I wrote Jacob Lawrence once back in college. He wrote back. One of the coolest things I own...

The artist's signature at the top left corner sort of gives it away....just a little bit.

Romare Bearden such a great artist of his time.

I saw the Bearden retrospective at the Whitney in NYC a couple years ago and loved almost every piece. Truly one of the great, lesser known artists of the 20th century and, along with Jacob Lawrence and William Johnson, one of the greatest African-American artists. I know of at least one Bearden piece that will be permanently housed in the new Crystal Bridges museum here in Arkansas: http://www.flickr.com/photos/74465517@N00/2920390158/

Lesser known? I don't know about that. If you follow American art he's a giant.

I agree. Bad choice of words. Lesser known than Pollock or de Kooning, maybe, but definitely among the giants (in general, I like his work more than the abstract expressionists).

May I suggest blocking out the very visible artist's signature in the upper left hand corner before posing the question?

Who cares? Not to be a snob but modern art is a travesty.

Ignorance in regard to lots of things is a travesty!

Yet you bothered to post here and dismiss 100 years of artist production.

Interestingly, he is not even a selection. He is FABULOUS.
You have a typo there, it is Basquiat.
Can you pronounce it? My friend and I have fought over the pronounciation for months, but I know I'm right. Bas-kee-ah
