as a global presence of culture and art about 15 years ago and you fucked the dog," he concluded. Instead, MTV is now about "the dollars." This may not come as a surprise to anyone who's tuned in to watch "Jersey Shore" recently, but Vernon isn't satisfied.

"That's fucked to me. That's the absence of spirit, glue, fabric of what makes us a person," he says.

Not that he expects you to listen: "You'll probably say to yourself, who is this ass saying shit?" he says. "But what would Bill Hicks say?" he ends, referring to the stand-up comedian famous for his takedowns of American culture.
