Rick Perry Subjects Ron Paul To A 'Rick Lazio Moment'

Perry And Paul

First Posted: 09/08/11 05:47 PM ET Updated: 11/08/11 05:12 AM ET

Most of the post-debate media chatter centered on the sparks that flew between top-tier candidates Mitt Romney and Rick Perry. That's to be expected, of course -- that's precisely the way the media framed the debate going in to last night. And for the most part, that's the story today, with the addition of some "Jon Huntsman tried to inject himself into the race" sidelines. Writing for The Plum Line, Jonathan Bernstein says that "the most notable thing about the Republican field" is the "absence of a middle tier -- candidates who would make perfectly plausible nominees, but just weren’t likely to win." Well, I'd disagree with that -- the "middle tier," for the moment, is Ron Paul.

And if this image is any indication, Rick Perry, at the very least, hasn't managed to put Paul in his rear view:

This picture of Perry getting in Paul's face was apparently snapped while the cameras were not rolling at the debate last night. The two men have some beef -- Paul's most recent ad, if you recall, called out Perry for being a "cheerleader" for Al Gore's presidential candidacy, and presented Paul as the true heir of the Reagan legacy. The Perry campaign had shot back at it prior to last night's debate (making Rick Perry, to the best of my recollection, the first presidential candidate to ever respond to a Ron Paul attack ad), and the battle was restaged for the cameras last night. For those who weren't watching, Perry brought up Paul's decision to quit the GOP over the policies of the Reagan administration, and Paul countered by saying that he's stayed true to the "message" of Reagan, if not the man himself.

This image of the same confrontation (which due to the vagaries of licensing I can link to but not reproduce here) is even more jarring -- and not just because it recalls the famous personal space invasion that failed New York Senate candidate Rick Lazio mounted against Hillary Clinton during one of their public debates. Here, Perry is not just in Paul's face, he's made physical contact. Perry is supposed to be all about the Texas swagger, but let's recall that Paul is a septuagenarian. And whatever one thinks of his positions, Paul's public demeanor is generally regarded as respectful and gentlemanly.

At any rate, the upside for the Paul campaign -- who no doubt see Perry as an establishment politician, offering warmed-over versions of the anti-federal government tropes that Paul's been enunciating for years -- is that they can see this as a sign that they've managed to rattle Perry's cage. Don't doubt for a minute that these pictures won't steel the resolve of Paul's core supporters, either. I wouldn't be surprised if the return fire sounds like a "money bomb."

Dr. Paul didn't back away. Invasion of personal space is not" presidential" when paired with finger pointing and fist clenching. I'm just saying.Time for a money bomb! RON Paul 2012.

I hope Paul wins the primary. While I disagree with him wholeheartedly, it would be nice to see some presidential debates between two people who are actually capable of speaking the language in full sentences and conveying complete thoughts.
10:57 AM on 09/13/2011
LOL!

Well, Huntsman can also speak full sentences, but that's a liability in the Republican primary!

As much as I'd like for this story to have legs, it's just bogus.
Every politician I've ever known was 'handsy' - they're accustomed to shaking hands, putting their hand on your shoulder, getting into your space and trying to kiss your baby.

There's nothing to this 'story' - it's just wishful thinking and more than slight exaggeration.
11:01 AM on 09/13/2011
That looks to you like Rick Perry is trying to kiss Ron Paul? That is a tough guy leaning on a frail old man.

Body language reading FAIL!

Which is why Paul didn't even remember the "incident" when asked about it later that night.
I suppose you know more about the event than the 'frail old man' who was supposedly 'leaned on'.

Perry the bully! Who could vote for someone who assaults another candidate? Only a bully grabs, pushes, points, gesticulates and hollers at someone. Usually when they are confronted by something that was said they don't like. This Perry guy is a nut on policy, a criminal in political favors and a bully to Ron Paul. Mr. Perry you have no shame, no integrity and no chance to beat Obama!

So Perry the thug physically picks on an old man in his own party. Guess that's what's ahead for the Tea Party "patriots." Thugs voting for thugs for president.

Uh, oh. Better watch your social security. You are so loyal a believer in Perry, while you are knowingly involved in a Ponzi scheme? That's criminal! I want you to give your social security check back so I can have a job. You are living on "entitlements" according to your party. So face it you are on the DOLE and therefore part of our big American problem according to the Republicans. Stop living off the government teat and stop taking what you don't deserve. There are a lot of us out here who want that money and should have it.

I was very angry when I first saw the story and pic .But yesterday on Hardball,Mathews showed a clip of Ron Paul making light of it and he said he doesn't even remember the incedent..that it looked pretty bad,but wasn't.soooo..it must not have been what it looked like.
That said..I still think the guy is a phony and no good..based on all the other info i hear,but..maybe that's because I'm partial to Paul.
12:25 PM on 09/10/2011
The subtitle to this could read, Perry: "What the hell, Ron, we're both Texans. Where's your loyalty? Why are you calling me out?!?!?" Paul: "Well, um, sorry Rick, I thought this was a debate, which I think means we might disagree on some things? Just sayin' . . . ."

I think Perry is angry because his fellow Texan knows him better than any of the others on Obama's unofficial re-election committee (AKA the Republican "presidential" candidates) and he'd like to squelch Ron Paul before any serious damage is done. Trouble is, Perry's own words are infinitely more damaging than Paul's could ever inflict. Looking forward, we can probably expect Perry to take Iowa and South Carolina, Romney to take New Hampshire and Nevada, and for Florida to be a bloodfest. After that, the "Ponzi scheme" we're most likely to see come crashing down is the lousy bill of goods Perry is trying to feed us as a vision for a better America.

I'm not a big Ron Paul supporter, but I admire and respect his honesty and sincerity, and I've never seen him engage in ad hominem attacks on others. Rick Perry's demeanor comes across as a school yard bully who will pummel the smart kids and the nerds who dare to challenge him. May his star fade fast.

Nicely said.

I wouldn't vote for either. But your assessment of Paul is on the money. Although I think he's way over the edge as much as any right-winger these days, at least he seems a civilized, honest, gentlemanly sort who prefers to use words and ideas over cartoon cowboy, popgun patriot macho nacho chest puffery and implications of physical threats if the threatener doesn't get his way.

But, although I'm not the biggest fan of the Dems, they're a damn sight better than the GOP has been since Nixon's days. Even as a kid in the late '60s, early '70s when TrickyDick was running amok in the White House with his Book of Dirty Tricks & Dirtier Deeds and the Suthuhn Strategery was king as a campaign tool, why, I made a vow that when I reached voting age if the GOP continued on in the trend they were already going I'd never vote GOP.

And since then the party has, for the last forty years, moved further and further to the far-right into the political Oort Cloud making the late Abe regret founding the party, I've never regretted making my vow and have been with each succeeding national election, been reaffirmed every time in the smartness of that vow.

Too bad, as I really admired the party's founder, Abe, dug TR and thought Ike was a civilized, decent, moderate person who was the last great Republican president this nation's had.

Both comments are outstanding! It is really a shame that when the Republicans claimed the word conservative.....that didn't live up to the definition. Throw out the dirty tricks (Nixon, Rove...) the GOP has shown it's true colors the last decade. From prosecuting Clinton, to a questionable election victory, to LYING about:
the toxic cloud at the WTC,
WMD's in Iraq,
the effects of man on climate change,
debt & deficits,
the legitimacy of President Obama,
end of life planning,
campaign funding,
de-regulation,
tax cuts,
to lying about CARING ABOUT MIDDLE CLASS AMERICA!

As a conservative by virtue of being raised by Depression era parents....I deeply resent the GOP claiming to be conservative. A true conservative believes in:
CONSERVING natural resources, not running them dry.
doesn't run up the national credit card by not paying for 2 wars and a politically motivated set of tax cuts and Medicare give away.
would abandoned fossil fuels decades ago, when we held hostage to foreign oil and came to realize how dangerous burning them is to the environment.
would have pushed for common sense and simple regulation of banking, financial services and mortgage industries.

So....you have the lies, exaggerations, and hypocrisy of the GOP; opposed to the complete disregard for conservative values. How can you trust anyone who claims the Republican mantle and does literally the opposite of what they say they believe in?

Ron Paul's smaller than Rick Perry. Bullies like that.

I imagine Paul, whose politics I think are nutty, but who I respect as a sincere person, probably did to Perry what a mongoose would do to a rattlesnake.

I so wish a mongoose could win in a rattlesnake battle (I'd be ordering a family of them), unfortunately they are too slow for the Viper family. But I think Paul, year for year, is faster and more reliable than Perry. Sadly, he's a RINO, a Libertarian.

Well, Perry did promise to "get rough" with Bernancke. It's not surprising he threatened it with Paul.
