11 Areas Of Dissatisfaction In The U.S. Workplace: Gallup

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 09/06/11 07:28 PM ET   Updated: 11/06/11 05:12 AM ET

Of all the aspects of the workplace, it's with health insurance benefits that satisfaction is most quickly dropping, according to a recent survey from Gallup.

Asked which aspects of their jobs they like most and least, 30 percent of those surveyed said they were dissatisfied with employer health care benefits. That's up from 19 percent just three years ago, the largest percent increase of any of Gallup's 13 job-satisfaction indicators.

Most of those polled appeared to be more or less satisfied with the conditions of their respective work places -- who they work with, the work required of them and their bosses. People are less content with what they receive in compensation, however. Of those polled, 28 percent expressed dissatisfaction with retirement benefits offered by their employers and 26 percent with their chances of receiving a promotion, for example.

Overall, general employee job satisfaction is down to 83 percent, compared to 90 percent before the recession, and it's the unemployment crisis that is said to be the primary culprit, according to Gallup. Now with many more workers available than jobs, employees put up with less favorable conditions for fear of not finding another job, while companies continue to cut costs.

In this way, job security has also suffered. The same poll found that 30 percent of workers feared being laid off in the near future, close an all-time high. The concern would seem at least partially justified, as the poll took place less than a month after it was reported that layoffs had surged to a 16-month high. Indeed, while current unemployment rate stands at 9.1 percent, a much larger percentage than that is suffering. It was recently reported that 16.2 percent of working age Americans are jobless, underemployed or have dropped out of the work force after giving up hope of finding employment.

Here are the ten areas with the most worker dissatisfaction, according to Gallup:

A wise man once said that if you wouldn't do your job for free quit. Put another way, if you do what you love you won't work a day in your life.

ONE thing not mentioned its the growing demands of working off the clock. Making you take an hour to 90 minutes of lunch, you have to clock out but cant leave the business because they MIGHT need you rule that is rampant in places like Dollar General, Dollar Tree and others. They also add to this evil practice by working you overtime one day but then making you just log out more for the next day's lunch, you may be sitting there for 2-3 hours off the clock and they wont even think about just letting you go home ealier or show up later since you worked over for them before. GOP has passed so many rules for Global Corporations that our constitutions heading now reads, " Profits before People !"

Thats right, worst employers in the world now, becoming like China and the other third world countries!!! It is truly shameful how the republicans/teaparty/big business/wallstreet/filthy wealthy and their greed, lack of morals, ethics, basic humanitarianism have damaged the reputation of U.S. businesses and this country, it is a true embarrassment to the people of this country, so anti-american to treat workers the way they do!!!!!

Slaves are not supposed to be satisfied it makes them lazy. All part of the republican revolution. As soon as they repeal the 13th amendment then unemployment will disappear!

I don't know if this is true, but I've heard that the HuffPo writers' #1 complaint is that they have to find inane clip art to create a slideshow -- pictures that adds nothing to the content. Please stop HuffPo editors.

No, a lot of my friends who work for banking and insurance are complaining about the work loads and being uncompensated.
It is time for work contracts and job descriptions that are followed or companies should be sued for misconduct.

This is exactly what happens when UNIONS are essentially outlawed....Germany has at least twice the percentage of union members that we do and they have their great pensions, great healthcare, great vacations....
03:27 AM on 09/08/2011
And that's why powerful voices in the country keep bad-mouthing unions. And people in this country believe what they're told even though all evidence point to a better quality of life and a more stable, productive, and happy workplace.

I can put up with most anything if the management is good. The primary reason people leave is because they can't stand who they for.

I'm really grateful for my husband's job. He got hired at his company in July 2009, and they have not changed the way they have treated him since he has hired on at all. He has received three raises and four promotions. We are doing great financially. It isn't all doom and gloom out there.

So what is left not to be unhappy about? I think people who are so dissatisfied should start their own businesses so they can be lazy and do nothing like so many people here seem to think business owners live. Imagine, you can be your own CEO and have all those perks and not have to do anything.

While some of the complaints seem legit, i have to say some of these so called problems, especially the number 1 problem are weak. To much stress, come on, when in history has any job that someone who provides for him/her self or a family not been stressful. Work has always been stressful. Society today just complains about it much more. My father worked 3 jobs to provide for me and never complained a bit. Toughen up a bit and be grateful to have work when so many do not

Stress from watching qualified colleagues be forced out, having to pick up their work and your own, unpaid overtime because you're in "professional class" and not protected in any way, and watching your back to make sure that if the job is outsourced you can land on your feet while making payments on an underwater mortgage for a house that required only 24% of income is more stress than Dad had. To say nothing of paying for college for the kids and uncompensated continuing education to stay employed. That's reality for many people I know.
