Google+ Adds 'Suggested Users List' (PICTURES)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 09/03/11 04:35 PM ET   Updated: 11/03/11 06:12 AM ET

Google+ has rolled out a new feature that lists well-known Google+ users that you can add to your profile's personal circles. O'Reilly Media's Alexander Howard pointed to the new suggestion feature in a Friday night post on Google+.

This "Suggested Users List" takes cues from Twitter's "Who To Follow" feature. Users can browse celebrities, journalists, and more personalities featured on Google's general "Picks" list. Users can also sort through categories like Entertainment, Fun and Interesting, Photography and Art, Technology and others. Within these lists, you'll find celebrities like Paris Hilton and Ashton Kutcher, as well as entrepreneurs like Richard Branson and journalists such as MG Siegler.

The Huffington Post's Craig Kanalley has posted a list (with links) of all the Google+ profiles from the Suggested Users List.

"[This feature will] alienate people and lead to an inevitable followers war that can hurt the health of the social network and inflate people's egos," Kanalley wrote worriedly of the lists. "As the famous get more followers, the non-featured fall farther behind, and a giant gap is created between the two. This is what happened on Twitter. (In a perfect world, all interact together, around common interests, and there aren't such huge disparities.)"

However, Google+ VP of Product Bradley Horowitz responded to Kanalley's concerns and said that the feature will soon expand to include many more categories and kind of Google+ profiles. Horowitz, went on to explain how the lists will be maintained in the future:

In order to retain a position on the list, a user will need to continue creating compelling content. But we should probably allow for folks to take an occasional vacation without concern about their rank dropping [...] No one gets on the list "automatically." But again, in the early days, we do want to make it easy for users to connect with people they might find compelling. If they prove not to be, justice will be served, and all will be right in the world.

And, wrote Horowitz, personalized lists will be coming soon, too:

At first personalization will be "lite" - users in different regions and languages will get different recommendations. [...] [W]e intend to allow people to deeply personalize and connect with like-minded people that create great content around almost any topic they care about. Just as Google Search helps connect you to web pages about almost anything, Google+ should help connect you to people who deliver content you'll find interesting - on any subject. Stay tuned!

Take a look at a sample of suggested Google+ users from each category on the Suggested Users List (below). If you have a Google+ profile, you can get started with your own list (here). If I wanted to follow a celeb on Google+, wouldn't I ALREADY be doing it?

Suggested lists bother me incredibly.

Google+ who?

Why are stars allowed to have accounts that are obviously not them? I thought Google was shutting people down for using different names. The posts are all third person, hence it's not that person. Seems a bit unfair to me.

The worship of celebrities must be made easier. Look how difficult it is right now.

I really love Google, but I will pass on this new feature, I really do not care what Celebrities have to say, or who I am supposed to like in general.

Google will be just like the auction sites that came after Ebay. Remember those?

The pathetic sheep will continue to follow the chosen "icon\flavor of the moment," whether the content's compelling or inane. And it usually is the latter anyway. We've seen the stuff Sheen spewed out. How compelling was that? Yet millions followed.

I don't see this amounting to anything more than a nuisance to Google+ users.

Twitter bothers enough people with the "Who to Follow"

I'll make that decision myself, thanks...

I love Google Products and Google+ is a really good product. I am a computer professional and nearly 100% of my friends on Google+ are also computer professionals. I sent invites to my teenage daughters and they thought it was cool but none of their friends are on it so they dont bother to check in anymore. Most of my "friends" on facebook are just users of computers and to them facebook is more or less 95% of the internet. Unless Google finds an ingenius way of making all the teenagers get on, I don't see it being more than GeekFace. Also, I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to send a private message to a friend from Google+ - Had to use Gmail.

You just post it up there, and share it only with them.

This would be news if anyone could actually get on Google+. I'm afraid that the buzz has worn off and folks who were once interested in it (myself included) have forgotten about it.

In the meantime, Facebook is rapidly playing catch-up with Google features and I fear that by the time Google can actually add users we will all react with a collective "meh".

Michael,

Thanks for that, but your link only emphasizes my point. Google cannot accomodate the invitatons.

"Already invited? We've temporarily exceeded our capacity. Please try again soon."

In today's fickle, instant technology world it only takes getting that message once or twice to cause folks to forget about it. And while all thats happening, Facebook, Twitter, Foursguare, etc. are speeding development on their own versions of Google+'s perceived advantages. The new Facebook sharing privacy options are only the first step.

If they wait much longer, Google+ will be completely irrelevant.

I like google the way it was. But again, everything has to change.

Brush your teeth and drink some tea with milk in it. You may want to consult a physician for acid reflux issues. I hope you are not single.

Google+ is in closed beta testing. I havent received an invitation, so how can I show any interest in their new features or meddling, whatever it actually is?

Perhaps they are messing up keeping things so small. My kingdom for an invitation!

No invites get anyone in right now as they are at max for their current alloted servers fr testing. Those invite links will just tell you they have exceeded limits for now and you can add your email for updates on openings when they happen.
