Iraq, Afghanistan Casualty Counts Tell Tale Of Two Wars

Iraq Casualties

First Posted: 09/01/11 01:16 PM ET Updated: 11/01/11 06:12 AM ET

It's a tale of two wars: in Iraq, August became the first month to pass without a single American military casualty, while in Afghanistan, Americans endured their deadliest month yet.

The Iraq figures are likely to be a boon to the effort to bring the military mission there to a close, with Iraq security forces steadily taking over risky jobs from Americans, and the U.S. mission technically due to expire at the end of the year.

"If you had thought about a month without a death back during the surge in 2007, it would have been pretty hard to imagine because we were losing soldiers every day, dozens a week," Col. Douglas Crissman, a troop leader in southern Iraq, told the New York Times. "I think this shows how far the Iraqi security forces have come."

Meanwhile, in Afghanistan, where the American military mission is now more than 10 years old, combat operations are showing no sign of abating.

In August, 66 American troops died in violence, the bulk of them during a devastating helicopter crash on Aug. 6, which killed 30 special operations troops and eight Afghans on a high-risk raid.

The 66 deaths were the highest count for that war since July 2010, when 65 Americans were killed.

Nora Bensahel, a military strategist with the Center for a New American Security, said the numbers may not mean as much as they seem.

"In Afghanistan, the number of people killed overall was very high, but that doesn't say much about number of attacks -- half of those [killed] were from a single incident -- a particularly devastating one," Bensahel told The Huffington Post, referring to the Aug. 6 crash.

"In Iraq, the fact is U.S. troops have not been engaging in combat-related operations for months, and the casualties that have occurred have largely been standoff attacks at U.S. bases rather than U.S. personnel on patrols," she continued. "It's more indicative of the missions we're conducting: the main missions U.S. forces are conducting now are about closing bases and withdrawing U.S. forces."

Monthly American casualties in Iraq have largely been in the single digits for several years now, but the war there has not been without perils: last July, 14 American servicemen died amid fighting there.

Indeed, as Reuters noted, it has still been a deadly time in Iraq -- especially for Iraqis -- since President Obama formally declared the end to combat operations exactly one year ago.

In the past 12 months, 35 American military personnel have been killed in violence there, along with an estimated 2,600 Iraqi civilians and police officers.

Obama has pledged to formally end the American military presence in Iraq by the end of this year, but for the past several months the Administration has been involved in discussions with the Iraq government about extending the mission.

And Dick Cheney tells the tale of his war, with the Iraqis throwing roses at the feet of our troops while singing "God Bless America".

It is sad that the American public is not being made aware of the true numbers of American citizens that are being killed and injured in these two countries. Civilian Government contractors who are in these countries doing jobs that were traditionally Military jobs are being killed, and injured in higher numbers that our military troops. These civilians are hired via government contract to support and assist our military. These deaths and injures, and the cost of these goverment contractors are not reflected in these statistics, and are being hidden from the American public. So Americans do not know the true finacial, and loss of life statistics. It is an outrage, and I am shocked that the media has not picked up on this, and started reporting the true statistics!!!

I agree. Discusting for the USA to use mercenary soldiers. We should end this Bush policy. If we are going to go to war we should at least be honest about it.

10 years in Iraq which we had no honest reason to go to war with.
3 years of military involvement was all it took for the USA in World War 2

Iraq was a mismanaged lie right from the start but a lot of people profited from it.
We had a small millitary industrial complex prior to ww2 but we had a huge industrial base. Now all we make is weapons while China and other nations have all the peaceful industries.
The USA needs to bring our industry home an reduce spending on the miltary industrial complex.

Cut and run?
I think he has been responsible in his approach.

We are mostly out of Iraq and we cut the head off the alquaeda snake in Afganistan. Now are winding it down.

You forgot all the Bush excuses for the war?
He made up a new reason every week. As one lie after another was exposed.

Since Afghanistan was mentioned, it reminded me of my own political aspirations, so here goes. Since football season is upon us and in the spirit of HOPE and CHANGE, I suggest the following:

Our people (Americans) and their people (Russians) huddle-up and exchange war winning advice as it pertains to Afghanistan. This will be the shortest huddle ever huddled! Since there is no winning game plan, our guys get back on the bus and come home. End of Middle East football season! Russians, when sad memories subside, go back to selling, instead of using, nuclear submarines to countries with beach front property.

OK, now for the icing on the cake! With the money and lives, we save we can afford to:
1. Defend America from with-in
2. Build a weaponized border wall between Mexico and the US manned by formerly deployed armed forces personnel
3. Start replenishing our national coffers and reduce the deficit with funds formerly ear marked for our Middle East war efforts.
4. America's black eye begins to heal and the economy makes a resounding comeback
5. Create needed jobs!

Do I get your vote?

The HuffPost censors carefully screens the post on AOL so that only the views they support reach all the sheep in the Heartland. In this way they effectively control all the information the people receive. This makes it much easier for the Quislings in Washington to manage the sheep. Any controversial ideas or views that are contrary to this Oligarchies policy are simply not posted. This violates the First Amendment of the Constitution and the principal of free speech. When the American people finally regain control of their Government one can only hope there will be a reckoning.

The moderators that know the policy of AOL is to censor the post to achieve their agenda's and to benefit a foreign government have a responsibility as patriotic American's to report such activities. For this violates the first tenet of a Democracy free speech which is guaranteed under the First Amendment.

pledged to end mission by yeares end, but negotiating to keep troops there. same as afghanistan. pledged to start a draw down, but noy reports say we will have troops there til 2016 or later.

We need to totally withdraw from Iraq. In Afghanistan a smaller force focused on terrorists and not nation building would be cheaper and more effective. Joe Biden was 100% correct years ago when he argued for such a policy.

I think BHO said something about troop withdrawals during his ill-fated (for our country) presidential campaign in 2008. Now he's recycling campaign lies? Man O' Man, this is one Muslim with a lot of CHUTZPAH!
07:24 AM on 09/02/2011
Hey sky didn't you used to be mad that Obama spent 20 years attending the United Church of Christ? A muslim would not listen to Rev. Wright.
If you don't like the guy, than that is your opinion, but don't lie about him to make a point.

Hey Ghostie - Do you consider the United Church of Christ a legitimate Christian organization spreading the word of God or is it a hate mongering, anti-white, radically racial, highly inflammatory organization that is the antithesis of Christian teachings?

From what I have read, the latter is a more accurate description of BHO "former" place of worship. Their hate rhetoric is very reminiscent of radical Islamic beliefs!

I don't think I lied... However, you have a right to your opinion. By the way, what really makes me mad is that BHO has spent three years in the White House.

It would have been interesting to see the actual combat casualty total of both wars so we could compare them as the title suggests. Just poor journalism.

The Obama administration's conduct of the war in Afghanistan has led to twice as many Americans being killed there in 2/12 years than in the previous 8 years combined (over 1100). Since Obama's been in charge, soldiers now have to walk beside vehicles instead of inside them to present a friendly image to the natives. This has led to a large increase in deaths and severer injuries to our troops from stepping on homemade IEDs. Afghanistan is proving again to be the graveyard of empires. We went there to get Bin Laden only to find him being sheltered in Pakistan by our so-called friend. Continuing to remain in Afghanistan is a waste of American lives and money. It's past time to pull out of there and leave the Afghanis to their tribal infighting that's been going on for centuries.
