If you listened to the radio during 1992 there's a chance you know the Smashing Pumpkins song "Drown" already. But you've probably never heard it like this before.
To kick off the Smashing Pumpkins Record Club (SPRC), a club for fans that will give out lots of free rare tracks in exchange for your email address, the band has released an 8-track demo version of "Drown."
Billy Corgan introduces the track, and the club, in a brief video that runs after you sign up to download the track. According to Corgan, there are "some minor differences" between the album track (which first appeared on the soundtrack for Cameron Crowe's movie "Singles") and the demo.
"It's kind of exciting because you do get a sense of what the band sounded like unfiltered, playing the song live," he says, calling "Drown," "one of my favorite songs that I've ever written."
The demo was recorded in downtown Chicago, along with another four or five songs that will also be released through SPRC. All you have to do to get it is head over to the Smashing Pumpkins website and enter your email address.
Or, Corgan notes at the end, "You can get the song for free with technology -- I don't know. I don't understand. That's for someone else to figure out. I just write the songs."
