Kevin Bascue Loses Legs After Hit By Drunk Driver, Asks Judge To Show Mercy To Debra Devoe

Victim Asks Judge To Show Mercy After Tragic DUI

How's this for forgive and forget? A Grand Junction man hit by a drunk driver and forced to endure 10 surgeries after his legs were destroyed has asked the judge to be merciful.

KMGH reports Kevin Bascue was on the sidewalk picking up trash in 2010 when a car driven by Debra Devoe hit him and left the scene. 51-year-old Devoe later pleaded guilty to vehicular assault with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, and methamphetamine use.

According to the Grand Junction Sentinel, Bascue's legs were shattered in the accident. The father of two now cannot find work and his workers' compensation will soon expire. Still, in court Monday, he said "I've sat in that [defendant's] chair before, but I started younger when I tried to change ... I just hope things will be brighter for her."

As a result of Bascue's request, prosecutors have dismissed the most serious charges. The Associated Press reports Devoe was sentenced to 12 years in prison and will be eligible for parole in six.
