Read Shocking Self-Help Advice From 1740

One of Britain's first self-help books, written in 1740, to help women resist life's temptations has gone on display.

The rare book, which is entitled 'The Lady's Companion: or an Infallible Guide to the Fair Sex', includes advice on everything from cooking to resisting the advances of men.

It claims to be essential reading for "virgins, wives, or widows" and has recently surfaced in a private collection.
