'Miss Bala' From Mexico Outperforms Almodovar's 'The Skin I Live In' At Cannes (VIDEO)

Despite the fact that Mexico and Spain are definitely not the same place, early buzz out of Cannes pits Spanish movie king Pedro Almodovar against a Mexican nemesis, newcomer Gerardo Naranjo (They both speak Spanish! Same.)

Almodovar's latest, "The Skin I Live In," tells the story of a single-minded doctor, played by Antonio Banderas, working toward a breakthrough in synthetic skin. The trailer suffers from too many title cards and not enough dancers in comas, but it looks Almodovary enough, with some dramatic visuals and beautiful faces.

Naranjo's "Miss Bala," on the other hand, stars the previously-unknown Stephanie Sigman in a dark thriller about a beauty queen who stumbles into the Mexican underworld. There's an absence of = title cards, a great premise, and Cannes preferred it to Almodovar's, which got mixed reviews. But there are also no bald men licking TV screens. In the battle of the Spanish-language-but-otherwise-unrelated films, we call this a stalemate. Everybody's good!
