Just as predicted, Eddie Murphy will be bringing his distinctive laugh and bright smile to The Kodak Theater this year.

The comedian will officially host the 84th Academy Awards. This is Murphy's first time hosting the esteemed awards show.

"I am enormously honored to join the great list of past Academy Award hosts from Hope and Carson to Crystal, Martin and Goldberg, among others," said Murphy. "I'm looking forward to working with Brett and Don on creating a show that is enjoyable for both the fans at home and for the audience at the Kodak Theatre as we all come together to celebrate and recognize the great film contributions and collaborations from the past year."

Eddie...an American icon. I'm an old doddering WASP, but I love him. Where there are Eddies, hope lives. Pun intended.

Why not Eddie Murphy? It is Showbiz; it's about money... He ought to get the gig, because his films are second only to those of Tom Hanks films in revenues. So in a town where it is all about the money, Eddie has earned the respect and the honour of the industry and is deserving of hosting the oscars. Too bad that most people cannot get past their embarrassing perceptions of what an oscar host ought to be; if Mr. Murphy were not capable of hosting, his films would not have done the impressive box office haul that they have... Congrats to EM; cant wait to see him hit it out of the park at the Kodak Theatre!

Are they trying to make up for the white out conditions of last years nominee list in major acting categories?

Are they trying to get black audiences to tune in to see more white actors win oscars...for an entire 4 hours?

No. Thanks.

I think the Academy missed a bet by not hiring the entire cast of "Jersey Shore" as co-hosts.

And yes, I am being sarcastic.

Oscar committee should go on Youtube and pick someone, or two or three people. THAT would be refreshing.

Why.... Guy was funny 20 years ago, was he the cheapest they could get.
Also, can't wait for all of his gay ad aids joke. What a poor choice for the Oscars.

I'm sure Eddy Murphy will be a great host unless he drops references to some of his terrible movies like Dave, The Adventures of Pluto Nash and The Golden Child. Awkward silence doesn't work well for award shows.

Well, this I'll have to see. Whetther it will good or not, well I'll just have to wait.

Let's hope that really bad joke writer isn't involved! (can't remember his name nor do I care to google it. Yeah, that's right: I'm LAZY!)

I think you might be referring to Bruce Vilanch -- which is unfortunate because his stuff is really funny when it's delivered right! (Case in point: Better Midler)

Eddie Murphy steamrolled from funny to unfunny faster than Roseann Bar. He's mean spirited and has gone way over the comedic edge in his diatribes against women, Whites and Gays. Won't be watching this year. He's actully pathetic.

No one cares whether you will watch or not. I believe Eddie started out in the business when he was a kid and probably made fun of everyone. Who cares...he has grown as a person and an actor. Get over yourself...dumb.

He's the Right Person to liven up such a long and boring show. I am such a Eddie Murphy Fan.
