WASHINGTON (RNS) Americans consider religious freedom a cornerstone of society, but fall short in their tolerance of Muslims, according to a poll released Tuesday (Sept. 6) that probes Americans' attitudes toward immigrants and the nation's safety 10 years after 9/11.

The "What It Means to Be American" poll found that a small majority (53 percent) say the country is safer now than before the 9/11 attacks. Attitudes toward Muslims, however, are far less straightforward.

More than 8 in 10 Americans say that self-proclaimed Christians who commit violence in the name of Christianity are not really Christians. By contrast, less than half (48 percent) say that self-proclaimed Muslims who commit acts of violence in the name of Islam are not really
Muslims.

"Interestingly, we find that Americans basically have a double standard when it comes to evaluating religious violence," said Robert P. Jones of the Public Religion Research Institute, which produced the survey with the Brookings Institution.

On the same question, disparities arose among political and religious groups.

Republicans (55 percent) were more likely to call the perpetrator of a violent crime in the name of Islam a Muslim than were Democrats (40 percent). At 57 percent, white evangelicals were far more likely to consider the perpetrator a Muslim than were Catholics (39 percent) or black Protestants (36 percent).

In general, the survey of 2,450 adults paints Americans' attitudes toward Muslims as a complex picture of acceptance and wariness.

Nearly nine in 10 Americans agree that "America was founded on the idea of religious freedom for everyone, including religious groups that are unpopular." And by a 2-to-1 margin, Americans reject the idea that Muslims want to establish Islamic law, or Shariah, in the United States.

But they are divided as to whether Islam is at odds with American values, with 47 percent agreeing and 48 percent disagreeing.

The poll's authors likened this ambivalence about American Muslims to the evolution of attitudes toward Catholics, who were once widely suspected for their loyalty to the pope, and Mormons, once widely reviled for their religious practices.

Brookings scholar William A. Galston said Muslims are now testing the nation's tolerance, particularly as they try to build mosques.

"The siting of Muslim houses of worship has become the object of great controversy, which really goes right at the heart of religious free exercise," he said.

The survey also notes differing attitudes toward Muslims between generations, with more than 6 in 10 young Americans (ages 18 to 29) reporting comfort with several expressions of Muslim religious practice, compared to fewer than 4 in 10 senior citizens.

The report uncovered more ambivalence on immigration, and concluded that prospects for immigration reform face steep obstacles.

A slim majority (53 percent) takes a positive view of the influence of immigrants on American society; 42 percent said the growing number of newcomers threatens American values.

And while 51 percent of Americans said the nation should make a serious effort to deport all illegal immigrants, when asked a more nuanced question, a majority seemed to oppose such a policy.

Asked whether they favor an immigration plan that combines enforcement with deportation, or a plan that combines enforcement with a path to citizenship, 62 percent preferred to combine enforcement with a path to citizenship.

On race, nearly half of Americans (including 51 percent of whites) believe that discrimination against whites is as big a problem as discrimination against minority groups. About 3 in ten blacks and Hispanics agree.

The biggest differences in perceptions about discrimination emerged between those who most trust Fox News and those who most trust public television, with nearly seven in 10 Fox News fans saying that so-called reverse discrimination is as big a problem as traditional discrimination, compared to less than one in four public television viewers.

Among the poll's other findings:

  • Ninety-five percent of Americans believe all religious books should be treated with respect, no matter the religion.

  • Acceptance of Mormons continues to lag behind other minorities, with 67 percent expressing favorable views of Mormons, compared to 84 percent for Jews and 83 percent for Catholics.

  • 16 percent of Americans believe that people in Muslim countries have a favorable view of the United States.

The survey of 2,450 adults had a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.

I'd like all these Muslim appeasers to please prove me wrong and find me practicing "moderate" Muslims that will admit that there was an indigenous pre-Zionist Jewish population in Israel or even "Palestine" if you'd like to call it that (wrongly). That this pre-Zionist Jewish indigenous population was exterminated over the 14 centuries of Islamic Arab conquest and colonization of their land and that the vast majority of so-called "Palestinians" were 1920s era immigrants to the British Mandate who came to work in the economic boom created by the Zionists joining the 10,000 indigenous Jewish survivors of the 14th century Arab Muslim occupation.

Tolerance has to be a two-way street. At a local Independence day parade, there was as Islamic float handing out Korans, followed by a popular local bar handing out flyers to a pig-roast. I wonder if a float handing out BIbles and pig roast flyiers would be allowed in a similar parade in Saudi Arabia?
When female CNN reporters giving stories from the streets of Tehran are no longer required to have their heads covered, I will accept Islam as worthy of the protections of the 1st amendment.
The real issue is one of governance. Our Constitution and the Judeo-Christian religions can and do separate their religion from government in that governmental freedoms and rights trump relgious rights. The right to a trial by a jury of peers trumps "honor killings." Religions may dictacte what happens to our immortal souls, but our mortal shells are protected by the Constitution. That is not the case with Islam and Sharia which are inseparatable.

The intolerance that people condemn Islam today does not spring from rival vision of God but quite from other sources.

The West also has a problem. The fundamental weakness of both western civilization and Christianity is their inability to recognise that they share the planet not with inferiors but with EQUALS.

Unless the Western civilization intellectually and socially, politically and economically, and the Christian church theologically, can learn to treat other men with fundamental respect, these two in their turn will have failed to come to terms with the actualities of the 21st century.

The problems raised in this are, of course, as profound as anything touching on Islam. The reality is that Islam and the West share a common tradition.

From the time of the Prophet Muhammad, Muslims have recognised this, but the west cannot accept it.

Today, some Muslims are beginning to turn against the cultures of the People of the Book which have humiliated and despised them. A rejection to build a mosque near WIC site may help to turn the radicals against the West more. They have even begun to justify their hatred in the name of Islam which vehemently condemns hatred, pride and arrogance

The West should understand that a healthy and functioning Islam is crucial because it helps Muslim people to cultivate decent values and ideals which people in the west cherish.

Islam is not going to disappear or wither away. It would have been better if it had remained healthy and strong

Do the Muslims that feel humiliated and despised by the West also admit that Muslims were responsible for the mass extermination of the indigenous pre-Zionist Jewish population of Israel? Or that the so-called "Palestinians" are almost COMPLETELY the descendant of 1920s era immigrants to the British mandate who went there to work in the economic boom created by Zionists joining the surviving 10,000 native Jews of the genocide carried out upon them by 14 centuries of Muslim rule? Or do you defend the Muslim lie "Jews and Muslims lived peacefully together before Zionism? It seems to me that the Muslims want to highlight the crusade while ignoring their crusades that in India alone exterminated at least 90 million Hindus.

I think the wise thing for America to do at this point in time is to close our doors to all immigration from the Muslim world for a few decades. It's not politically correct but it's sane.

Why? Is it jealousy, bigotry, religious prejudice, hatred, politics or fear? What motivates you to suggest this?

One of the themes running through some holy books is that of "scapegoating." This is the concept that guilt and punishment can be transferred from those responsible for an evil act, to others who are innocent of that act.

it seems fundamentally unjust and evil according to every moral code.
By not holding perpretrators directly responsibility for their actions, innocent people become marginalized and denigrated.

For example:
When some Muslims think of Christianity in America, they think of Pastor Terry Jones of Dove World Outreach Center in Florida as a typical Christian.

He burned a copy of the Qur'an.

When some Christians think of Islam in the Middle East, they think of Bin Laden or Musab al-Zarqawi, leaders of Al-Qaeda, as typical Muslims.

They confuse the beliefs or practices of an individual or a small minority of believers for the entire religion.

As one example, in the minds of many Americans, responsibility for 9/11 terrorist attack has spread from 19 radical, violent, fundamentalist Muslims and their Al-Qaida handlers to all 1.6 billion followers of Islam.

When one refers to any religion or faith group/tradition/denomination within a religion, we are generally referring to more than the beliefs and teachings of its founder.

The culture in which the religion developed has generally had a major impact as well.

The VAST MAJORITY (not just Hamas) of Muslims REFUSE to admit that there was an indigenous pre-ZIonist Jewish population of Israel and REFUSE to admit there were genocides carried out upon them by their Muslim Arab occupying colonizers. Lets see so-called "Palestinians" teaching the 1660 destruction of Safed and Tiberias in their schools haha yea right. Islam: Carry out genocide and then deny it ever happened.

Could it be that some Muslims have become nearly as proficient as some Americans at causing the deaths of the relatively innocent and they know that if truth be told that they do not trust themselves so how can they trust anyone so similar ?

Just sayin'...We Do Not Confuse "Tolerance" with "Trust"; it is Unwise to Spit in the Wind. "Trust" Is a Thing Earned. Whose court is this ball in?

Iran just executed three men for homosexual activity. Honor killings are encouraged, women are treated like farm animals, stoning and whipping is common and in Gaza, children are born specifically to become a suicide bombers. While the world condems and vilifies Hitler for what he did to the Jews, no one seems to remember Islam has vowed to finish what he started or that they were his Middle Eastern buddies during WW2, and all done in the name of their religion.
What part of tolerence are they displaying? Why should anyone be tolerant when they are judge, jury and literal executioner to anyone who disagrees with them? There is more than "religion" and "tolerance" going on here. Tolerance is a two way street. If they can not give it, they can not expect it. Only a fool will believe in something standing in front of the mountain of contrary evidence.

Wow, what did you do? Flag every single response you disagreed with on this topic? What does that say about you? FYI: Perhaps you should read and listen to the reports from Gaza from the mothers who are happy their child will be a die a martyar for Allah - after all, if they do, the whole family gets special status in Islam paradise. Perhaps all the photos of children dressed in suicide bomber attitire should be ignored. Perhaps you are misinformed -- before you tell me I'm a liar, and call me a "hater" you need to know what you're talking about, after all, just because you haven't heard of it, doesn't mean it's not true AND who is the hater? Your statement suggests you are intolerant, uniformed and very quick to judge...

People living in glass houses! The society we live in isn’t exactly a model for others to follow. No more, if it ever was. This despite the fact that it has never had to live under occupation by a foreign power since it became a nation.

Others can and do present facts about America in a non flattering perspective. Domestic violence is common. Rapes happen once every few seconds. There have been several serial killers. 3% of the entire population is in the prison system. Education is shambling along. Corporate greed has nearly destroyed the economy. Infrastructure has been neglected. Roads are in disrepair and bridges are crumbling.

Should we be sending soldiers abroad and spending billions to spread “democracy” abroad when the political system back home is so polarized and deadlocked that it seems unable to discern the needs of the people.

The difference is that we call domestic violence a social ill, while ii is a male right in Muslim societies. We call rape an act of violence against women. Muslim societies call it an act of treachery against men.
02:50 AM on 09/08/2011
Yes, all those horrors happen in the USA, but they are not approved of by the Christian, Jewish etc religion.

Islam approves of "child brides" = pedophia, and polyamy, and authorizes a husband to beat his wife. Mulsim kids here in the USA are taugh Male Muslims are at the top, females are worth 1/2 of males, people of the book are less than women, but should be tolerated, and gays and atheists should be killed.

The reality is there are groups pushing for Shariah law here in the USA.. it is part and parcel of Islam.

Islam is a very fascist and abusive religion.

We should not "tolerate" evil done in the name of religion.

As a woman and an atheist why should I have any "tolerance for Islam" that not only states I must be killed, but that I am an inferior being who must be subservient to men, and who Mohammed dictated can be abused?
