Dexter Season 6 Promo

If this new promo for the upcoming season of "Dexter"--which premieres Sunday, Oct. 2 on Showtime--tells us anything, it's that season six is sure to feature a lot of new blood--and faith.

Actor Michael C. Hall describes one new character, Brother Sam (played by Mos, sans Def), as someone whom Dexter initially is pursuing as a potential victim but later turns into his ally after finding the saving graces of God and his newfound faith. Now that's one way to avoid Dexter's bad side--or cutting table.

Next, we have Professor Gellar (Edward James Olmos) and his young protege Travis (Colin Hanks). Travis does some pretty bad things in the name of God, under the twisted guidance of his creepy mentor. But if Travis truly believes that he's doing the right thing in the name of God, does that make him a bad guy?

Bringing a shining positive influence on Dexter's son Harrison is Jamie Batista (Aimee Garcia), who is the new nanny and Angel's sister. She kind of comes off as a modern-day flower child, spreading love and positivity everywhere she goes, but can anyone really be that optimistic? And if she can't handle blood very well, then we can't wait to see the mess that she gets herself into this season.

Mike Anderson (Billy Brown), meanwhile, is a new detective and Chicago native who is described as being intolerant of shenanigans--and judging on the way he treats Deb, possibly women. Deb has certainly got her hands full this season.

Can someone tell me why breaking bad is a hit? i have season one and two on dvd and i want to like the show but i just can't.

The acting, writing and direction are all top quality. All of the actors are simply amazing. Last season's episode entitled "The Fly" was one of the finest written shows I've ever seen on TV. You may have to like black humor, be able to laugh at very dark subject matter, to get into this show. So, if you like Dexter I'm not sure why you're having trouble with Breaking Bad.

One thing that occurs to me is that there are few (if any) genuinely likable characters on "Breaking Bad." Dexter, Deb, Angel, and Vince all seem to have a way of getting the audience (or is it just me?) to like them.

That said, BB deserves all the praise you've heaped upon it. The most recent episode, "Hermanos," detailing Gus's back story was spellbinding.

last season was ok not as good as trinity but it was enjoyable. trinity and the ice road trucker were the best. i was so hooked even got my husband on the bandwagon and my family watching. This "faith" season seems too predictable. I love edward james olmos in BSG i would hate for this to go bad for him. I am not 100% this story is going to work well.

I agree, I like all the seasons. One of the best tv shows on! I am partial to ice truck killer and trinity! I will give this faith season a fair chance! Anything is better than the Kardashian bs on reality tv.

ugh. this show peaked with Season 4. i knew it when i was watching it. "There's no way they can top this," I thought. And I was right. This season will be better than the Julia Stiles mistake, I mean, season, but only by default because that was the worst season ever. I don't know why they thought it necessary to get all preachy on us in Season 6. Oh wait, I know, now that even mainstream America is watching, they have to pander to the spiritual. Oh well...

Oh I loved last season. Loved Stiles, the whole story arch, everything. Since it was the highest rated season so far, I guess tastes differ huh?

I just finished the Julia Stiles season, and thought it was great.

Nothing will top the Trinity season, most likely, but so it goes...

My bet is that Debra Morgan will hook up with Mike Anderson and have sex with him. Any takers?

I wish I had the willpower to wait for the season to be over then watch it all back-to-back. The suspense kills me.

Love Dexter...can't wait for new season to start. I hope they're joking about the whole religion thing though. That would be a huge turn-off.
01:58 AM on 09/09/2011
I don't think they're joking. And it's not necessarily a bad thing.

The show--when I think big picture--strikes me as being a search for wholeness, an attempt to fill the empty spaces of Dexter's interior life. Dexter has, to a greater or lesser degree, undertaken that search in a variety of ways.

In season two, he owned up, sort of, to his addiction.

In season three, he tried to make a real friend.

In season four, he thought he could have a balance between a normal family life and his murderous hobby. At least initially, he thought that's what Trinity had, and he wanted it too.

In season five, he was a protector, partner, and confidant of Lumen, a relationship in which he had no secrets. Aside from Harry, that does not happen elsewhere in Dexter's life. And Harry was keeping his own secrets.

I suspect season six will find Dexter exploring the "apparently" sustaining power of religious faith. He'll see it work for others, again "apparently." I doubt he will find what he's looking for though, when all is said and done. But I hope it will be an interesting ride.

This season is NOT really about religon, it's more about faith. And faith is more of a belief, not necessarily religion. Like believing in having friends, loving donuts, having a job to provide things for one's self or others, etc. And it's not like Dexter hasn't on and off gone against Harry's code, and even "Harry" admits in season 5 that he was wrong about Dexter... I am sure the criminals are going to be the one's to use and present "faith" in manipulative way, perhaps extending the can of worms Jordan Chase opened up with group energy and primal fear.
The faith storyline is really designed to present Dexter with the following dilemma: “What does it mean to raise a child given the Dark Passenger I’m carrying around with me?” Not to mention, that the big bad this season is about a religious fanatic killer. So I hardly doubt that it will be a huge turn off in the way you think...

I love the religion theme - I think in today's crazy anti-science political atmosphere, the idea of having characters who 100% believe what they're doing is right because their God/religion dictates it is very prescient. Shoot a doctor who performs abortions? Kill him because your God says killing innocent people (fetuses) is wrong. Unless it's the right thing to do for the right reasons using the right passages from the right religious text.

I'm excited for this. 1 and 4 were my favorite seasons, 2 was good, 3 and 5 were weaker. But it's still way better for most of the schlock on tv anyways.

Loved season 1-4. I thought last year was very weak. I'm looking forward to a new season and hope it returns to it's original dark humour.
