Kauffman Foundation: How Entrepreneurs Create Jobs (VIDEO)

With the latest Department of Labor statistics revealing no net increase in jobs for the first time in 11 months, the Kauffman Foundation has released two videos to increase public awareness of what entrepreneurs can do for the economy and the job market.

In the first video, Kauffman Foundation president and CEO Carl Schramm narrates animated white board drawings that highlight the contributions entrepreneurs make to the economy, including how they birth innovations, create jobs and produce all new net wealth in society.

The second video, featuring Schramm and Robert Litan, vice president for research and policy, outlines the foundation's Startup Act, which proposes several policies that will allow more businesses to start and grow.

The video is long but raises some interesting points. One in particular includes the formation of new startups has remained steady despite changes that have occurred in the business cycle. However the number of jobs these firms are creating on an annual basis is declining. One explanation for this is new firms may not have the capital to hire the human resources they require and have to be creative in building their business. Therefore entrepreneurs end up assuming multiple roles within the company. Another point addresses importing immigrants and providing temporary visas to help them start new firms. However, the US should focus more on providing assistance to new startups within the US to help them become sustainable businesses.

How can entrepreneurs save the US Economy if none of their products are for sale in US retail stores? The answer, I believe, is that they can’t. Until consumer hard goods made in the US are available for purchase in US retail stores, there will be no economic recovery in the US, small businesses or no small businesses. If the US doesn’t produce hard goods, we will continue on the road to becoming a country of shop keepers, creating jobs by selling offshore made products.
