9/11 Anniversary 2011: Over A Decade Of Al Qaeda Terror Attacks (Timeline)

Timeline: Over A Decade Of Al Qaeda Terror Attacks

Sunday marks the tenth anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center. In the immediate aftermath, Washington quickly came to suspect that Saudi Osama bin Laden was behind the attacks. "When I was told another plane hit the second tower, my mind believe it or not did focus on Osama bin Laden," then White House chief of staff Andrew Card recently said in a TV interview.

Al Qaeda, bin Laden's global militant organization, has been synonymous with terror across the world. Bombings in a Bali nightclub claimed the lives of 202, more than 130 people were killed in blasts in Madrid in 2004, and suicide attacks in London in 2005 claimed the lives of 52. In the past decade, al Qaeda has changed and developed. It is affiliated with dozens of splinter groups, and has branched out to Iraq, the Maghreb and the Arab Peninsula. After 9/11, the organization became the number one target of a worldwide war against terrorism; its leaders were hunted and its members detained.

In the timeline below, The Huffington Post looks back at al Qaeda's history and presents the largest terrorist attacks perpetrated by the organization.
