As the nation and the world mark the ten year anniversary of the September 11 attacks, there are a number of memorial events taking place throughout New York City to mark the solemn anniversary.
Time Out has a comprehensive list, including:
• An FDNY Memorial Ceremony at the New York City Fire Museum.
• A screening of Man On Wire about Philippe Petit’s 45-minute walk between the Twin Towers in 1974 at the Museum of the Moving Image
• The 9/11 World Trade Center Memorial Floating Lanterns Ceremony. In the Japanese tradition, New Yorkers are invited to decorate a lantern with the name of a loved one and a message before each one is set afloat on the Hudson River on the South side of Pier 40.
• 9/11 Ten Years Later. In the eight months after 9/11, photographer Joel Meyerowitz got access to the area surrounding Ground Zero. He took more than 8,000 photographs of "courage, compassion and solidarity" in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy. Meyerowitz will share his memories and show his images at the 92nd Street Y.
• The 10th Anniversary Memorial Political Cabaret. A burlesque performance with proceeds benefiting the Uniformed Firefighters Association of New York’s Widow’s and Children’s Fund. It's at the Highline Ballroom.
Fodor's has a list of events that features:
• St. Patrick's Cathedral 9/11 Memorial Concert. A free concert featuring the Young Peoples Chorus of New York, the New York Choral Society and Cathedral Choir of St. Patrick.
• The Metropolitan Museum of Art will display the 9/11 Peace Story Quilt.
Metro New York highlights various activities including:
• In recognition of the 10th anniversary, the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx is offering a free “All-Garden Pass” admission from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Sunday.
• Legendary folk performer Pete Seeger will host a concert at NYU with various musical acts.
Gothamist points out some interesting and off-the-beaten path opportunities like:
• The free "Music After" concert at the Joyce Soho with 15 hours of music by composers who lived or were housed downtown on 9/11, including Philip Glass.
• Symphony Space will host several prominent New Yorkers reading selections by famous poets. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, tennis great John McEnroe, Rev. Al Sharpton, and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor will all read.
• At various outdoor locations in DUMBO, ten artists will present interactive works as part of "Rethinking Memorial: Ten Interactive Sites for Remembering 9/11."
