Samsung's Galaxy Note Is The Biggest Smartphone On The Market (PHOTOS) (UPDATE)

With Samsung's Galaxy Note, prepare to brag: "That's not a smartphone. THIS is a smartphone."

At the IFA technology extravaganza in Berlin, Samsung unveiled its Galaxy Note, a phone with a whopping 5.3'' HD Super AMOLED display that Samsung says is "the largest screen size with smartphone portability." The iPhone 4's display screen is also smaller than the Note's at 3.5 inches, but then, if Samsung is correct, all smartphones' display screens are smaller than the Note's.

The Note will also come with a stylus (remember those?) called the "S Pen." Samsung boasts it will "introduce a new type of user experience" and allow Note owners to "freely capture and create ideas on the go." Though a stylus may not necessarily be a "new type of user experience," the fact that Samsung has included apps specially designed with the pen in mind is nice: The S Pen "has been deeply integrated into the GALAXY Note’s native applications," including the ability to send doodles and hand-drawn notes via text and email. (Samsung has made a neat infographic highlighting the utility of the S Pen which you can view here.)

Besides the old-school built-in stylus, the Note has a 1.4 gHz dual-core processor, the toned-down Android Gingerbread 2.3 operating system and both a rear camera (8 megapixels) and front-facing camera (2 megapixels). Compare all of this with the iPhone 4's specs: A 1.0 gHz single coreprocessor, iOS 4 (for now) and a rear and front facing camera boasting 5 megapixel and less-than-a-megapixel VGA hardware, respectively.

Samsung has also announced a new, small tablet called the Galaxy Tab 7.7. Samsung is billing it as the world's first tablet to feature the Super AMOLED Plus display, but the real difference-maker here is the size: A bit bigger than the hold-with-one-hand Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0, the Tab 7.7 weighs 12 ounces and is 7.7 inches by 5.2 inches by 7.9 mm. It will apparently fill that void for tablet shoppers who found the screen size of the Tab 7.0 too tiny and the Tab 10.1 too large. There's no comparison with the iPad here: The Galaxy Tab 7.7 is a different, smaller class of tablet, one intended to fit in (your perhaps very large) pocket.

The Tab 7.7 runs Android Honeycomb 3.2, has a 1.4 Ghz dual-core processor and will be available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models. Depending on price, the Galaxy Tab looks like a solid, speedy choice for shoppers looking for something smaller than an iPad (and maybe Apple won't try to block the sale of this tablet).

Samsung has not announced a price or release date for either the Note or the Tab 7.7, but we'll keep you updated as we get more information.

UPDATE: Don't get too excited, U.S. customers. A Samsung spokesperson at the IFA delivered some disappointing news to GottaBeMobile, regarding the Samsung Galaxy Note and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7.

"According to Samsung, there are currently no plans to ship either of the devices in the U.S," GottaBeMoible reported on September 1.

I can't wait for this device to be released in the states! I'm converting from IOS to Android because of the numerous restrictions in IOS and there couldn't be a better device to adopt a new OS. Now I won't have to use my wife's iPad to surf the web! As for the size, I don't know anyone who actually puts a phone to their ear anymore. My car is wired with bluetooth as well as most others today. Finally, there's a device that combines work and play with a screen size and resolution surpasses the iPhone (FYI - Retina display was developed and implemented by Samsung for Apple). Just like they've done with televisions, with the introduction of the Galaxy S II, Galaxy Tab, and now the Galaxy Note, Samsung is gunning to be the #1 consumer electronics company in the world!

Samsung expects people to carry this mini tablet in their pocket? Or even worse, in a fanny pack type of holster attached to your belt? I mean the nerve...

Apple Newton + Apple iPhone = Samsung's "one NOTE wonder wannabe Apple so badly wanting to get some traction within the Tablet market that we will desperately try anything to see if it sticks to the wall" latest gizmo.

LAME.

Looks like a bust. What happened to the notion that a cell PHONE implies that it's a portable audio communication device? Sturdy, easy to carry and good voice quality are now secondary?. Beam me up Scotty!!!!.

They had such a device on "Earth Final Conflict" and Polymer Vision has been working on a smart phone that looks remarkably like the EFC com device. Roddenberry was ahead of his time - first the flip phone and now this.

The you don't have to buy it (until Jobs tells you to.)

But I guess that's what is irking so many fanbois, the fact that there is the choice ... if this were a new Apple product you can bet that all other versions of small iPhones would be now considered (if not in actuality made so by Apple by coming up with new propitiatory cables, interfaces, for all future Apple accessories) obsolete ... and fanbois would call this "innovation".

I think I am in love.

Sadly, word on the street is that neither product will be available in the US (kinda like the Galaxy S II).

Thanks Apple (sarcasm)....

One Question: if Apple is SO great, why are they resorting to cheap courtroom antics to keep Samsung smartphone out of US markets?

The answer if right there in your question ... "if Apple is SO great" .... emphasis on the "if".

Why don't they call it a mini tablet?
still awesome

Considering the close ties between Apple and Samsung, I wouldn't be TOO surprised if the new iPhone resembled this phone or vice versa. Maybe the new iphone will be about this size.

I have a Galaxy (no stylus) and I think it's a great product. It's no ipad killer though.
