Nike MAG: Nike Releases Air MAG Shoes From Back To The Future Part II (PHOTO, VIDEO)

First Posted: 09/08/11 03:18 PM ET Updated: 11/08/11 05:12 AM ET

UPDATE: Nike has officially announced that it will be releasing 1,500 pairs of the Nike MAG.

"The NIKE MAG is no longer the 'greatest shoe never made.' The mythical shoe that originally captured the imagination of audiences in Back to the Future II is being released – and they’re here to help create a future without Parkinson’s disease," Nike wrote in a press release. "The 2011 NIKE MAG shoe was designed to be a precise replica of the original from Back to the Future II. The aesthetic is an exact match, down to the contours of the upper, the glowing LED panel and the electroluminescent NIKE in the strap. The 2011 NIKE MAG illuminates with the pinch of the “ear” of the high top, glowing for five hours per charge."

The shoes will be auctioned off on eBay's Fashion Vault and proceeds will be donated to the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Visit NikeMedia.com for more details on the sale, which will begin September 8 at 8:30PM PST.

"Power laces. All right!"

The web has been buzzing over the last day with reports that Nike may finally be releasing the famed MAG shoes featured in 1989's "Back to the Future Part II."

YouTube user DocEmmetBrown88 (obviously) posted a video on Tuesday (available above) called "McFly's Closet," which features row upon row of shoes closely resembling those worn by Michael J. Fox's character, Marty McFly:

"If I didn't know any better, I'd say that looks like shelves and shelves of 2011 Nike MAG shoes," the YouTube description reads.

And last night, Nike invited Matt Halfhill at Nice Kicks to Los Angeles for "a big announcement" on Thursday. He's posted pictures of Back to the Future goodies, including metal-shield glasses and retro Pepsi, he received in his gift box.

Last October, Nice Kicks posted documents related to a patent application for Nike shoes with an automatic fastening system, battery pack and charging stand. And in June, a user posted a short video of what is described as a Back to the Future-themed commercial for Nike being filmed at a Los Angeles-area mall. So all the evidence says that this is pretty much happening.

For years, people have tried to create their own Air MAG sneakers, posting videos of their own versions of the kicks on YouTube. One person offers to convert any pair of shoes for $500.

Dear Michael Fox: Your only mistake in the endeavor was not insisting that the shoes be MADE IN THE USA, and not by child slave labor. But I still wish you all the best.

Blinky shoes? Little kids have that. Whatever, I want to know if they auto-cinch, like in the movie. Shoes with lights have mercury in them, which leak into landfills when you throw them away. Not impressed.

I bid $2000 but it wasn't nearly enough.

Can't blame me for trying.

GO Bidders. Looks like the "flux-caspaster" and "Mr. Fushin" will be heading up in price.

Way to stay on the cutting edge of 1989 culture, Nike.

Wasn't born when the movies came out, but I've seen I and II and loved them. Would buy the shoes if nike was more friendly to whoever makes the shoes, and not outsourced kids. Don't have money anyway. Power laces are cool. Make the hoverboard now, I love skateboarding, a hoverboard would be cooler though.

Never mind the shoes, I want the the full service gas station from the first film.

Hi Tememos,
Great response however, Unless they were servicing a "Tucker". I don't think the "Men with the Star" would have found the filler cap on the Delorean very easily. Take Care,

Weren't those shoes supposed to auto fit one size fits all? and What about the rest of the apparel? the auto fit, self dry, talking jacket and pants? I think there are yet a few features, and accessories missing from their futuristic exact replicas, that are not much more than toys without the missing features. back to the drawing board Nike, but "Nice Try!"

Whose horrible idea was it to inflict these ridicule magnets on the youth of today? The only people who remember these shoes are too old to wear them. The market for these shoes is nonexistant. Flop incoming.

Did you even read the article?

Yeah I read it. You think they wont mass produce a cheaper version after those 1500 pairs have been sold to rich celebrities?

Yeah Nike is a well known company that uses child slave labor and other bad labor practices http://www1.american.edu/ted/nike.htm Plus the shoes are ugly. No thanks.
