Birth Month Could Determine Baby's Future Career, Health, Study Says

Think talent, personality and education indicate what career path a person takes? Think again. Your job could have been decided the day you were born.

A baby's birth month could be determine what career he or she is likely to take in the future, according to a recent study by the UK Office for National Statistics featured on the Journal of Family Health Care website.

Researchers used previous census data to statistically analyze the relationship between birthdays and 19 different careers, the Telegraph reports.

Babies born in December are likely to be dentists, while those born in February are likely to be artists, the study suggests.

The study also reveals a possible link between a birth month and length of life, The Sun points out.

Spring babies are likely to be musically inclined or involved in politics, but they are also more susceptible to asthma, autism or schizophrenia, The Daily Mail reports.

Researchers suggest that the results may be a correlation between how much sunlight a mother gets during her first months of pregnancy and vitamin D production, the UK International Business Times reports.

Good news for parents who'd like their children to grow up to be CEOs, though. Executives and real estate agents could be born during any month throughout the year, according to the Daily Mail.

An Oxford University neurologist suggests the results in relation to lifespan might not be that far out.

“It seems absurd the month in which you are born can affect life chances, but how long you live, how tall you are, how well you do at school, your body mass index as an adult, your morning-versus-evening preference and how likely you are to develop a range of diseases are all correlated to some extent with the time of year in which you emerge from the womb," said Russel Foster earlier in the year, according to the Daily Mail.

More crime occurs in the summer, too. Does that mean that warmth causes crime? This is correlation, not causation.

I was born in February and I do love my art. I use to draw and paint, and I took art classes from 1st to 11th grade. I have drawn everything from portaits to dresses and even though I'm not that good I've always enjoyed it. Even now, while I'm trying to be a pragmatic adult, I'm going to take medicine and I really want to be a cosmetic/reconstuctive surgeon because you can help people, be artistic and make mounds of money all at the same time.
I just have two obstacles to overcome: 1. My age..I'm 47 and I've just started on my bachelor's degree and 2. I hate to smooze and I know that I would have to suck up to a bunch of rich people.

I was born in December, and I am a computer programmer. We took a survey around our office, once, and most of the programmers were born in December. More than any other month. If you really want to predict the future of your children, watch what they play and how they play. There were no computers when I was growing up, but the closest thing we had were the space ships in the Sci Fi movies. I used to pretend that I was playing with a bunch of gadgets and gizmos, and I also like to play office. That was the closest thing I had. But, like most kids, I had a LOT of interests. As people age, they gradually focus on a couple of areas. This is kind of a shame, because we should always be interested and engaged in everything around us. But, we lose the wonder that children have. But, while they are children, nurture that sense of wonder and curiosity.

If 'where' and 'when' matters, shall we still pretend that this doesn't tend to validate a key tenet of astrology?

What a joke! Not one of their claims from this study matches me, my family, or the people I know! Talk about a waste of money. Wouldn't it make more sense to use this research money for something important, like which potato chip withstands dips without cracking apart?

Doesn't this fit into the same catagory as astrology......matching birthdates to personalities and professions? I was born at the end of February and am an artist. Of course not everyone fits into the formula, but many do. Sometimes it's just not as literal as all that....Just like another poster said, the scientist is a kind of artist. People generally think artist means visual, but there are many kinds of artists. I'm going to research this further, and see how it fits the rest of my family. The astrological charts have nailed the personalities of the rest of them, I bet this does too!

Yes it does fit, I was also born the end of February and would starve if I decided to be an artist. They would probably have better luck asking the 8 ball questions.

I don't care what my children grow up to do, as long as they are healthy, happy and not living off me.

What a load. Spring babies are more apt to have (among other things) autism? Hm, Well, both my DECEMBER babies have autism. Not spring anywhere I know of in December. Lame.

Yes, the operative phrase is "more apt." The article didn't say the EVERY baby that is born in Spring gets autism and that no other baby born in any other month never gets it. It is a vague, non-specific statistic. Whether it is true or not, that's another debate, but read more carefully next time.
05:16 PM on 09/09/2011
Maybe you ought to read more carefully next time when you respond to a mother who writes that both of her children have autism. Why would you think it important to tell her to read an insipid article more carefully rather than ask her to share some of her wisdom and strength w/you?
07:10 PM on 09/08/2011
Right! You can really guess a person's birth month by all of this! The word NONSENSE seems fitting.

Just as valid as: Monday's child is fair of face
Tuesday's child is full of grace... etc.

Statistical probability (cf Bayes) is at best that: Probability. Conclusions drawn inductively are never conclusive. My daughter was born in February: she is not an artist (in the strict sense).
Instead she became a Scientist.

There is something to be said for creativity. The scientist and the artist are looking for solutions to problems. I think they are both creative thinkers.

As a Parent? It's best you plan to have a Safety Nest Egg for your Kids..
Just set aside $1,000 when they are Born, invest it into Gold and leave it there for them, but don't tell them..until they are about to Need to Retire..
That's what our Parents did for us and we did for our Kids and they did for their kids.
Family Traditions..
And what if you could Borrow an extra $10,000 on your Home Mortgage, but Use that Money to fund your Retirement-ROTH IRA? If put into A Bal. Fund like VWELX? Past 30 yrs it be now worth over $320,000!

and probably worth more than you home is worth now>...
Got our kids to do that when they bought their Homes..
They put the $ into another Bal. Fund > PRPFX and now worth over $30,000 in just the past 10 yrs! in another 20 yrs when they retire? could be worth over $300,000!
Not too shabby.. and For those who Lost their Homes? They still would have that Other $10k they invested into their Roth IRA as Free $..to use to go buy another Home. For every $10k they borrowed back then, paid only a 3%, 15 yr Mortgage
It cost them only $300 yr to pay for the Interest on that $10k..

Alot of Wise People made out very well on this Housing/Free $ Mortge. Game..

The age old question "what do you want to be when you grow up?" is confusing to kids (of all ages) I think we all struggle to "be" something other than the most important thing - ourselves. To rephrase the question I would say "what career do you want to work at when you grow up?"
05:18 PM on 09/09/2011
What an important distinction you point out and what a sensible solution you propose. Faved!
