9/11 Anniversary Terror Threat: At Least 2 Suspects In Possible Attack May Be U.S. Citizens, Say Officials

911 Anniversary Terror Threat

MATT APUZZO   09/10/11 08:08 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON — U.S. intelligence agencies have found no evidence that al-Qaida has sneaked any terrorists into the country for a strike coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, senior officials said Saturday.

But authorities kept a high alert as investigators looked for proof of a plot possibly timed to disrupt events planned Sunday in Washington or New York.

Since late Wednesday, counterterrorism officials have chased a tip that al-Qaida may have sent three men to the U.S. on a mission to detonate a car bomb in either city. At least two of those men could be U.S. citizens, according to the tip.

No intelligence supported that tip as of Saturday, and officials continued to question the validity of the initial information.

While such tips are common among intelligence agencies, this one received more attention, and government officials chose to speak publicly about it, because of the connection to the anniversary of the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history.

Al-Qaida long has hoped to strike again on the anniversary.

At the FBI field office in Washington, assistant director James McJunkin described the tip and the response as routine. The U.S. already had bolstered security nationwide before the upcoming anniversary and anticipated an increase in tips.

"We expect we're going to get an increase in threats and investigative activity around high-profile dates and events," he said. "This is a routine response for us. It's routine because it's muscle memory."

Intelligence analysts have looked at travel patterns and behaviors of people who recently entered the country. While they have singled out a few people for additional scrutiny, none has shown any involvement in a plot, according to the senior U.S. officials, who insisted on anonymity to discuss the investigation.

President Barack Obama met with his national security team Saturday, but the White House released no new information about possible threats. A statement said that counterterrorism efforts were working well and would not ease in the weeks and months ahead.

The tip that touched off the most recent investigation came from a CIA informant who has proved reliable in the past, according to U.S. officials. They said the informant approached intelligence officials overseas to say that the men were ordered by new al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahri to mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 by doing harm on U.S. soil.

He took over as the group's leader after the U.S. killed Osama bin Laden during a raid in May at his compound in Pakistan.

The informant said the would-be attackers were of Arab descent and might speak Arabic as well as English. Counterterrorism officials were looking for certain names associated with the threat, but it was unclear whether the names were real or fake.

Some intelligence officials have raised doubts about the threat, given the short turnaround time. Someone who recently arrived in the United States would have just days to plan and obtain materials for a car bomb attack, a difficult feat even with a long lead time.

But they did not dismiss the threat. Extra security was put in place to protect the people in the two cities that took the brunt of the jetliner attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Both cities were clearly on edge. Police in New York were investigating two vans stolen from a World Trade Center site contractor and another from a New Jersey storage facility. Their counterparts in Washington were on the lookout for a pair of U-Haul vans reported missing from nearby Prince George's County, Maryland, though U-Haul said one was later found. The company had no details

Police connected none of the threats to a terror plot, but said they were taking extra precautions because of the recent threat.

Law enforcement agencies around the country had increased security at airports, nuclear plants, train stations and elsewhere in the weeks leading to Sept. 11. The latest threat made those measures more urgent.

U.S. embassies and consulates also stepped up safeguards in preparation for the anniversary.

While authorities urged people to keep a watchful eye for suspicious activity as usual, they said there was no reason the latest tip should change anyone's weekend.

"Whatever you have plans for, it's a beautiful day. It's going to be a beautiful weekend," McJunkin said. "It's college football Saturday. Tomorrow is the start of the NFL season. So we expect the public is going to be out enjoying what it means to be an American."

I generally have a favorable opinion of humanity, in all its variations over the globe, but my favor and faith in humanity always gets rattled when I read the comment sections to these articles. I probably shouldn't.

It seems that if you want to assemble a right-wing freak show, all you have to do is publish an article about 9/11 or terrorism. They come out of the woodwork like termites. In the last 30 minutes, I've read some of the weirdest, most off-the-wall stuff I have ever seen, except in the garage-produced papers put out by the "black helicopter people". (Yes, I like to know what the lunatics are reading).

Once upon a time, the conservative right was about fiscal responsibility, political morality and reason, and a close-to-the-vest approach to global relations. That model is as dead as Barry Goldwater. Now, we have teabaggers, global conspiracy theorists, "truthers" (what irony), "birthers", and barfers-up of every foul notion one could have about America or American leaders. People who hate this nation, hate its government, and hate the increasing non-white American population.

I can only hope that, in 2012, we discover that the mindless and hateful people on the right are a loud and obnoxious minority, and that for most of the population, reason, decency and intelligence prevails. If America falls into the hands of the freak show, we are done as a free republic.

Well considering the fact that we know of some cells that are in our country plus we also know of some that we don't know who they are or where exactly in the country their residing as of right now I'd say the chances of something happening here is ineveitable.I also have to agree with them and go along with the poular "lone wolf"theory. That waould be the best and most effective way of doing something bad to us

"U.S. intelligence agencies have found no evidence that al-Qaida has sneaked any terrorists into the country for a strike..."

As the reknown scientists and atheist Carl Sagan was known to comment about the existence of God; "Absence of evidence is not evidence of absense."

As for ten years of not having another successful terrorist attact on our shores, I think that was all Bush's fault too.
01:11 AM on 09/13/2011
I would give some credit to both Bush and Obama for keeping a lid on our security, but the lion's share of the credit goes to our intelligence agencies and military. The hands-on guys who labor at their jobs through one administration after another, and ultimately deliver the heavy punches.

So, does anyone else think we will never hear the names of these two 'suspects' primarily because they don't exist?
03:29 PM on 09/12/2011
You won't hear about them because they're probably Mohammed and Hussein, and that would offend Muslims, because they hate it when the truth comes out.
01:13 AM on 09/13/2011
Hmmm. What kind of a "they" are you? Someone I can stereotype, based upon the lowest common denominator of your race/religion/political bent/family?

I imagine you think you're a christian. . .

You only hear what you want to hear, and see what you want to see.

If I copied and pasted the condemnations of terrorism here for you to see with your own eyes, from all over the Muslim world, including big bad old H.amas and H.ezboAllah....you'd still probably say "Those dirty M.uslims never condemn terrorism!"

I feel very sorry for you.

How does Obama get away with saying it's been a decade without a successful attack?

What about Fort Hood? An obvious hater of his country continued to be promoted to high ranks of the military, because of top-down PC directives from the top to look the other way because he was a Muslim (and a member of Anwar al-Awlaki's Virginia mosque). He massacred our military on our own soil. So it has not been a decade without a successful attack!

Meanwhile, five year old children get frisked before getting on airplanes, and grannies in wheelchairs have to give up their Depends, all of us giving up freedoms to be "safe."

If the Obama administration was truly doing its job, it would be going after people who were obvious threats, not grannies and innocent children.

Because he was ONE person. You know, the ones who, if they are white and angry at the Gov't, are called "a lone wolf." Nevermind that some of the angry white men are avid listeners to hate radio. I guess terrorism is only done by brown people.
03:35 PM on 09/12/2011
I listen to a lot of talk radio and not once have I ever heard any one call or violence (unlike Teamster union bosses.)
But 80% of mosques in the US openly promote jihad, as commanded by their leader Mohammed.
Fort Hood was an out tight terrorist attack by a Muslim jihadist acting in the name of true Islam, but that's not what the media are reporting.
That he shouted "Allahu Akbar" and carried a "Soldier of Allah" business card ? Nothing, right?
Damn those tea parties with their flags and signs and songs, such a threatening group, lol....

Why does the Obama Administration have to leak intelligence information to the press in order to "prove" it is on top of anti-terrorism security?

Fundamentally, Obama's regime has no credibility in this area. For the first two years of his administration, the word "terrorism" was not even allowed to be used. The Christmas Day bomber was not put on a no-fly list, even though the threat was obvious, and Obama didn't even bother to leave the golf course to deal with it. The Fort Hood massacre happened because the military had been so intimidated by top-down PC directives they ignored the obvious; and Obama did not even announce the tragedy to the nation until he was done giving "shout-outs" at a PR-fest for Native Americans. Obama's administration fought to bring the 9/11 mastermind KLM to be tried in NYC and stood up for those who wanted to build a mosque at Ground Zero, never even visiting the site until it was politically expedient to take a victory lap after finding bin Laden, which would not have happened if his close-Gitmo policies had been implemented. Terrorism is, like everything for Obama, a PR tool when he needs it.

Now Obama is leaking every little thing he does to prevent terrorism to the press, for his own political credibility. But sensible people know that if you're leaking intelligence, you're not protecting us. So his bid for credibility is actually working against him.

No evidence that Al Qaeuda sneaked terrorists in to this country???!!
Are these people listening to their own hearings (Congress and testimony) or reading their own intelligence reports? I DID.
The fact is, they sneak them into our country every day. They are already here in many cases. They come across the Southern Borders from Yehmen, and all other countries as well, according to their own intelligence reports and sworn testimony. Almost 20 thousand in less than six months, last year alone! How they know this, I have not a clue but that was their own report & sworn testimony. ( Border Senior Officials on c-span last fall) I listened to these Investigative hearings every day for weeks. Perez, DHS, Senior Security Advisors, Border Officials, ICE and Immigration and others.
Have you all in Washington lost your minds? Perhaps that is why you entertained a Terrorist at a Pentagon Dinner or Luncheon while he was being listed as a terrorist by YOU, and YOU invited him while he was listed as a major number one leader and terrorist? Being looked for? By us!
I am serioussly doubting these appointed people and their capabilities. Nepalatano meeting secretly with known & wanted terrorists in her office after hours last year? For what she claimed was "An exchange of Information & Ideas. People, I am not stupid and you are NOT telling the truth.

Flying, taking a train or even driving an automobile is a PRIVILEGE, not a RIGHT. Just as are RIGHTS, PRIVILEGES have an even GREATER degree of RESPONSIBILITY to be used and respected.
I hope all you people who think your "rights" have been violated--the memorial ceremonies were just on TV. You could have been one of them by ranting and raving about how your "rights" were violated when they stopped you at an airport TSA checkpoint.
Just because we have "freedom of speech", it doesn't mean we yell FIRE in a crowded theatre if there isn't one.
We have three rights: LIFE, LIBERTY and the PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS, but-- that implies that we don't abrogate another person rights to the same. If one's PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS is to take away another's LIFE, then something is drastically wrong. One doesn't have that LIBERTY.
For every RIGHT we have fought for in this country comes an equal RESPONSIBILITY.
A PRIVILEGE has an even GREATER RESPONSIBILITY.
Please, get this all through your thick &$()*% skulls you "bleeding heart libertarians!!

You obviously have a very convoluted idea of the definition "LIBERTY". If you can't define it, you can't defend it. Bless those that DO defend liberty, along with those that are too ignorant to understand it.

THAT, among OTHER items, WERE reported to officials. Is it any wonder that many believe we not only didn't even attempt to stop 9/11........that some in our gvmnt were COMPLICIT?
11:43 PM on 09/11/2011
Complicit = Actor James Woods as a passenger on an aircraft - reported the"suspicious" behavior of men - appearing of Arab descent - on a flight - the WEEK prior to the Radical Muslim Terrorist attacks on 9-11.

Woods was on the flight - that became known as a "trial run" - for some of the hi-jackers.

Get a hold of yourself, Waterisland, Homeland Security is the boondoogle. Too many people and agencies.
02:29 PM on 09/11/2011
Any American citizen wanting to commit a terrorist act against people in their own country should be dealt with by having to face the worst possible punishment. How dare they enjoy the freedoms of this country and what many many men and women did to allow us to have the freedom we have. How dare they think about such a sick thing. If you are not happy being in America, please leave. Go somewhere and blow up things in the desert. You are a sick individual if you have those kind of motives and you should not live among innocent people who do not deserve to be hurt because of your perverted sick idealism.

Allahu Akbar! (not)

Geez, I'd start by gathering up all of the lobotomized teabaggers, and putting them to useful work repairing America's infrastructure. Then you bozos can turn from "whining" to "winning". Do something for your country, for change. Close your mouth and try to accomplish something positive.

they don't have to sneak them into the country...all they have to do is walk across the border

Does this mean the government will now start profiling american citizens and arresting them and holding them without bail and torturing them. Sounds more like an agenda for tyranny than anything else and you fools who have been supporting profiling might just find yourselves on the recieving end which in my opinion you deserve. Let tyranny reign fools let it reign !!!

Alot of posters are commenting about terrorists coming through our borders. Well we do have terrorists in the form of Americans here too.. I remember the Oklahoma bombings. Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols are Amercians, who killed 168 innocent people, 19 of which were children. So not all terrorists are trying to sneak in, some are born and raised here in the States too!

So I guess we should just not concern ourselves who comes into our country since there may people already in the country that may be terroroists. I seriously dont know how you guys function on a daily basis with such a lack of logic.
11:56 PM on 09/11/2011
@ mebemmee06:

Timothy McVeigh was the front man for a Radical Muslim terrorist cell - that he supported with his skills as a bank robber - and provided an in and out escape route to the USA - through Washington State.

There was a lawsuit filed by a law professor - over the death of his brother - that occurred while in custody - who witnessed McVeigh's interaction w the terrorist cell - and was to testify to McVeigh's criminal activities.
