Jon Kyl Threatens To Quit Super Committee Over Defense Cuts

09/ 8/11 06:02 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON -- The No. 2 Republican in the Senate says he would quit the special deficit-reduction supercommittee if there is an effort to cut more from defense.

Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl made the remarks Thursday at a defense forum shortly after the first supercommittee meeting. Kyl said he is "off of the committee if we are going to talk about further defense cuts."

The debt-limit bill that Congress approved last month calls for $350 billion in military reductions over 10 years.

At the supercommittee meeting, Kyl had commented on a "sense of optimism" that the panel could succeed in cutting $1.5 trillion from the deficit.

The forum was sponsored by the American Enterprise Institute and the Heritage Foundation.

Pure propaganda. When the government massively reduced spending after WWII, the Post-War boom happened. Keynesianism is not economics. But it's the bi-partisan corporatist state propaganda of choice.

WHAT??? I though Republicans wanted to cut the deficit. Isn't that what the debt ceiling circus was about? Now this one says he'll quit if there is an attempt to cut too much? What is he whining about anyway? 350 billion from defense over 10 years is almost nothing.
As usual, Republicans have an odd double standard. The budget has to be cut, UNLESS its my favorite part of the budget. States Rights are supreme, the Federal government may not interfere, UNLESS you happen to be talking about abortion, or same sex marriage. Then we'll hold up the government unless it interferes. Prayer in schools, of course that's not within the States Rights. Medical marijuana, neither is that.
Hypocracy ... thy name is Republican.

I suggested he quit immediately. Pre-emptive strike!

There are a few people, who if I ever had the misfortune of meeting, I would deck without one word spoken. Kyl is such a person.

I am convinced that if you put a group of ordinary citizens in a room, democrats and republicans, with the assignment of finding solutions for our problems, they would be able to reach agreements after a reasonable amount of discussion, provided they were isolated from politics.
The first thing they would have to do would be to disregard what they have read or been fed from sources with a political bias. Juries are always asked to be impartial.
The majority of ordinary people share the same needs for a job, medical care, education, job security and some financial security for old age and other things of this nature everybody should be entitled to in a civilized society in return for our best effort to be productive.
My citizen committee would be required to set aside any prejudice and use only their brain. Whatever expertise they may not have should be provided by knowledgeable individuals and/or corporations with no ties to political parties.
I don’t imagine much help could be expected from the financial world but there must be a good number of industrialists who may probably remember how they made it to the top and would be willing to set more equitable standards for those who need a job to survive. They know that the humble worker is their major strength and the secret of their success.
I wonder if the 12 in the “super congress” panel are the best people for the job.

Kyl is a first class idiot, and a big part of the problem. He is anti American and should be tried as a war criminal.

WHAT is it with these rightie girlie men, who threaten to quit whenever they don't get their way? I watch my 3 year old grandson stomp his feet, and leave the room when he is not getting what he wants, and these guys are SO much like him. Can you just hear the Righties if that was a Dem demanding ahead of time what he is going to cut and what he is not??? Damn, when Is America going to wise up and vote all these guys out ???

Be fair now, little Jonny Kyl is only TWO! NO FAIR comparing him with your THREE year old! (Wouldn't it be great if the typical Congressperson had the emotional maturity of a three year old?).

Kyl thinks cuts should only come from the elderly and the sick.

Not true. He also favors cutting students, the unemployed, and homeless people.

Any 12 normal, working, or otherwise sensible people would do a better, more thorough, faster, more equitable job than the plainly unconstitutional "stupor-committee"! Too bad they'll never get the chance. You've probably noticed that we no longer have a democratic form of government. We have an oligarchy, corporate, military-industrial complex. And that is what little Jonny Kyl is so ardently opposed to reducing. Good radiance to bad Republicans indeed!
